Thunder Products (Big Venom Viper kit) with Heavy Hitters

So does this kit use the stock belt or the 8DN. And does thunder products offer clutch machining in order to better use the 8DN or is it not really necessary.

That's the best part. With the spring change the coil bind is gone and you don't need to machine. Yes you can run the 8Dn. Just make sure to put 2 washers on each or the 3 bolts for the deflection adjustment.

8Dn is a better belt but the Gates (40C4340) 8Dn equivalent belt is also better than that. Per our testing.

Thanks for the reply Shagman. I was just asking because I thought that at one point Ulmer was machining the primary because the 8DN had a slightly different angle so I wondered if Thunder products thinks this was an unneeded step. Also, even though I have been using the 8DN for two seasons now because of reduced belt dust and more predictable clutch operation my computer technicians brain can't forget that the 8DN is slightly longer and the fact that my secondary has no bolts in it and I have no more adjustment. So I wonder if I am giving up something by not having the exact right size belt for the sled. That's all.

That's not good to run with no bolts unless you're running a belt deflection adjuster

I ran mine without bolts for most of last year. I really doesn't hurt anything but will wear the inside of the sheaves a little. I run an adjuster now just because I change belts often trying different setups with several belts. Your not giving up anything with 8Dn your gaining plus they are cheaper. Back in the day racing we used to set the center to center a little short to make sure we were using overdrive. Little longer belt on the viper seems to help it. It really helps if your primary is machined for overdrive but won't hurt if it's not.

so what is the weight of the clutch weight .its a heavy hitter but what is the weight .i have a set from my rx1 that i don't use ,maybe i just need to order the secondary spring and shims .thank you

The angle of clutches is same whether for 8DN or 8JP. Only thing you may be giving up running the 8dn is the final ratio. Doubt a 8JP will ever run to top and bottom of clutches unless Turbo. 8DN its pretty easy for it to use up the clutches which is why many are machining them. Benefits of 8DN or equivalents outweighs any negatives I think.

Anyone using this setup and how do you like it

I don't like it....I love it!!! LOL ;)

rx1 fern, I will have the guys who own the sleds that I have installed or will be installing the kit post their results. This is a new kit that Lonn at Thunder Products just put on the market, but with all the testing has been very successful.

The weights are 48 grams rx1 fern

Right now, I have 5 Viper owners living next to me and right down the road. From bone stock with 0 miles to full modded and Shagman's turbo...along with many others. I am going to report every sled that I know of and how they like the kit....but more important is how the sled will react from sleds with 0 miles to sleds that have many miles. You can also post here your own setups. That's the best part of this kit is how adjustable it is :)
Lonn is setting up the weights according to your style, weight and what is done to the sled. It's the fine tuning that I will report here (along with everyone elses input also) that we can all take note on and can fine tune the sled after miles are put on. :)

Is he using the 150/300 primary spring in this like the old kits?
