It will be interesting to see what Dan has to say about the 850? As we all know he is probably the most unbiased opinion you will ever find. Combine that with years of sledding knowledge and the scrutiny of a tax auditor.....I’m anxious to hear the reports!

I really enjoyed the 850 I rode. For tighter trails, it is probably a better choice than a Winder.
I can't imagine riding one after getting used to those 270r tunes that Dan had. Now the SS tunes are out and I'll bet Dan's wheels are spinning big time.

When I ride my friends 850 I find myself holding it to the bar all the time......Hard to beat the power of a tuned Winder!!

You need both. I'm waiting on my second 850 to come in and still have my 290hp winder. 4100 miles on my 18 850 and 2000 on my 17 winder. You just can't beat that raw hp pull of the winder on the rivers and lakes, but hitting 50 this year and the 850 is just so much easier on riding and fun on the trails. Hate to say it but the quality and reliability goes to the 850 also, even though I've never had an issue with the winder.

Reliability goes to the 850 eh? In another 4k miles your engine will be worn out. Oh yea with 4K on it already you lucky the motor hasn’t blown up yet. Maybe this is the year you learn your lesson?

How did this turn into an 850 vs Sidewinder conversation?

Post #61How did this turn into an 850 vs Sidewinder conversation?
Ok. I have not tried that since the current chain I have so its possible my original and new one are wrong. So rookie question. Do you count the pins or the plates? 25-45 gearing. If your having wear issues as I did previously.
Buy a NEW chain and upper gear with holes. Run the chain at least 1 turn loose on the tensioner and overfill the chaincase 4 oz over the sight glass. I always used redline heavy shock proof.
Upper Bushing material is not the issue, I have the stock bushing in now, with over 2500 miles and zero wear, 270 horsepower.
I thought it was from running the chain too tight but others here say they have ran their chain loose and are still getting excessive wear.
The only other modification to my setup was I replaced the chain, ran it loose and it’s holding up great. Normally I would have had to replace the bushing every 1000~1500 miles.
If the pitch on a HYVO chain is wrong/stretched it will climb on the sprockets causing upper bushing wear.
Some have had wear issues since driving off the showroom floor others have not. This tells me something has not been manufactured correctly. HYVO chain is a very precise piece requiring tolerances to within a thousandth of an inch. I would not doubt some of these chains have been manufactured incorrectly. I have been working on industrial machinery for many years, seeing many “Brand New” parts that were not made correctly or didn’t work.
In fact things have gotten worse in these past few years.

I originally did this only cause my sled went out for what I was asking. And to a great new owner too boot. I would have jumped at a BLUE SRX and nearly went for the jetstream blue, or even considered the blue/orange SE and adding shocks ect. But always truly wanted a 129''. In the end, I would have been starting all over with mods and all the same fixes I had already made. Lots of bucks there, didn't make sense.
So I decided to take a season off from the money pit turbo hobby I love so much....Felt the cheapest way to ride and have fun without MODS is the 850. I swap often with buds, one has a 600XRS and other the 850XRS, both very similar in our tight trails, but the 850 does pull like a muther corner to corner. Where it peters out is where the winder keeps pulling hard. But for MOST of our trails, the 850 truly is king and the 998s are tanks. Especially when its pounded out at end of weekend, that is when the 850 just works so well off the tops of biggest moguls. They do make you feel 18 yrs old again.
My biggest gripe right now is hearing the oil usage....GRRR.....not used to burning oil, much less paying huge dollars for BRP oil and then there is the fact I need to carry oil on our trips....it will be a blast around home trails but trips to Qc I will certainly miss my turbo 4s!
My guess is it will be here one season for me only, especially if we get some fixes from YAM and for me personally I want to try a Cat next. Working on this Cat RR here this past week of my buds, the Team clutches and 24/50 gearing just has me enamored... . Mostly cause of the ZERO deflection, and instant snap. Its quite fun. I rode this sled NEW without breakin, on my trails....it snapped just as good as my 270 tuned winder corner to corner! Its bone stock! So Im all about those 24/50 gears and no deflection setup. If I must go with a winder(maybe a killer color I cannot pass on) I WILL install 24/49 or so gearing with Cat chain. I would love to get TEAM clutches too. So you can see a Cat will be what i'm looking for next, as retrofitting team clutches,Jshaft and gears would be costly to a winder. Also I believe Cat will continue their snowmageddon pricing this spring(or sooner) which may get me onto a Tcat easier then the Winder pricing. Warranty will be sketchy with cat as per usual compared to YAM, but we all know the items that go wrong now with these sleds, and I will apply the fixes prior.
Looking forward to this season still...but missing my baby already!

Count the pins, or number of outside plates X2.
That is some strange gearing? Either way you count the number of pins for the chain length when ordering the length. Your gonna be up around 95 or 96 with that weird gear combo.

Make sure you get genuine Borg Warner chain!
I ordered mine from Wahl Brothers racing.

Thought was the bigger top gear would wear less than original. Nope.Count the pins, or number of outside plates X2.

We're like that Hot Crazy Ex-girlfriend to Dan. He just can't stay away.
Great in the sack, but.....................................................................................just CRAZY!
Dan needs 2 sleds. I used to ride VT where i'd be better off on an 850.
That's why i ride Maine!
