Start
We started the ride at home. I met up With my friend Mikkel on the Lakselva River.
We rode the trail up to Lake Nedrevann, past the Army Base at Porsangmoen, to Lake Gagga.
Then to Lake Øvrevann, past lake Vuollajavri where we started the Climb up to the tundra.
At the treeline up on the hills of Vuollanjunnis. My sled to the left.
Mikkel is lighting up a sigarette, kinda windy up on the hill.
Lake Vuollajavri at the foot of the mountain.
Ready to enter the Plains and the tundra past. The Climb continues past the treeline and into the mountain plain.
Entering Lake Leavnnjasjavri.

Mount Vuorje to the south, 3100 ft.
The mountain range to the North of Lake Leavnnjasjavri, 3000+ ft.
A few shutes to Climb if you're crazy enough, we're not because of the Avalanche hazard.
A rider got killed a few days ago, we're playing safe staying out of the Dangerous spots.
My friend looking around to figure out who is on the lake today.
Groups of People were Fishing out on the lake.
The tundra, to the west of the lake.
The Mountains to the South of the lake.
Another pic of the Moutain Vuorje, colors and light are constantly changing.
In the Mountains to the North east.
On Our way up Mount Vuollanjunnisgaissa.
On the summit.
The Gaissa mountain range seen from Mount Vuollanjunnisgaissa.
The Lakselv valley, the Porsanger fjord and the eastern mountain range in the far distance.
My sled.
On the summit.
On Mount Silbachokka. My friend and his turbo sled.
My turbosled.
The Vuollanjunnisgaissa mountain range on the far side of the valley.
To the South.
My sled broke Down on the trail on Lake Nedrevann, it threw a rod :-(
Luckily it broke Down Close to the road, only half a mile or less than a kilometer from the highway.
We rode home on my friends sled and picked up the trailer, loaded the sleds up and drove home.
We removed the intercooler and found a hole in the engine Block and this piece of the Connection rod outside the engine. Prior to the break Down the engine made a ticking sound, all of a sudden the engine just quit.
No end trip or end odo because of the break Down.

We got hit by a blizzard on Tuesday April 22.
On my way to work.
Outside the county hall.
In the afternoon outside Our house.
It continued to snow into the evening.
By 10PM we had 4-6 inches or 10-15 cm of fresh snow on the ground.
At higher altitude it dumped 12-16 inches or 30-40 cm of snow.
Conditions in the Mountains are super, we're going to have great spring riding this year.
I hope to ride until mid May or as long as the mountain trail are open.

Saturday at noon.
I'm unloading firewood for the summer and autum season.
I have stored enough to last until the snow flies in early November NeXT Winter.
Snow is still good even after a week With temps well above 32F or 0C.
It's getting thin, but we still have about a foot or 30 cm left.
Filling up the sled in case weather is getting better.
Weather was #*$&@ With rain, sleet and snow for the Whole weekend.
We didn't care to leave the cabin at all because of the wet weather.
The Mountains did get a fair amount of snow as it was below freeze at higher altitude.
Instead we stayed inside, playing games and having a good time together With the kids

End trip.
End odo.

Even though snow is gone around my house it's not far to trailer to get to good snow.
Above 300 meters or 1000 ft winter is still on. Spring has been put on delay for more than two weeks so far With no spring weather in sight.
Loading up the trailer.
The mountain Gussavarri some 12 kilometers or 8 miles away. Altitude 804 meters or 2400 ft.
Winter-land Ahead. Mount Gussavarri.
On the foot of the mountain.
On the parkinglot at Mount Caskil, Winter is waiting at the end of the parking lot.
Loading up the sled. My kids are happy to go sledding With their daddy
Start odo.
We stopped 1.6 kilometers or 1 mile from the parkinglot to shot a few Pictures.
The trail back to where we came from.
The snow was dry and Cold as temps were blow freeze.'
We had 10 cm or 4 inches of fresh snow last night and up here the snow came as fresh powder.
Needless to say the conditions were Perfect.
The trail Ahead from our first stop. No groomers needed up here, nature has done a Perfect job making our trail as good as any trail anywhere
Entering the narrow canyon called Perleporten or Saint Peter's Gate.
The snow conditions are to die for.
The Girls are playing in the snow.
Creating snow Angels.
Inside the canyon.
Leaving the canyon.

