Here is the biggest advantage to installing a cold air intake:
When installing mine, I mounted it as high as I could, facilitating much more airflow to the clutches. In addition, I drilled some extra holes in the clutch guard to allow incoming air more access for better cooling. There were 32 holes in the clutch guard from the factory, after removing the airbox, I drilled an additional 51 holes.
Now when looking into the air intake ram I see a clear path to the clutches. This should exponentially provide more cooling and help with belt issues.
Hope this helps......

You are on exact same train of thought I have been...I got mine all designed for less then 1/4 the cost of most out there. Crazy how cheap one can be made for.
The key is the size of filter used to allow for more vent air to get to the clutches, which allows it to be raised up some, and not hit the hood when its installed..... and I agree with all you are doing.
Only 2 things i think about....these clutches run cooler then any sled I have owned since my 06 apex, so not sure more airflow is even needed here, but surely it cannot hurt.
And also, the fact that the CAI should only be run with a tune, and not on stock ECU.
Nice work here,
Dan

SJ, I did not take the guard off when doing this. Coincidently, I had to replace the lower panel due to damage suffered from the last blown belt. While the lower panel was off, I drilled the guard and the shavings simply hit the floor. It could be done with the panel on, just a matter of laying rag down and/or vacuuming the shavings afterward.

Yes, tune required for CAI.
I can only speak for myself here, but my clutches run hotter than anything I've ever owned. Been to dealer several times and verified alignment, offset, cc distance etc., and at 1600 miles I'm on belt #5. I drive it the same way I drove all my yamahas and I've never had belt issues until now. After a few long pulls, I can cook an egg on clutches, the belts just melt and disintegrate. I ran viper clutches end of last season with better luck and will continue testing.
I'm stoked we have some new old comers like you and Knappattak back on the site and back on Yamahas. One of you is bound to have a belt eater like mine and I won't be forced to figure this out alone!! Lol

Wow, that sucks.....are you talking WOT runs or all the time?
I ran toms when it was bone stock across the seguin trail for about 15 mins straight, approx 60-80mph constant. Pulled off and put hand on clutches both were really just luke warm, could leave hand on them as long as I wanted easily.
My 12004tec would cook my hand fast, although I never had any belt issues with the doo.
Any changes to clutching or stock? I am gonna change just about all components just not happy with the stock setup.
BTW. Did you hook up the 2 vent lines or just 1? I think 1 is intake temp, not sure if other can just vent to atmosphere,,,,no sled here yet for me to go thru it all.

Only Wot runs.
Running dalton weights, Huge difference over stock weights.
Both vent lines run to CAI.

Ahh yes, well WOT runs of 1/4 mile or more, are surely gonna run hot sheaves, hard to stay cool when into OD.
For vent lines, did you install a nipple? It looks like your Alum elbow has one vent at the turn. I was told only one really must be attached(Air intake temp line) and other is not a big deal to vent to hood. I will look closer when I get my sled.
thanks for info

Did you also remove the plastic piece under the hood to allow hot air to escape out the stock intake ports?

Flip your hood over and take the 7 t25 torx screws out it’s obvious once you get your hood flipped over to see it and it really opens up those intake ports as vents. I can get pics if anyone needsMore detail on this piece. where is it?

Dan likes pics, movies, 3D how to's, prices of tools, where to get tools, graphs of proper torque for screws & the size of your underwear. I just need a pic...

The red outline is the piece you would discard, opening the 2 blue circles which are intake ports, free venting y not! And save some weight off of these things!

Isnt that where the air filter pulls air from the frog skins on top hood?
Are you saying remove all that AFTER you have a CAI?
