Team Primary on Winder secondary mocked up

I didnt think a jp would take that much rear spring without crushing it but sounds like you have a great recipe.

Time will tell I guess....Like I said I am a Cat guy just wanted to try something different from the traditional recipes as I am a Yamaha newbie, but this is my 4th turbo and I have a 998 Promod.
I really like the stock gearing in my 19 XTX 141 SE, 21/41 is a real good gear set with my current clutch set up, most I would drop is to a 22T, but quite honestly I doubt that I will.

Awesome Mike!!
We have 2 2017 Cats and now my 19 141 Winder, all running 290-300 hp tunes, all studded, and all of us have lots of tuning years.
On our 2017 Cats we completely punished the new version 112 Cat, chopping throttle, WOT 125mph runs all the belt blowing ways...and the 112 will take a beating.
Dayco if I can remember grenaded on us, and no matter what belt we tried on our Cats if you looked in our side panels you will see us running the 112 Cat belt.
This was all done with stock clutches, mostly Dalton components, studded aggresively. (However all clearnced and indexed, and my 17 has Ronnies torsional conversion, but the others are running fully stock drivens with just a spring change.
One thing I can tell you about the Cat 998s is mine did not like tall gearing at 21/38...possibly if you drove rock hard groomed everyday its ok, but I had belt issues with the tall ratio in my 2017 Cat.

Now on my new 19 141 Winder this thing is a myth....We didnt have success using Daves bar, I need to revisit that...however when we used parralel bar method from SJ, we measured right close to 60mm, and mine does not have any shims behind the driven from factory.
So....I wanted to go sledding...took it out with a combination of FPP and homemade clutch recipe for 290 tune....I tortutred this thing trying to blow a belt off it, held it wide open at 125 plus, busted trail for 20 miles, and off hard on the throttle for 350 miles....no rubber transfer on primary, 8JP looks new....One thing I have found is that this sled likes LOTS of driven side pressure, it took two of us to preload my driven...and the sled is hauling the mail.
Stock gearing, 1.6 Cobra, heavy rollers in the driven, Dalton helix etc. I have a brand new 825 to try as well....and a Pro4 Primary.

I have a Team Primary on my bench loaded with my 17 set up using Dalton products, however I am waiting for you to test your set up.

Awesome thread Mike and thanks for all you do.

I've found the same thing with my Yamaha primary setup last week. Went to the EPI purple at 0-1 as my White Dalton was not here yet. It really seems to like that heavy side pressure, I started with the 41-37 and ended up with the stock 35 back in it. I do think I may like the 39-35 better in it perhaps, and that was using the 8DN Apex belt. I am running the 22-41 gear and that Yamaha recipe worked really well for me last week. Very consistent RPM and super clean clutches using the 8DN. Real happy with the topend I had with that, pulls like a bear with the added side pressure! I think any less driven spring and its just to weak to keep a hold on the belt in the driven clutch on the big tunes.

I'll try this Team this weekend with the Dayco XTX and see how that does, I believe that belt may be a bit to soft for the power were making. Also have a Cat 104 here to run as well. I do like the hard belts and I bet the hard 104 would work well just upping the torsion on the Dalton white or even going to the slightly stiffer Dalton Black/Lime to keep a hold on that hard 104 and keeping the RPM up on it. We'll see. I'd have to pickup a 112 to go that route, but this is all great information and we appreciate it!

keeping a close eye on this. Even if the cat clutch is no better for wear, if it is quieter I am in. Cannot stand the damn sound. I will say that I blew my first belt at 2200 miles and the 8JP is good until it starts to get thin and when yoiu pull it hard on top it will actually jump in the secondary and snap the belt. I had a new belt but really wanted to see where the limit was for these belts with my sled. My offset etc is good so I am happy with belts lasting 2000 mls just hate the damn clatter. I will change mine at 1000 and not worry about it.

Hey Brother!

Man if I get over 1000 I will be happy and start thinking about swapping it out...LOL!

Just a side note on the rattling primary....The Hurricane stub shaft also reduces rattle a ton. Mike weighed the TEAM to be approx 2lb heavier then the YAM primary, and so this extra weight, either with the TEAM or heavier stub shaft, reduces this engine's harmonics immensely. Im on the fence of which way to go, as they are both similar in overall cost with stub being cheaper tho.

Hey Dan,

Mine has been good but I spent alot of time getting the offset right etc back at the beginning and I think it paid off. I am also not a hard charger so I am sure that plays a role. Not sure the stub shaft is the way to go after seeing a couple had failures. The pulses from this motor breaks #*$&@ that is for sure. I think the heavier mass of the team may be the way to go to quiet this down. Really hate the sound. won't make me sell it as it is a blast on trail. Gotta say max 17 is tons of fun with the earlier spool. I am sure that played a role in my belt going along with wide open for 2500 feet or so and 125 mph. Big grin ear to ear too for the last 600 miles. My poor doo buddies just cringe when we hit straight stretches any longer than 1000 feet. Cheers

Did the stub shaft have failures or did they not hold the STM primary properly? Have there been failures with the Yamaha clutch? I have only heard of problems with non stock clutches.
If the stub shaft works with the Yamaha clutch, there would be no need for secondary machining like the Team set up.

Mike, who do you get your Dalton parts from? Being they are in Canada they don’t seem to be favorable to buy just one item from such as a spring.....aka shipping.

Ran the 8dn belt today. Tried many different setups in the secondary. I only ran the 240r tune today.
Started out with 35 helix and epi purple set at 0-1. Sled was real snappy and pulled hard, rpm's were right on, belt and clutches are warm. Switched wrap on spring to 0-2, no so snappy and rpm's down a little.
Switched to 41-37 helix purple epi set at 0-1, not as snappy and rpm's were down some. With this helix when I squeeze throttle at 65 mph the belt would chatter like slipping, felt thu the handle bars like a bad vibration. Tried other springs also.
The best set up today was the 35 helix with purple epi set at 0-1. I pushed this set up hard and could not believe how it delivered corner after corner.

What do you have in the primary?

I see more people are trying the strait 35 with big secondary springs with decent results. I would have thought that combo would put a bunch heat in the belt. I’ll have to give it a try.
I wonder if the primary will need a bunch of weight to compensate?
