For me it changes depending on the ride. I don't have a huge luggage bag on my sled as I usually travel light. But there are days when I carry around a few more items that won't fit into my small-ish bag on the sled. Those are the days when I throw on the back pack. For probably 80% of my riding I never need my backpack. But for the other 20% it depends ......
If it is an off-trail day - I'll carry around my shovel. Maybe a spare set of gloves in case my primary ones get wet. Small snack.
If it is a super long trail day - I'll carry around a gatorade and maybe some snacks. Depends if we stop for lunch or not.
If it's a super cold day - I'll throw on the back pack to carry extra clothes - either to put on, or carry if I take a layer off.
If it's a multi-day ride - I typically only do one of these every season with some work friends. Then it's a change of essential clothes and bathroom items.
If it's a day riding with my boys - Then its everything and the kitchen sink! You never know what they will need LOL

Some of those wanna be mountain riders just gotta have it so they look cool standing up driving down a perfectly groomed trail. And your right, weed and the camel pack full of Jack!!
I would have my mom pack me a lunch too and bags of snacks.. maybe a band-aid in case I cut myself trying to open the bag of weed..LOL

Hair gel, thong, extra set of goggles, cash and some pills to make things right again.......the usual.
And if I'm riding by myself. I'll add my current "Beaver Hunter" mag & a travel size bottle of Jergens.....

I don't wear a backpack, but if I did, I would carry couple drinks, extra jacket, and a couple Pistons for my brothers Assault. Lol

Pack one .... 2l hot cranberry juice, emergency snacks, spare balaclava, face shield, gloves, mitts, firestarter kit, headlamp, jump pack, old style 3G flip phone in a floating glow in the dark bottle, flares, air horn, goggles, ice picks, knife, pliers, handheld GPS, spare batteries
Pack two ... comealong, ice screw, ropes, pirsig loops, carabiners, saw, shovel, firestarter kit, engine oil
In these parts I would be considered a minimalist compared to some. Most guys have more gear than this and they keep it in a box. I feel the box is too heavy and when trouble comes up I can grab my stuff and get walking if I have to get off the lake for shelter and a fire. See my recent post in the Venture Lite/MP section ..... MP Sunk pics. We had to leave our sleds but I had pack one, my friend left his stuff in the box on his sled in the water.
If I ever meet jtmetal I think I'll leave my gloves on thank you.

Underwear can be used for both. Leave the backpack home..LOL
My Sons rides with a backpack. First aid kit, fire starter, water and food bars. Emergency blankets and bags. Oh, flare guns also. Yes we have spent the night in the snow. I don’t ride with one but I do have the same gear in my dash bag I really like the flare guns. Lol
