Why do the Yamaha specifications call for regular unleaded on the Phazer GT and premium unleaded for the Phazer RTX. Is this correct? I am trying to decide between the two.
Really? My standard calls for premium.I believe if you run regular it will cause a power loss since knock sensor may lower timing.

The owners manual calls for 91 octane or higher on the GT or RTX. You can look at the manuals online. I see that the specs listed on the Yamaha website does say premium unleaded for the RTX and regular unleaded for the GT. I wonder if this was a typo on the 08 spec's and copied over to the 09 spec's?

I dont know but I would go with the 91 or up...its a little more costly but its always good to have the better stuff.

I run regular in my fx, my dealer told me i can, it will just bump the timing back

I've been running regular in my FX and it seems to be running OK. If I switch to premium, what differences in performance should I notice? Better fuel mileage, higher top speed, easier starting?
Thanks,
Rick

Just curious...I guess I should try a couple of tanks of premium to see. In all honesty I didn't even read the sticker by the fuel tank until after the first couple of tanks. By then, I was thinking everything seems to be OK.

Most people have reported that they haven't been able to tell the difference, myself included but I don't push mine extremely hard.Ricketts said:Just curious...I guess I should try a couple of tanks of premium to see. Please post your experience.

Ideally you want the lowest octane you can get without the knock sensor kicking in. Personally in my race sled I run about 89 No ethanol and seems to be ideal.

the better the octane the cleaner and more efficeint your engine is going to run, regular fuels have a bad habbit of leaving sediments behind depending on your location, also smaller towns with lower population use less premium fuels, therefore it sits in the tanks longer wich can actually reduce the octane levels over time. in all essance 89 is more then enough to gain a good ignition, i think running lower octane could increase your chances of fouling plugs as well and that is never a good thing, esspecially on a phazer.

maybe this is the reason for the hard starting issue some of us are having

I think Soul hammer may be on to something...I bought my FX used, this fall. It's cold starting was pretty bad. 10 seconds of cranking. After I put fresh gas and took it on a trip, its starts after 4 cranks in very cold weather. Much much better. I think the gas made all the difference.

To clarrify, I use 91 octane and don't have the cold start update
