Stud Length

Ran my first 1000 miles with stock 1.25 by 137" track. Sled was tuned to 280hp and had 192 1.575 Megabytes. Good performance, ran track tight and no issues. Sled still lacked transfer as all 137's do. Tried racewerx adjuster and not much difference even on the lowest setting.

Changed track to a new storm that is 1.5" in the center and 1.25" on the sides and put in 240 1.86 triggers as I wanted something universal to use for local racing and trail riding. Also turned up the hp to over 300 on pump and 330++ with c16. Transfer is no longer an issue in loose snow or hardback. Had to adjust racewerx to the max setting to dial back transfer. I know this setup isn't for everyone but after 2000 trail miles on it and some local friendly racing it gets the job done without having to resort to chissels and changing them out for trail riding as my sled is just a trail sled that can be raced for fun on the weekend.

Happy to report that I found the cure to the 137" transfer problem, just throw traction and Horsepower at it! ;)

How much top end did you lose going to the Storm 1.5" from the RipSaw 1.25"?

Sled has stock gearing limiting it to 127mph. Easily attains top speed before and after I installed the storm track but the traction on groomed trails and loose snow is much better with the storm. It may loose a mile or 2 up top if you are geared higher or not tuned but well worth the benefits in all snow conditions IMHO!
 
Hmmm. I'm starting my build of my new '18 LTX and was just going to stud the RipSaw, but you have me thinking now even more. I liked what VX1R had to report, but you're the first to share results studded and that top end didn't suffer. I'm tuned with TD's big ones, so no worries there. But I assumed the Storm would suffer top end and mileage, maybe it is as good as Camso claims?

I highly recommend it. Last Sunday my father and I ran over 200 miles on perfectly groomed trails. He still has the stock 1.25" with 192 1.6 Hornets and 280 tune. Fuel mileage was within a liter between the 2 sleds with mine actually getting better mileage at average trail speeds between 40 and 70mph. Pic below is of conditions last Sunday which yielded over 19mpg (imperial gallon which is 4.54609 liters) for both sleds. And just an FYI, consider that mileage trail touring miles as my father just turned 71 on the weekend and he doesn't travel over 70mph but enjoys the acceleration of the tune!

It appears you are running a 6-4 pattern for the 240 total? Any "nicks" with those long studs?

Running a 6-4 pattern with all double backers in the center yep. Using BRP tall and wide tunnel protectors in the back (3) and keeping track tight, no issues knock on wood after 2000 miles and counting as it looks like we will be riding until May this year... :)
 
Ugh, and thus it begins . . . I just ordered the Storm 150 and studs from CB Performance. It's going to be a LOOOOONG Summer.

Hey guys, as an aside since we're talking patterns too - I just got CB Performance's template - it's awesome. Made of metal. I'd never consider buying another another over-priced Woody's template ever again. @**sj** recommended the same in another thread. This thing can get passed down to my kid's kid's.

X2 on the CB Performance template. It works awesome! It comes with layout drawings for different numbers of studs in different patterns. I chose 144 studs down the middle on my 137" track. 132 single backers & 12 double backers (sown in red) are used in the pattern.

This results in 25 scratch lines in a 16 window pattern that repeats three times. This puts studs in the center of the track but I have had no center heat exchanger protector and I have had zero issues with stud damage anywhere in my tunnel running 1.500" studs with STM heat exchanger and tunnel protectors.

I do have some nicks in my front heat exchanger most likely from when I let my track get loose enough to ratchet. With the big HP tunes you have to keep the track very tight to prevent this.

Will this template work on the srx track with these so called silent pads?

The silent pads on my Viper and Sidewinder tracks did not cause issues. The stud heads will pull down flush if it is on or partially on a silent pad. Some guys go to the trouble of cutting the silent pads down flush but that is not required IMO.
 
not necessary... zero vibration when studded with the right studs... if you had vibration before bet you ran woody's
