So. Whats in those backpacks that everyone is wearing?

I carry one on and off depending on where I'm riding and who I'm with. The biggest reason I have one is for the hydration pack (especially when out west). I never used to realize how thirsty I was while riding until I had one.

Shovel and axe if I'm off trail riding or in unfamiliar areas.
Ball cap or beanie for stops.
Spanner wrench and float tool (easier than taking the hood off to get at these items).
Contacts, solution, and glasses in case I lose one while riding.
Wallet, if I get stopped by the DNR so I don't have to dig in my snowpants or worry about it falling out of my pocket.
GoPro and mounts, if I end up somewhere where I want to film a little bit.
13mm socket and ratchet currently. I just put a new track on my sled and I assume overtime it will stretch a little bit, this allows me to adjust track tension if I start to ratchet.

I should also mention that I ride a Nytro with NO storage besides the small pouch under the hood.

My buddie rides a arctic cat f7 and has a pink droopy fox bag.
looks like a pink nut sack for his back. His is filled with clutch parts , belts, tools food and everything else to fix that pos on the trail..I call it the dps
(DROOPY PINK SACK)
I think he might even carry an extra engine. Maybe even a spare sled if you dig deep. Oh yeah and tp to wipe his tears when his sled breaks down.
Pow kerplunck rickety rickety .

As much as I didnt want to Im going to switch from my tunnel bag to a backpack. Sick of bags freezing up and wearing the paint off my tunnel. Should be easier for when we stop to bring stuff with instead of leave it on the sled.

You should sneak a couple packs of almonds into his DPS.......then you could rename it DPNS.

I always wear one no matter how far we are going. I think everyone pretty much carries the same stuff in them more or less. I also keep a mobile charger (even tho there is one on the sled and I also keep a booster pack in it as well) in it which is nice to recharge the phone or GPS while stopped as most places don't seem to mind if you steal a few kWh. Plus its nice to keep a ball cap in to cover up that helmet hair!

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that regardless of what you put in them, you carry it on you. I like being able walk into the restaurant/bar/warming station without digging around in tunnel bags while your buddies are waiting for you because everything is already on you.

Depending on the ride I wear my camelbak ski pack. Usually have a shovel, multi tool, some bull-line, beef jerky, Water or gatorade, toilet paper in a ziploc bag, spare pair of goggles with a different lens, extra pair of gloves and batteries for my goggle fans and gps. Plus it gives me somewhere to keep layers as I need to remove or add through the ride. We tend to do more "back country" riding where we are far from any trails or roads, so any break downs need to be fixed in the bush to get the sled out, I've used a log and rope a few times to fix a broken spindle and broken ball joint.

I have heard of people breaking their back when they land on the back pack during a crash.
Nobody wants to crash but sometimes it happens.
I don't wear a back pack and would rather have a bag on my sled.

Breaking backs with or without some sort of a tekvest?

From what I seen last weekend, the backpacks didn't help one bit! Lots and lots of gold stars were issued to those backpackers during their stuck. Most never even opened the mysterious backpacks which leads me to believe they are just carrying around bubble wrap or a pinecone collection? hmmm?

OMG.. exactly my point.. love it!!

For the next TY ride we need to have a shovel contest for all the backpackers. We can line up all the sleds in some deep snow and burp the throttle a few times so they are good and buried so that the Flap-Indicator is pointing at fully stuck (Thats when you snow flap is pointing at the sky rather then the ground) First person to assemble their shovel and unstuck themselves wins a prestigious award.
