Replacement Top Gear Bushing

trainn.jpg

How do you tell if these are bad? Are they oblong and the gear is sloppy on the shaft? I have mine apart right now and if i hold the gear on the shaft i can get a little play from it side to side, i would assume i should have none. The bushing itself looks good but like i say there is a small amount of movement. When this does go bad is it just a bad vibration that is felt or something worse that happens?

If grey coating is gone on over half of it the wear is measurable and I would replace. Not saying it may last longer without damaging anything but I would not chance it.

Anyone try this bushing?

We're like that Hot Crazy Ex-girlfriend to Dan. He just can't stay away.
Great in the sack, but.....................................................................................just CRAZY!

Dan needs 2 sleds. I used to ride VT where i'd be better off on an 850.
That's why i ride Maine!
I am with you there, riding big moguls and a tight goat path is what i did when i was 18 and did not know any better, i still make some 18 year old decisions like blow a lot of cabbage on a turbo sled but smooth fast trails just feel so good!!

left to right BB-16 Sintered Iron/Copper Sleeve, Oil & PTFE Impregnated Sleeve, Steel Backed PTFE Lined Sleeve Bushing, Oil Impregnated Bronze Sleeve

I pressed the BB-16 Sintered Iron/Copper Sleeve in first to my 21 tooth gear. It was to tight on the shaft.
I then pressed the Steel Backed PTFE Lined Sleeve Bushing in. It fit the shaft perfectly with no slop or side to side movement. It was also super smooth on the shaft.
Do we think that will last?
I am going to try the bronze sleeves also and test for fit.

I really have no clue. I suspect anything with the PTFE coating will not last since that is what wears off of the stockers first. At that point it depends how thick the coating was on there as to how much play gear has when worn off.

What kind of lube are you guys running in these chaincases?

Just doing some pre season maintenance now, over 11000 kms, stock top gear with no oil holes and the bushing is still mint, No gold worn off the bushing, tight on the shaft still. I run my chain tighter than spec, and use mercruiser outdrive lube in my chaincase.

I believe there's been multiple threads here on this subject. Maybe do a search (box top right of the page)? There's a wide variety of lubes being used.

I use synthetic tranny fluid. Switched to this in 2013 after the first bushing failure left me hanging. Been using this for over 10,000 miles now in 3 different sleds with this chaincase. No issues.
