Thunder Products (Big Venom Viper kit) with Heavy Hitters

The viper is great sled right out of the box, but it seems to run out of steam past 70, my 15 ltx dx has 700 miles on it, I know its still breaking in, but I've only hit 88mph so far, I have ulmers intake and the 1.6 ice cobra track on it which I know doesn't help, is this normal, I looked at the clutches and it doesn't look like I have the casting flash issue, don't get me wrong I'm no speed demon or need to be the 1st one across the lake, just want this this to pull hard up to a hundo like my nytro did, hope this kit is the answer.

Viper will outrun Nytro if clutching is correct. Add air box mod and faster yet.
 

For sure, aftermarket clutch kit on mine alone would pull harder low-mid than a stock nytro and was always faster top end even with a big rider weight advantage to the nytro.
Anything that would make this clutch better, like aftermarket helix, primary spring, belt or osp belt adjuster.

All of the above lol, different kits have different characteristics but in most cases they all do very well to accomplish the same thing, smoother engagement, faster acceleration, better back shifting and if you're lucky you can maybe sqeauk out a bit more top end, just keep in mind that your top speed is mainly affected by 3 big factors, 1 being conditions, 2 being horsepower and 3 being the gearing and all 3 directly affect each other, a good clutch setup makes it so your sled runs close to its top potential consistently when the 3 big factors come in to play, consistently being the key word.

No problem M137....we are all here to help you.

A Helix is how soon the secondary reacts to power applied to the total clutching. The different angles can be used to apply more or less power to the track, along with backshift characteristics. Yamaha and others have been using a straight cut helix (43° straight on the Viper, Nytro and others). But, I don't want to confuse you more by saying the secondary spring and Primary clutching all have to work together in order to be usefull, use all of the engines hpr to perform and be efficient.

Let's just say you take your sled in stock form and change a helix to a different angle or multi-angle. The Viper has a 43° straight. If you purchase a 48/43 and install with the same spring and weight settings....you will have a steeper angle on take off that should help you with traction. It will shift much faster with a steeper start angle. Too steep of an angle and if you get a lot of traction will bog the engine or slip the belt. Shagman and I race asphalt and our track to be consistent....we need to get the best clutching where we use all of the engines power, not spin the track, put down some really fast numbers and because we race bracket class....we need to be consistent bewteen runs to win.

I was always told a multi-angle helix is a bandaid for poor clutching. (This is from Olav Aaen, the guy who wrote the book on clutching and I have talked about this with Lonn, the owner of Thunder Products many many times) This is why the stock 43° helix is used with his kit. Not only to save money on a bunch of aftermarket items, but to make the stock helix work using other aspects of the clutching.

The Big Venom kit from Thunder Products gives you all of the performance to rail the corners, pull the skies on demand (if suspension is setup correctly), get the holeshot racing your buddy's.....but more important, the kit gives you excellent low engagement which is critical for loading/unloading in or on a trailer, crossing a road (Like what happened to Dave_RX1's sleds), the ability to crawl on top of deep snow off-trail, pulling up to the gas pump nice and slow, not jumpy and better yet....increased fuel mileage. That is the best part of clutching when you can find a combination that will let you ride off-trail, blast down the trail or be smooth enough your kids or grand-kids can put around the yard with. That is when you know you have found the best setup ;)!

Hope I didn't bore you with all this info....I get carried away sometimes cause its a passion of mine to futs around with clutching and also a passion is to help all my friends get the best out of their sleds :)

This is a very interesting product. I love the low engagement RPM. Are the claims on the Thunder Products website reasonable? It is claiming that this kit does everything. Low RPM engagement, stronger low to mid-range to top end power, faster acceleration and more top end? Top end speed increased to 105 MPH, really. That seems like a lot for a clutch kit to do. Is this kit that good? I hope it is because I am ready to order one.

What is the adjustability of this kit? I assume it comes shipped for a stock Viper. I am looking at putting an intake and the Hindle Power kit from Hurricane Performance on it as well. About 20 hp increase. Will the clutch kit need adjustment? If so how and what to do?

The kit will come assembled to what you have done to your sled, your weight and your altitude. But, yes....the kit is fully adjustable (if and when needed), but it should almost be spot on when you get it.

Yes, more bottom end and mid-range pull with much more top end from stock. Basically the best of all worlds and something you didn't mention that I will here.....and that's better fuel economy :)

Best part, even if you don't plan on purchasing your mods right away, the kit can be adjusted to run on a stock Viper...all the way to a highly modded Viper (excluding turbo sleds, turbo sleds need a heavier base weight). The kit comes with different washers and bolts to let you adjust the primary weights to make your sled perform. Included is a manual that will teach you what to do and where to take away or add weight when needed :)

That sounds great. If you purchase directly off of the site I assume the set up is for a stock Viper? Should a person call and someone at Thunder Products and discuss the calibration of the kit for a different set-up? If so who should I contact?
 
Contact Lonn at Thunder Products and he will set you up and fully assemble the weights for you :)
 
Someone please send me some snow....I need to test and to get this video done so I can help you guys with adjustments of the weights (if need be)
