To Sc or turbo Vector

Throwing around the idea of either puttin a super charger or turbo on an 06 nytro. Lookin for the pro's and con's of both and also the reliability of these things for just trail riding. Thanks.
 

Thats exactly what got me thinking about it.....I seen that. My first thought was a nitrous kit,but i what something thats gonna be reliable and thats gonna last.
 
I have nitrous and its great if you just want to drag race across a lake, I will pretty much beat 80% of the mod sleds and mine is strictly a trail sled, its awesome for me. Does 105 across a lake off the bottle and 156 on!

However if the MCX is like mine on the bottle that would be awesome, its a rocket on the gas I think it would be; dare I say too much power for trail use. I better not say it :)
 
I've got an MPI SC on my 05 RX1, if I had it to do all over it would be a turbo sled.


WHY?

A supercharger works constantly, a turbo{like nitrous) works on demand, for a trail sled most of the time you don't need boost, when you do, the better turbo kits light(make boost) almost instantly(SCs are already lit). Bottom line- turbos are more efficient(make more power), don't work constantly(heating up everything on the intake side), and boost levels are easily adjusted. Either way, your bottle is never empty.


If you do a search on this subject, there is lots of stuff on here. This is just my observations after 2 seasons on a SC sled. Now if I can get Speed or AJ to let me trail ride their turbo sleds this year - I'll repost with a more educated opinion!
 
This is a raging debate and comes down to preferences. Ultimately I made my choice to go with a super charger for these reasons:

Ease of install - I can't say enough about the quality of the MPI system. I know there are high quality turbos out there too, but I did the install myself and perceived that it was more involved.

Ease of tuning - I concluded from my research (reading A LOT) that tuning the SC would be easier due to its linear power delivery.

Reliability - while the SC does not make as much horsepower, i concluded that it was more consistently reliable and predictable.

That said - I have questioned my decision many times!! It would be nice to have a few more ponies in some situations. It would be nice to have the adjustability of boost levels on the fly to compensate for availability of fuel.

On a final note - I added a Vortech valve this fall which should address the fuel economy at low/no boost throttle positions and will also address the low boost heat build up. I am no expert on the Vortech and have Ted Jannetty to thank for turning me on to it, but essentially it releases the SC boost pressure at low RPM and when the throttle is quickly released from load and is vaccuum actuated.

Boost is addictive and it seems you always want a little more - but I have been very happy with the SC!
 
If the majority of your riding is trail, go with the S/C HANDS DOWN.
If you are lake racing, turbo all the way. I have 05 RX-1 with MPI S/C and could not be any happier with 7 pound pully's at 200hp. This thing is a blast with the throttle response in the trails, and not to shabby in the long run's neither. Like I said, if you are looking to be the fastest on the lake go with the Turbo, but for ultimate fun factor in the trails, do the S/C.

05 RX-1, 7 POUND PULLIES @ 200HP, 92 OCTANE, and still gets better gas milage then my friend's 800MXZ REV, = PRICELESS ;)!
 
The last 2 posts share lots of good info. I went from a SC to a turbo and back to a SC for many reasons.
 
I set up a buds 05 Vector with a Simmons cpr turbo. The sled used stock head gasket, 8.5 pounds boost & pump premium fuel. What a sleeper & it pretty well cleaned house on anything it lined up against. Great gas mileage & no issues.
 
Simons CPR for trail riding. TurboJamie you've had some bad luck with that front mount from north of the border, as have others that try to use it for a flatland kit. Simons kit will turn you back to a front mount man. I've had at least one of every kit out there, including the supercharger, none of them are perfect with everything you desire. You need to pick the one that best suits your needs. Many things to consider, noise (rear mounts are noisy and are sickening to ride down the trail everyday), Front mount fuel capacity suffers along with increased underhood heat, supercharger uses more fuel, has narrower powerband and makes less of it. There is always something to be lost and gained. You can do a search and read till your head is spinning. Good luck with your decision.
 
I agree Mike haven't triend em all. I would never go front mount again after my fiascle without seeing in person another kit, installed on a sled, running that I could ride and see for myself the head/power diff. I would love to beleive though:D I agree the SC doesn't make the most HP in the world but for a trail sled that doesn't need it, that is a hard combo to beat.
 
For trail riding the turbo is probably the way to go. Better fuel mileage because you arent making as much boost constantly. I got the supercharger because i like instant boost, i dont need the most power, and i do a lot of slower riding not really through tight trees, but you need power when you hit the throttle.
 
My vote is a cpr turbo, especially with a vector! More power, adjustable boost, minimal heat issues if at all and will run with the big dogs. But, boost is boost, you will be happy either way.
 
2003 RX-1 with a MCXpress rear mount at 16 lbs running 93 octane US or 98 octane RON Europe, making 285 HP, milage 11-12 mpg or 2 litres pr 10 kms. I can cruise down the trail at 6000 rpms making 60 mph or 100+ kmt with boostlevel at 0 lbs, powerband on a turbo is sooooo broad. When giving it wot from a standstill or slow speed it starts building boost around 5000 rpms. I have the engagement set at 4500 rpms so throttle response is acceptable. One thing about the rear mounts is the noise level, it's high. MCX-press makes a muffler that fits the 136 and longer sleds, but it takes away some power and I do not like the looks of it. If I ever boost another sled it would be a front mount or a mid mount, would love to know how the throttle response would be on those turbo configurations. I find the turbo power very linear and smooth when out trail riding, and the top end power just awesome. I could always add some racefuel and go wild on boost, say 22 lbs, that would be crazy.

It all comes down to personal preferance. This site has tons of real life info to digest, do the reading and you will find all the pros and cons of each and every turbo or sc kits ever made. Happy reading.

Thanks for all the info guys...i actually live not to far from benders and also on of the guys that was head of the turbo stuff. So im gonna talk to them about em too. I like the MC Xpress but the noise is an issue around here so im kinda leaning towards the supercharger at this point.
