Thanks for the input guys. I was looking for an alternative to the more complicated roll-over valve option and it appears that the separator MAY accomplish the same thing, providing that it is not frozen or plugged. True? If true, then does its' height relative to the oil tank matter ? In other words, could I install it where shown in the photo?

Looks like the position in the photo might be a bit low.
You need to mount the air/oil box at least higher then the oil level in the tank. The reason is so that gravity can return any"spilled" oil that's in the box back to oil tank or mag cover depending on how you route that return line. I would highly recommend having that return line back to the mag cover like MPI has on there bypass kit it works very well. I see other turbo suppliers have followed MPI's idea on the routing also. On our last ride of the year one of our sleds(blue/white) was on its side for a good 5-10 minutes (video coming soon ) before help arrived to help upright the sled and with the bypass kit no oil was lost. Before we installed the bypass kit you could count on loosing oil in that scenario. Works great when the sleds completely on its side, but this wont help if the sled is upside down for a period of time, you need a roll over valve for that one. I hope that helps.
I would not use that box. You have two tested alternatives in the Rollover Valve or the MPI reroute. What you are doing is a experiment. Could go very bad at least opportune time. That said yes box needs to be higher. Good luck and let us know how it works.

Just to clarify, but MPI still uses that box, their bypass kit is in addition and just changing the routing of the drain line.
We had this oil problem on a non-turbo Viper (All stock) last season. We'll see if it does the same thing this season.
We have had ours (no turbo no rollover valve) on the side many times including on the right side at least 90 degrees for at least 10-15 minutes. It never has pissed out oil. I even looked around thinking it might as some have suggested over the years. Nope...nothing. Not that they can't.

On a Viper. OP has a Nytro. That said using both might be hot ticket. Just to many unknowns and I sure don't want to give advice that costs a engine or ruined day.

Mine rolled over twice last year. Once for just a minute and was 90 degrees. The second went completely upside down and it took a good 45 seconds for me to find the kill switch. Neither time did I have a drop of oil loss. Now the machine was new and probably didn't have the water problem yet. I will be getting the MPI turbo, so hopefully I'll never have to worry about this.

New MPI kit comes with return reroute pieces in it, so no worries

Again, all good info guys. Thanks. Yes it may be an experiment but I have ridden the last 3 seasons with no ROV or tether and have been on one side or the other numerous times and have rolled over to get unstuck as well. I know - not great 4-stroke behaviour. :-0 That said I have lost lots of oil but always carry extra. The idea of using the oil separator was recommended as a reasonable alternative. I finished the install today and placed it in the cavity behind the headlight. I feel confident that it will work well.

Just Happened to mine again. Happened to the original owner. I traded him, and now it just happened to me...Took the separator off, and replaced with a new one, and it's good to go now. Happened twice in less than 2k miles.
Wonder if making a metal one, and not having a heat shield from the muffler would melt off the moisture that gets accumulated in that separator.
I leave it in a cold garage...I'm guessing thawing it out every once and a while would prevent this also.

I'm hearing a clunking noise when I rock my sled from side to side. It's coming from the oil separator area. I'm assuming its the ball inside. Is this common or do I have a issue??

Just had mine freeze up this past week and puke oil everywhere. Less than 2000 miles on sled and it is always kept in the garage. Was down at the ice shack for the afternoon and i guess that is when it froze. Quick turn around by the dealer, they put new seperator on off sled in showroom and had me back out in a day. This should not even be a concern whatsoever on a $15,000 sled. I bought a fourstroke so i didnt have to worry about needing oil ! Just waiting for this to happen again...

Does anyone know where I might find a copy of this diagram that I can read? It's the diagram showing the insides of the oil separator.Hey gents. My Nytro often ends up on its' back every season, for a variety of reasons. The boys here at Yukon Yamaha suggest that I install the oil separator on my Nytro to reduce the annoyance of topping up oil on the trail - and having to clean up a mess later. So I am wondering :
a) who else would recommend this?
b) if not then why not?
c) if so, would the position beside the tank as shown cause any issues? PS I have just placed the separator in place and not completed the installation
Thanks
