No shantys no ice crossings for me. Went through a river 20 years ago with my daughter on sled, only waist deep but still shook us up.
I always lead when we trail ride as I feel I can keep everyone behind me safe. Have had many close calls with maniacs coming the other way hogging the corners like they are the only one on the trail or thinking it is a one way trail and only them on it.
This has happened at least once on every trail ride in my many years of snowmobiling.

Yes leader has a big responsibility. Sure is nice to let someone else do it sometimes. I always watch out for the second guy in a oncoming group. They are playing catchup more often than not.

It's funny, we argue who is going to lead now...no one wants too, when we head north..I always have as I know the trails by heart, but so many close calls. And with the 3 or 4 small group of the same people year after year, it's fun to hang back and play a little without the responsibility the leader has.
And as unwilling leader once again by default, last Jan., I stopped at a road crossing stop sign and my son runs into me!!!! Ambulance to the ER in Utica for a possible broken leg. Thank God it was just a really bad bruise, possible hairline fracture. Have to pay attention 1000% all the time!!
Scene of the crime...a few weeks later, showed him what those red octagon things look like!

This is the reason one of my buddies will not lead ever. Hes scared to death that someone it going to hit him. I have no problem leading and having the responsibility of the safety of all my buddies behind me. Its always a good feeling when we get back to the cabin and everything had a good time and no one got hurt.

It looks like the UP is getting a nice snow storm today ( 6 to 10) and lake effect through out the week (inches here and there). Me and the Ms. is leaving Saturday AM for a four day trip to the UP (Brimley area/Casino) I am sure this weekend will be very heavy traffic due to the lack of good conditions so far here in Michigan, the speedracers will be out Saturday and early Sunday (always concerned with the wife and these wild riders even with her following me) then we should be good Monday/Tuesday.

Amen to that.

Hope you and your wife have a great weekend, yes there will be speed demons for sure, lakes are the place for speed runs not busy trails, but there is alway's some cowboy on a fast sled that just doesn't care about other trail riders enjoying the day, please be careful

Yup no matter this will for sure be a weekend to relax enjoy the sites and drive defensively. Just thinking about it is half the battle. Always ride with a cushion for a aggressive move out of the way.

Out on the lake with no helmet!!!! Probably had just pulled it out and went on a quick rip around to see if everything was working properly... we’ve probably all done something similar but never really though of the consequences if something goes wrong...

If you love your family and you love to ride, PLEASE wear a helmet!!!

Wow, that is just awful, you are probably right it was just a test ride to see if everything is working the way it should, I have done this to, you just think its a quick burn around before going out for a trail ride so no need for you to wear a helmet, his family must be just beside themselves for their loss.

Reports by EMS claim if he had a beacon or inflatable protection he would have probably survived... If ridding out west please spend a little extra money on Personal Protective Equipment... Someday it may SAVE your life!!!
It may help but if the people your riding with don't have the training and know how to search for a buried rider then it doesn't matter how much you spend on gear. I'm taking a group out the West Yellowstone/Big Ski area next week and I made all of them watch a few videos on what to do if someone does get caught in one. We are heading into high risk areas so the guys need to know what to do if something happens. Another problem I run into when I'm out in the backcountry and talk to someone who doesn't have any avalanche gear is they say "it cost to much for everything." I agree with that statement 100%. I know safety is important and you should pay for it but I bet I have $6-700 in avalanche gear. For some people that is way to much money to spend. I think if these companies found s way to lower their prices then a lot more people would be carrying the gear.

3 yes THREE!!! Snowmobile related deaths in Michigan alone in 2019... we are 5% though the whole year and then to think the riding season is much shorter then that!!!

Please remember if riding alone more caution is needed because you have no one to back you up... no one to call for help if something tragic happens!!!

HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE your life may depend on it!!!
