Primary clutch exploded

Sidewinder moveable sheave 8.53" and the stationary sheave is 8.27", sheave angle 13.5*

Apex/Nytro/Viper clutch moveable sheave is 8.30" and the stationary sheave is 8.25", sheave angle 13.5*
I stand corrected, however I really thought the older clutches from 97 and up through 16 used the 14.5 degree sheaves.

Sooo.. why by a Sidewinder when you can buy a Cat with better clutches?
I think Yamaha should be going for and begin to sell the Sidewinder with the Apex Primary clutch and get rid of this junk Sidewinder primary! All of this crap going on with the Sidewinder is going to affect the good reputation Yamaha have had. They have become cheap on quality and expensive low quality sleds! IAnd Yamaha is doing nothing but hiding and dont say a #*$&@ about nothing! I get Yamaha more and more up my troat :(

I agree.....and so I swayed a few people toward a cat RR instead of a Winder. Just makes mores sense in the clutching dept.

But for looks, the Cats IMO are not as nice looking, and I don't like painted windows or their plastics design, and the color choices are terrible unless you like green. They do come with decent ski's, better/tougher clutch. Would need 21/41 gears at least, and a better looking window and graphics job for sure.

There is currently a warning on STM's website regarding running their clutches with Yammi 3 cylinder engines.

I wonder the weight of these clutches compared to Yamaha and the Cat, and if they are vibrating as much as the Yamaha's are?

IDK Dan, my buddy has last years T-Cat that is blacked out with the copper decals. It is a damn sexy sled.

I personally have no preference. I would buy which ever version I could get the best deal on.

Just got another private message of another sidewinder clutch coming apart. Same spot where I show the cracks from where the allen screws hold the weight pin sleeve. Took out his clutch guard, turbo tube and hodd/side panel.

Someone is going to get seriously hurt here!

How much HP? Not stock I assume?

Problem is, YAM doesn't give a crap about boosted sleds....If it works stock, is all they are worried about. At least they used to, not really sure anymore.

All those big Winder early sales, over the cat 9000s....all cause we all felt YAM clutching would be superior. And so now more guys will buy the Cat 998 is my guess.

This is starting to get my attention. I don’t go full on sky is falling over a couple incidents like a lot of people do here but there is starting to be enough to take notice. My only problem is there’s very little info on the specifics given to us in any of these cases. Reported cases, no background info. Even this thread here. A few posts to start off and then nothing, no follow up answers to the lingering questions. I’ll keep a close eye on my clutches and components for now. If I had to make a choice right now I’d probably go to the old Yamaha primary. They’re tried and proven on big hp and I have a lot of experience with them and tons of parts.

Remember the Phazers and Exciters from the 80's and early 90's. 56-75 hp. Oh wait, that's how much power we are adding with a tune. That's right, the entire amount of power that propelled most of us in those days. On top of 204 hp. Just think about that for a minute before crucifying their clutch system.

My buddies primary grenades last week, still under warranty. Dealer went to bat for him, but first question Yamaha asked dealer was is it tuned And we want a full diagnostic of the ecu.

At that point dealer couldn't peruse.

Many have switched back to the old style primary and having 0 issues....myself included.

This is the pic I received yesterday. Believe the sled is stock flashed.

***Update to my post here***
The sled is flashed stage 2 for cold air intake and exhaust but running stock weights with added weight rivets.

What the heck is everyone torquing those tiny little set screws to? Perhaps overtorquing with too much loctite then once it gets hot it expands.
