I'll throw my 5 cents in the kitty here as imo these octane recommendations are very subjective. I'll share what I know from experience.
Max 17 makes 17lbs of boost. Max Spool 17 also makes 17 lbs of boost, but spools up faster and a is a little quicker/stronger than Max 17. Max Spool Lean 17 is the strongest of the three and was designed to run at temps over 30F, hence the lean designation. Running this tune hard in colder temps with too low of an octane can create issues. As others can attest, driven like an old lady at easy speeds, Max Lean 17 will yield record breaking and heroic mpg figures.
If you plan to use stock fuel pump, here are my reccomendations: Can Max Spool 17 run on 91? Yes, if you are riding your mother on the back. Heres why .... the sticker on the pump says 91, but is it? Perhaps that seasonal gas station wants to move last years fuel before getting a fresh drop. Sometimes you never know.
Spirited trail riding maintaining speeds 90 - 100 mph with a few snaps into the 120s every now and then....you need 94-95 octane to be safe imo.
Now lets say you are a guy that wants to show his buddies who the big buck is in the deer yard. (I know someone like this) Let's say you are a monster buck that doesnt discriminate or show prejudice towards anyone who challenges you. Lets say you encounter a situation where a group of little spike horns line up ... and one after another they challenge you to a drag race, hoping to beat you and have their way with one of the does in your harem.
Let's say you are a monster buck that doesnt care to share any of his does. But,..... you are a fair monster buck, you are a monster buck that shows no prejudice in putting opponents in their proper hierarchy. Hence, you take on all challengers and run back to back to back long pulls of about a mile in length. One by one, you show the spike horns your rear flap. In this last scenario, I would be at 97-98 octane. If you upgraded to a higher volume fuel pump ($200), then you could get by on 95-96 octane.
CAVEAT: These are only MY opinions and they are based on my experience at sea level in cold temps. I run TD tunes, but I'm not affiliated with TD in any way and could not spot the owner, in a crowd of two. In my experience, when comparing comparable tunes, the TD tunes are the last to show knock and in my neck of the woods, they have a reputation for being the most reliable. Call TD and tell them the type of riding you do and you will have no issues.
When you call, I wouldn't mention monster bucks, spike horns and how you like does....
Those County Bucks need to be quicker to protect their harem, cause there is lot’s of nothing in between in that region with it’s unbelievable trail system/Buck trail.

Ya it’s awesome there. Do all my riding there.
20 plus years ago(1997 I believe), met a guy who was from the U.P. in Michigan. N. Aroostook had snow that late December, and his area did not ironically. He told his wife that he didn’t care how far he had to drive to find snow, he was going somewhere!?
He ended up in N. Maine. I was so in aww that he was from the U.P., so I asked him it must be awesome riding there....and he said, “it sure is, but this place is just as good!!!” He loved it in N. Maine, and he was so glad he made the 20 hour ride.
I’ll never forget that conversation.

The problem with Big Bucks is they only come out at night...............................................................or they die!
So you're saying FLEECMAN that if you run a big tune & don't watch your gas, you'll be killed by Steve.
OR, you can be this big buck & only come around my stand at NIGHT!

Maybe funny, but the FLEECMAN knows his gas. I've had many confusing conversations about it.
What he's saying is, certain tunes are good for X octane. Not all gas is THAT exact octane.
Throw in some serious lake racing & intake temps rising & that X octane tune starts to knock. Knocking is a safety mechanism, but i don't think you want it to happen a lot.
SOOOOO, i think what FLEECER is saying, if safety is your MAIN concern then go a step down on the tune.
They are ALL fast!

Turns out this SYNAPTIC fella rides my area and is only a couple miles up the street from me.
OH BOY!
Might have to ride with him & teach him the fundamentals of OCDness. Or torcher him with OCDness
It's good to have friends that own speed shops

Fact. Especially in the middle of nowhere, the gas isn't typically good. We got a tank last year that was labeled 93 and likely had more water than gasoline. Even the stock Viper I was riding with had issues with running crappy after that fill up.Maybe funny, but the FLEECMAN knows his gas. I've had many confusing conversations about it.

Heres another fact: You're treading through the woods and you come across a doe like the one in Clutchmaster's Avatar ...... who cares about octane!!!

Trail Boobs! Not to be confused with ones riding on the wrong side of the trail.

Octane......
Lots of things determine what your gonna need to prevent deto. There’s not a lot you can do to change your engines requirements without tearing it down, but there is something I feel is really overlooked here.
My experience with smaller turbos and higher boost pressures has been once you get into the inefficient area of the compressor map the turbo really starts to heat the air quickly.
Hot intake temps have a HUGE impact on knock.
The guys running a stock frame turbo on a Mitsubishi Evo (me at one point) found this to be true. Once boost pressure was over 20 psi with a smaller sized intercooler there was nothing left to be had. BUT if you put a really big intercooler on it, dropping the iats down we were able to run 26~28 psi on pump gas.
Another example is E85. It’s only 105 octane but many will tell you it’s more resistant to detonation than 112~114 octane gasoline. I know this is true. The reason being is E85 has four times the latent heat of vaporization. That means when it evaporates it pulls heat out of the surrounding air to do so, cooling it. Put some rubbing alcohol on your finger, you’ll see what I mean.
What I’m getting at is the addition of a larger intercooler and more airflow is a recipe for big reliable power, especially with the smaller turbo. Cold air intake helps too. Also colder air is more dense and will always make more power at identical boost levels, given the afr’s stay the same. Maximum power for gasoline is 13:1 afr, if your not getting any deto, then 12.5 is probably where you want to be with a bit of a safety margin.
Whatever you can do to increase airflow over your IC is great!
