I just picked up my Liquid Silver Vector ER about a week ago . When I got it home and really started checking it over I noticed that when the motor was running there is a knocking/rattle noise coming from the motor or clutch. If I had to guess I would say the clutch. Are you guys hearing the same noise? The dealer tells me that it is "perfectly normal". I know that it is alot quieter than I am used to but it has got me a little paranoid.

My Rage does it too. It seems to be clutch noise caused by a couple of things. First, the RS uses a very soft primary spring to get the low engagement (3600 on mine). If you grab the sliding half of the primary clutch (shut the engine off first), you can easily actually wiggle it back and forth a bit. These are normal tolerances. On other sleds, the spring is stronger and the clutch cannot rattle. Next, a four stroke is not very smooth torsionally at low revs. This is due to the wider spaced firings (compared to a triple 2-stroke) and the pulsing loads coming from the cam drive.
I assume the noise goes away when you rev it up. The lesson here? Always rev it up.

My Warrior clangs and bangs at idle but thought it was always the gear reduction. You have no gear reduction but the clutch is still noisy, interesting.

My Vector makes the same funny noise.. Then again the darn thing is so quiet that we may just notice the little noises??? MM.

The noise you're hearing is probably from the gap between the weights & the rollers in the clutch. With the engine off look at the weight and take a o-ring pick or look closely to see if there is a space between the ramp of the weight & the roller. The reason you hear it more is because the motor is sooo much quieter & smoother!

Srxspec is corect as to where the noise is coming from, The one i rode last winter did the same thing And my new one does the same thing to. Yamaha said they would like to quiet it down some but is very dificult to do due to the mutch stronger pulse of the four stroke. The RX is not as noticeable as the reduction reduces the pulse some and the four strokes are quieter. Don't worry they will last nearly forever.

My Rage does the same thing.

Vector Noise
My Vector makes the same noise. The second my dealer started it for me he said the noise is coming from the clutch, that is normal. With a 5 year warranty and a very good dealer, I'm not going to worry.

I think the rattling noise comes from the splined coupling on the crank.

There are nice sounds and there are bad sounds. The sound Yamaha clutches make at idle is a bad sound. The noise comes from the clearance between the weights and rollers. You can test this out yoursefl by taking the clucth off and give it a good shake in you hands. I got so tired hearing all the nice sounds my RX-1 makes being drowned out by the clatter of the clutch that I put a Polaris clutch on it. Much nicer now. BTW, I'm pretty sure the clutch is held on the crank by a taper fit not by splines. Splines are often used hold on the primary gear to the crank on motorcycles but not on snowmobiles.

You must have checked off an option box that I didn't because my Rage doesn't have any splines on the crankshaft.

I found the sound coming from my Rage at idle suspiciously reminiscent of a Cummins diesel.

I heard "noises" coming from my Rage as well. I thought it was coming from within the crankcase. After seeing a cutaway of the engine at the Big East Show last weekend I'm sure that's where it is coming from. On the left side of the engine you have a chain in there turning two camshafts and then another smaller chain turning what I figured to be either the oil pump, water pump, or both. I took my belt off and slowly turned my engine up to about 7000 rpm's. The sound went away soon after 4000 and it sounded pretty good after that. Can't wait to hear that with a helmet on!!

Try shiming the buttons on the spider to get rid of slop between the spider and the sliding sheave, It worked for me, end of noise.
I Ended up with one shim on one button on each arm. Meaning I shimmed only three buttons. Clearance is about 3-4 thousandths.
I've done this on several sleds over the years, I originally heard it from some mountain riders who do lots of clutching. If you go tighter make sure the spider doesn't bind inthe sheave.

Congratulaions! In that case you are the owner of a very special Rage...
The outer PTO end of an RS crankshaft is connected to the rest of the crank with splines. This short piece has two roller bearings. This is to avoid damage to the plane bearings caused by stress from the clutch. Thank you Yamaha!

Believe me: This is where most of the noise comes from. It pretty much disappears under load though.
