One piece aluminum oil tank

You can convince yourself all you want, but it's an absolute shitty design. Excuse my language, but just because a few don't leak, doesn't mean it's still not a SHITTY design!
Would YOU design this? Cuz if you did, i'd not only lose respect for you as an engineer, but i'd also lose respect for you as a person.
I have yet to meet ONE person that i've shown this to that doesn't think it is THE most asinine design in the world.
My DOO bud laughed & said he would NEVER buy a Cat chassis because of these types of issues.
My Polaris bud, who has a leaky chain case, says at least his is fixable with a new gasket.

PLEASE! PLEASE!
PLEASE do not defend this engineering disaster.

BTW: The Cat dealer down the street has repaired well over 100 leaky cats. He's only been in business for 2 years.
Steve remember almost every piece of this ProCross chassis was designed for a 2 stroke Cat motor. When oil tank is used as designed it is actually a very nice design and if it leaks on the 2st you would never know since it would be blamed on all the oil spilled filling it!

Actually the first time anybody sees a leak they assume & hope it's just an over-fill or spill. Human nature & wishful thinking.
So yours does weep? "Weeping" oil ruin my trips because all i can think of is an empty oil can & my motor going KABOOM!

OK, Mr Cannon, i'll admit this oil tank/cover is not the end of the world & maybe it gets blown out of proportion, if you admit it could have been engineered let's say.....a tad better.
Deal?

Well I sure hope my 2015 Viper with YES IS COVERED. The sled was dry for two years now has a recurring puddle. Arrrg
Well test of Dealor and YES COMING UP
Ya my old truck never leaked oil until

If you seal it with the proper RTV when you have it off to clean the inside it will never leak. I have been on these turbos a long time and this is really not an issue when you do proper maintenance.

We are a picky verbal group, who likes to remember ‘NO’ issues with prior YAMAHA sleds but then remember, oh yea...... I used to do that ‘ maintainence’ yearly on my ....
Still love those sleds and my newest a Viper yes it’s a cat with Yamaha drive train but I love it as well

Most definitely you are right. And yes mine has weeped for years. If it left drips in trailer or floor I would do something but good so far. DEAL!

I think this could be done without much issue.

Design ideas
  • A CNC machined flange with an o-ring grove will supply the seal to the chaincase cover
  • This flange will be the "base" in which the sheet metal aluminum oil tank is welded to
  • Proper internal baffling would eliminate any certain concern of oil starvation depending on sled angle

My harley doesn't leak
My fast "Harley" never leaked oil....maybe has something to do with Porsche? LOL