Continued from the last post....
8 kilometers or 5 miles past the canyon we stopped for another photoshoot.
This pic is shot from a hill and back to where we came from. The canyon in the Distance.
A cabin used by the Reindeer herdsmen to the left of the trail in the bottom of the Luostejohka valley.
On top of the hill we stopped to shoot a few more pics of the views.
Mount Luostegaissa to the left and Mount Halkkavarri to the right.
Altitude 900-1000 meters or 2700-3000 ft.
The trail Ahead.....
Where we came from.
We rode across the plain for a while before entering the valley Beyond the hills.
Mount Suonjirgaissa in the Distance, altitude 1030 meters or 3100 ft.
A view to the South, Mount Luostegaissa.
Down in the valley on Lake Gurrojavri.
Mount Luostegaissa seen from the lake.
We rode across the lake to find a suitable camp site to use later in the afternoon.
We found a spot at the other end of the lake and decided to come back later on.
A few anglers out Fishing, seen from our camping site.
We continued further into the Tundra, at a crossroad.
Somewhat confusing, all trails are Trail 20, glad we have the markers telling where to go.
We have no problem as we're familiar With the area, but visitors may get puzzled LOL.
We're heading up Trail 20 to Justinjavri, which is this way.
We're closing in on Lake Suoidnejavri. Mount Suonjirgaissa to the east.
Mount Suoidnevarri and Lake Suoidnejavri Ahead up the hill.
On the lake. We're trying to Catch Arctic Char.
My daughter Linnea on the Reindeer hyde waiting for me to finish drilling a hole in the ice. Ice thickness is 100 cm or 40 inces.
Finished drilling. My oldest daughter Amanda trying to Catch something to eat.
2 PM in the afternoon. An angler at the far end of the lake.
The sled on the lake, a few anglers to the North east.
My Mora ice drill in front of the sled. Bore diameter is 15 cm or 6 inches to be able to Catch the big ones LOL, some day the diameter will be needed. 2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs Arctic Char is not uncommon. Trout in lakes at lower altitude can be up to 9 kg or 19 lbs in weight, 2.5 or 5.5 lbs are more common though.

A view to the North. More anglers at the far end of the lake.
After an hour With no response from the Arctic Char we gave up Fishing. We were getting hungry and wanted to go on a sight seeing in between the Mountains.
First we rode North to Lake Justinjavri. People have set up camp sites With tents for up to 16 People. I used to do that together With friends way back in the 90s.
The Girls are having a great time in the Nila
We rode back towards the crossroad
Before we headed to the South towards Lake Vansjavri, from the lake we rode west up on the ridge of Vansnjunnis until we were Close to the Luostejohka valley and the Mountains.
The Luostejohka valley, the snowmobile trail is seen to the right in the pic.
Linnea is having a look over the edge of the hill.
Mount Gagga. Our cabin is on the far side of the mountain some 32 kilometers or 20 miles away.
Mount Halkkavarri, altitude 1020 meters or 3060 ft.
The Luostejohka valley, Mount Halkkavarri to the left and Mount Luostegaissa to the right.
At this time we were absolutely starved and went back to the camp site we had found earlier in the day.
I prepared a dinner made of Smoked Reindeer Ribs With onion and sweet peppers to With the meat.
Cooked over open fire, my Girls says my bush Cooking is even better than my Cooking at home LOL hahahaha.
Linnea and Amanda are enjoying their dinner.
We have With us all the gear and firewood we need for bush-Cooking.
We found a small hill free of snow to put or camp.
5 PM in the afternoon, the sun is to the west. The Girls are playing on a small hill Close by our camp site.
A few anglers are still out trying to Catch something for dinner I hope they had better Luck than we had.

Continued from last post....
I had a great day out With my daughters,
I'm a proud dad out enjoing the great outdoors With my kids
We're packing up at 6PM, time to go home.
On our way Down we encountered a broken Down Arctic Cat... or maybe it had run out of fuel?
The Canyon Ahead on the far side of the plain.
Closing in on the parkinglot at Caskil, some 5 kilometers or 3 miles away Down the valley.
Spring is nowhere to be found....
Mount Gussavarri, light is fading at 7PM.
End trip.
End odo.
What a great day out With my kids, great memories to carry for the rest of my life
I Guess they feel it the same way as they want to go back ASAP.

