:moon: Hello, just bought a 03 RX 1 mountain and really like this site. The info on here is really helpful. I was just wondering what mods make the most sense, I have never owned a mountain sled but love to ride off trail. I have my first trip planned out west to WY in Feb.. I live in MN and the riding style is definetly different. Weight seems to be a big issue with these, do they perform well stock? I sold my firecat to get this one because, Well I dont really know yet. After reading some articles, gearing and clutching almost seem to be a must to get these dialed in. 14.5 rollers and I was thinking 19/40 gears to start. maybe K&N air filters? I have never ridden this thing so I guess I dont know what to expect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome

I too have an 03 RX Mtn and live in MN. Here are things you definitely need to do..

New Skis, stock ones are very poor. I have SLP power pros on mine. Slydog powder hounds, and Simmons are also good choices.

MPI Transfer Enhancement Kit for the rear suspension. Gets your transfer better to get it up on the snow.

Clutching from the 05 RX MTN for elevation riding. 8bu weights and 14.5mm rollers.

Extrovert Drivers. Allow you to run track looser and eliminate track ratchet.

Another mod that greatly improves the sled is a seat from an Apex Mountain or go with a boss or Mountain Mod.

These mods will give you a good start. Then you can move into losing weight, ECP, different tracks, etc..

Where in MN are you located? Good luck with your mods and feel free to PM if you have questions or need help.

You have to figure out what you want to set it up for! If you want a mountain machine, start with whats below. Do searches on here for these subjects in this mountain forum and get ready to learn! This is a great group of guys!

I say:

* Apex mountain skis
* change the rear skid to an M7 - $350 (25+ lbs.
w/ new rear mounts)
* Clutching and gearing
* single exhaust mod - $70 (18+ lbs.)
* battery relocate - $75 (12+ lbs.)
* yank tool kit - $0 (3lbs.)
* rider forward - $3 (0lbs.) but MUCH better
* remove light pod $0 (12+ lbs.)

*Minus 70+ pounds for under $500*

These things are submarines! Don't worry about the engine, just take-off weight! Trust me!

Beyond this you can loose weight by:

* going to a 3" pitch ported track (12 lbs)
* new tunnel extension (5 lbs)
* Boss seat (7 lbs)
* Front A-arms (7 lbs)

It can go on and on! Have fun!

I live in Brainerd, I Already put on powder pros. How about the front? I read somewhere that widening it is almost a must

If the sled started life as a mountain then leave the front end alone. Too wide and you have more trouble pulling it over. Yard out all the boggie wheels and get a set of scratchers. That's also good for about 6lb weight loss even if you get the cat skid do this.The first mod I would do after ripping off all the free stuff is the rider forward. Get a tunnel extension long enough for a 162 and replace those drop brackets. A friend of mine has a set of aluminum MPI drop brackets he will be selling. The two steel drop brackets weigh 8 lbs and the alu's are like 3. Do the mods in stages and it's not too bad, but do the mods or you'll end up hating the sled.

I took my warrior, which of course is shorter than yours, out to WY last year and the first day I was stuck more that I rode I think. It will take some getting used to and with more track you should be OK. I opted to get a hold over Summit to ride out there this year, much easier to throw around.

I ride in the UP of Michigan with my 05 RX1 Mtn and you need to really think about what you want to do with the sled. If you stay on the trail you should consider a wider front end, but this will require new shocks since the stock mtn ones are too short. Second you definetly will have to re clutch if you are on the trails, you will quickly run out of gear on the trails. And finally the 2" paddle will self distruct if you spend an extended amount of time on the trails. I trimmed the lugs to 1.5" and it only lasted about 2500m.

Again I stress you need to think about where and how you are going to ride. If you are going to ride the trails more than 50% of the time let me know I can help since this is what I do and off trail about 50% of the time.

These are great sleds they just need a little bit of help to get them where you want them. Cheap mods to get it more comfortable, raise the bars and restuff the seat, these two will cost you less than $100, combined, and will maike the sled much more comfortable and rideable.

Best of luck,
Tom
