I'm not sure how to go out repairing the rear shock on my 2006 Rage. While greasing the sled I noticed the cable that attaches to the shock used to control stiffness was broken. I also noticed that the skid doesn't have much rebound and stays mostly compressed when I sit on the sled.
So my question is do I just buy a brand new shock or is there a cheaper alternative?
Sorry I don't know much about shocks so thanks for the help.

The monoshock is rebuildable. The rider adjust cable that you broke will need to be replaced. Pioneer Performance near Buffalo can help you with both issues as they specialise in these things. They are on the Preferred Vendor area of this site, check them out.

Thrasher thanks for the reply. Any idea what the cost difference is between just replacing the shock vs rebuilding it? Being it is the middle of the season if the price difference is minimal I think I would just buy a new one and slap it in.

Price difference won't be minimal. A rebuild will be up around $100 if there is nothing seriously wrong with it and the cable will need to be replaced regardless. Pioneer has a fast turn around. I drop my shocks off and have them back within a day or two.

Ok rebuild it is. Does the skid have to come out or can I just unbolt the shock and slide it out?

I like to remove the skid to check it over but I have pulled shocks without removing it.

If its just a matter of a broken cable they are pretty easy to change.
Unscrew the old one and put in a new one.
The ice rips them out all the time.
I kinda set mine where I wanted it and then never worried about a broken cable anymore.
As far as no rebound I have no expertise but a rebuild sounds like the way to go

these sleds get ridden hard every year, id pull the skid out and look it over, grease it, might need to replace some bushings, check for cracks, if you have an easy way of lifting the rear end even better

I've replaced my shock and cable without pulling the skid. But it is a better idea to take the whole thing out and inspect all components if you have the time and motivation. Rebuilds are $50 through Pioneer I believe. A revalve (recommended) is only $10 more. But if anything else is bad on the shock it will be a lot more. Mine needed a new shaft, ice scraper, and upper eye bearing last time.

I've got a low mileage complete shock with around 1600 miles on it from an 06 vector for $175. Will throw in a cable at no charge. If the down time of sending out for rebuild is too long just wanted to give you another option. Send me a PM if interested in going this route.

That is a great price for sure. I paid almost that much for the refinished shaft that mine needed.