Saturday morning. We have got another 10 cm or 4 inches of snow.
We had the trailer loaded and everything was ready for the Saturday ride.
When departing from home it was still snowing. On the way north out the fjord to Olderfjord we drove through 15 cm or 6 inches of snow, we met the plow truck With the plow Down clearing snow off the road.
From Olderfjord we drove up the valley to Lake Eidevann where we unloaded the sled and Nila.
We parked alongside the road as all parking lots were occupied for miles.
Lake Eidevann.
Start odo.
On the trail, Lake Eidevann in the background.
It's a beautiful day With almost Clear blue skies and no Wind to speak of. Temps are around freeze or slightly above.
The valley below.
The last forest on this part of the tundra, the treeline is 300 meters or 1000 ft Beyond the trees to the North there is no more trees, zip nada none before you hit the Arctic Osean.
Above the treeline.
The trail Ahead to the North. Tundra, Plains, lakes and Mountains is all there is up here, but it's very beautiful this time of the year
A short ride up the trail we entered Lake Øvre Karlvann.
A Fishing competition were about to start at noon.
Many sledders and anglers had gathered at the lake.
Mount Gardevarri in the background.
The views from the hillside above the lake is absolutely breathtaking.
The Gardevarri Mountain.
The lake was groomed by nature, perfectly flat. Riding conditions were as good or better than it gets

My wife Heidi.
The camp. We joined Heidi's cousin and his kids at the Campfire.
We were Cooking beef, Corn, Sweet Peppers and stuff in a pan over open fire, the traditional way
After the super bush meal and the end of the Fishing competition we headed futher North into the Mountains. We wanted to go Fishing on a small lake called Lake Ande Mattejavri, it's underneath a steep mountain Ridge.
Kids are playing on the steep slope. No worry this spot is not prone to avalances, the snow is shallow and rocks are showing all over the slope.
A view to the east from the lake, I love the Plains on the Tundra this time of the year.
The mountain Ridge.
I would not go underneat the the snow hanging out from the Cliffs. That spot is prone to Avalanches.
Shot this pic on our way back home...... what do you think.... it's awesome up there.
You can ride in any direction (though it's not allowed by Law) the conditions are superb.
We chose to stick to the trail, the fine is NOK 8.000,- or $ 1.250 USD if caught outside of the trail system.
Four sledders got caugth and fined this day as the Police showed up, we rode the trails and had no problems With the cops
A view to the North, back from where we came from.
The Plains go on forever.
A few kilometers or a mile from the road where we parked our car and trailer. As you can see the tundra continues to the horizon and Beyond.
End trip.

I was away on work down south in Oslo the last week.
Spring has arrived Down South, trees are green and no snow left.
Pictures are shot from my hotel room and around my hotel on May 5.
The river Akerselva.
My hotel, Radisson Blu Nydalen.
The contrast is stark, from spring Down South to Winter up North.
Start odo.
Sunday noon, May 11.
We just crossed Lake Øvrevann. We parked the car and trailer on the parkinglot on the far end of the lake in the pic. My wife Heidi, the kids are inside the Nila.
The lake ice is holding up great, no wather on top.
The Mountains in the background show no signs of spring yet.
Altitude is around 80 meters or 250 ft above sealevel. 25 kilometers or 15 miles inland from the fjord and the Ocean.
There are still enough snow on the trail to ride.
Snow is leaving slowly at lower elevations around the lake, it may hold up for one more week before it's done. This trail usually Closes Down on May 5. but because of the snow and the late spring this year it's held open until May 18.
The trail Ahead.
We rode over the hill and Down the valley of Vuollejohka and across Lake Vuollejavri.
Notice the open water in the middle of the lake, it's downstream a river inlet. We had to do a detour further Down the lake before crossing over the west side of the lake.
We stopped for a while to remove some clothing. Temps were well above freeze and the sun was shining. Weather was calm With no Wind to speak of. Nice to be outside on such a beautiful day.
Snow is getting thin but it's still rideable.
Up on top of the hilled called Livnasbakken. Outside the trail the snow is gone but the trail have some snow still.
We had to ride on gravel in some spots, Heidi and the Girls walked across the spots With no snow. Hard to tow a load on gravel.
We took a different route on our way down to stay on the snow.
I crossed the gravel pit and waited for my wife and kids.
From this point forward conditions were excellent.
The trail Ahead.
We climbed the hills and arrived on the plain. The trails up on the tundra were absolutely flat, wonderful riding. We arrived at Lake Leavnnjasjavri. Kids are playing in the snow.
