Maybe the Sidewinder/Thundercat was "low hanging fruit" for Yamaha and Cat, but I am still "blown away" by the final product every time I squeeze the trigger.
I think we were all hoping for more from the Yamaha and Cat partnership, but honestly, sleds have come so far already that major design breakthroughs will probably be rarer than three dollar bills. I know that there are a lot of "haters" when it comes to the Yama-Cats, but from my perspective the ride quality, the performance, the handling and the just plain "fun factor," have made the past five years of riding Yama-Cats the best snowmobiling years of my life. The Sidewinder has just made it that much sweeter.

I don't think Yamaha had anything to do with the Alpha or it would be in Yamaha's line up, Cat will move forward and have something new and Yamaha will stay behind with the old and refine, I also think Textron and Yamaha are talking for sure, Cat has Yamaha's 3 cyl motor in one of their sport SXS now so they are co designing together.Sure while the sidewinder is an awesome sled I wouldn't call it min-blowing. Its just and engine with a turbo. Guys have been doing that for years now. Its still put in the same procross chassis as before. Something mind-blowing is like the alpha. That is something nobody or company has ever done and it turned out to be and awesome product. That's the type of stuff I was hoping for when Cat and Yamaha got together.

Looked at a set of pipes for the polaris 850 in the catalog the other day. It also said it needed a programmer for the pipes. 17 hp increase for $1400.00.
For that kind of money the winder get another 100hp and clutch kit, intake and blow off valve.
So who wants a two stroke? Not me.

Just because they renew patents doesn't meant they are planning on building anything. Companies will renew patents just so the competition cant use the name or design. I work at a company the does this quite often.Well if you have not been paying attention to patents, yamaha has a supercharged engine thats going to hit the market and a new chassis...When is the question?????And they renewed the snosport trademark last year so you have that coming also(entry level sled?)...JUST THE FACTS!!!

Yamaha had nothing to do with the monorail. It wouldn't surprise me if Yamaha didn't even know about it until it was released. Cat engineers said they have been working on the design for close to 10 years so well before the Cat/Yamaha partnership. I wouldn't call it co-designed just because cat uses a Yamaha motor in there SxS. All Cat did was design a frame to fit the Yamaha motor. Now if Yamaha had helped designed the frame then it would have been co-designed.I don't think Yamaha had anything to do with the Alpha or it would be in Yamaha's line up, Cat will move forward and have something new and Yamaha will stay behind with the old and refine, I also think Textron and Yamaha are talking for sure, Cat has Yamaha's 3 cyl motor in one of their sport SXS now so they are co designing together.

Ya I wouldn’t expect production of any recent Yamaha patents. Yamaha has been filing patents on snowmobile products for many years and nothing was manufactured. Yamaha files patents to protect technology so if another company comes to market with a similar product Yamaha can ask for licensing of that technology or an outright settlement if infringement affects big bucks.Just because they renew patents doesn't meant they are planning on building anything. Companies will renew patents just so the competition cant use the name or design. I work at a company the does this quite often.

Well, til Yamaha develops something new or refines AC's problematic chaincase on the ProCross, I'll keep my 6 planted on a bulletproof DB chassis.
I'd love to try a Viper or SW, but if I wanted to walk home I'd buy a Cat directly.

Nobody knows what the engineers at Yamaha and Cat are co designing together or what part each company played in co designing products or what they are working on right now, even from the beginning of their partnership, but ... there are some that think they know.Yamaha had nothing to do with the monorail. Hyvo Chain and Much better gears along with the manual chain tensioner along with terribly valved rear shocks are all things that I believe Yamaha had changed vs 13 cats when the Viper came out. Reason I believe that is that the non Yamaha cats did not have any of them back in 14 when Viper came out. After that who knows.

Not starting an argument, but why the upper gear & bushing problems and tensioner backing off on the Vipers & Winders then??
I'll admit I haven't dug too deep as I don't own either, but have briefly read about problems.

I have 4K miles on a Viper that I have never walked home on.
Don’t get me wrong I loved my Yamaha Apex’s 2Vectors 2 and Venture ( over 30k miles On Delta box chassis) but it’s true that everyone in my family- young old male or female prefers to ride the Viper.

^ I have no doubts the ProCross has a better, more comfortable seating position, thus a nicer ride.
But I personally will not trust a driveline that's known and proven to fail.
A bushing in the chaincase? C'mon really? This isn't a 1971 Skiroule with a 22 horse 300 twin
