looking at the scope it looks like the voltage is dropping, otherwise it wouldnt look like a square wave. i may not see the pulsing in pic. with the digital scope, too slow. if its not, then the current draw is always the same, you are just changing the pulse speed. the higher the setting the faster it pulses. "pwm" pulse width modulation.

The voltage doesn't drop. I just didn't reset the zero point on the waveform for the second pic. But you can see that the displacement from off to on on the square wave is still 12V for both pics. Yes it is a PWM signal, the width (or time length) of the on/off changes with what you put the grip setting at. The time length of the on/off pulses is on the order of milliseconds.

Hi tork..

anychance we can get a new POLL as i spoke of above?....wouldnt that help yammie take notice at least?

thanks
dan

All electronic circuits are desgned around 2 things.
Amount of load x service life hours

You change load and then the amount of average hours the component will last HAS to change. No way around that!

Let say you did a poll. 100% of the guys say I have used the rewire for over 4 hours with no failure. Well that is hardly any insight as to the status of the ECU at 100 hours. I mean it is a clue, but no way conclusive.

We already know that the initial rewires have no initial failures.
To try and use a poll to force a big no worry green light on the rewire might not be a good thing with ECUs costing $623.
Balanced info is better, if people know all sides of the story, I mean we are all adults and it is a free country, then each can make a choice that suits them best

I just called a Yamaha rep and he indicated that he would be back in touch with me after he spoke with Yamaha techs and my dealer. I think I am going to try the 06/07 mod and keep the setting low until we hear further. I am sick of cold hands and gauntlets! :exc:

I did the math simple ohms law.
v=ir
i=e/r

06 grips- 2.2 ohms- in series 4.4 ohms- in parrallel 1.1 ohm
07 grips -6 ohms- in parallel 3 ohms

12 v / 3 ohms is 4 amps- 07 bars wired with 07 harness( parallel)
4 amps
12v / 4.4 ohms is 2.72727 amps- original 06 bars hooked in series
2.72727
12v/ 1.1 ohm is 10.9 amps- 06 bars hooked up in parallel

so you will go from a draw of 4 amps to 10.9 amps, the system can handle up to 40 amps total at the same time. otherwise the main fuse would not be 40a.

looked in the book for fuses and found this

main fuse 40a
fuel injection system 10a
headlight 20a
signal fuse 10a
dc term.(aux) 3a
ignition 20a
back up 3a
fan 4a
ecs( electronic controlled shock) 10a

spare fuses 20a, 10a, 4a, 3a

cant say there is a dedicated fuse for the grips but i would think it is wired to one of them.
but it looks to me that the system can take every bit of 40a and we only want 11. so with your high beam on, shield plugged in, backing up out of the bar ,your grips on and adjusting your shock you could pull around 40 amps. how often are you doing all of that at once. the system is designed for a 40 amp draw, you will never use all of that at one time, you would have to have every option turned on and adjust the shock, while starting the sled, in reverse. not going to happen.

yes 10 is greater then 3 or 4 amps, but with the headlight drawing the most while running up to 20a, i cant see it beeing an issue asking for 10.
do you know how much current it takes to start that sled, a lot more then you will ever pull from the system at any given time running.

done with this.

called yamaha, they say because i have an 07 i need to go the dealer first to have them "check" it. so i will put the o7 bars back on for that, then when they say they dont see anything wrong i will put the 06 bars back on.
and call back, and tell them my dealer says its fine.

ON THE 07'S (WARRANTY) THEY HAVE THEY'RE PROTOCOL...MAKE SURE YOU LODGE YOUR COMPLAINTS WITH THE DEALERS...

ON THE 06'S...GUY'S ...DONT LET THEM KNOCK YOU AROUND...TELL THEM YOU DONT NEED TO GO TO YOUR DEALER...IT'S NOT THAT THE BARS ARENT WORKING...THEY ARE'NT A ADEQUATE FIX!

THE RETROFIT IS INCREMENTALLY BETTER BUT JUST DOESNT CUT IT...BE NICE BUT FIRM...I'VE HAD DEALINGS WITH CUST SERVICE BEFORE AND HAVE GOTTEN RESULTS...I REALLY BELIEVE WE WILL GET SOMEWHERE HERE GUYS...AS MUCH AS IT IS APPRECIATED WHAT DAN HAS COME UP WITH ...WHY SHOULD HE...ANY OF YOU OR I HAVE TO CHANCE IT ON KNEW OR ALMOST NEW 10 GRAND MACHINES?

i SAID TO THE CUST SERVICE PERSON..
"YOU KNOW...THERE ARE CARS OUT THERE NOT PRICED FAR FROM THESE MACHINES...AND IF THEIR HEAT DIDNT WORK PROPERLY...IT WOULD BE HANDLED IN DUE DISPATCH REGARDLESS OF THE MANUFACTURER" SHE SAID WELL MAYBE THE NEW BARS ARE DEFECTIVE IN LIMITED NUMBERS..
....THERE ARE NOT A FEW BUT HUNDREDS...MAYBE THOUSANDS OF GUYS DISATISFIED WITH THE RETROFIT...NOT TO MENTION TH NEW 07' SLEDS....

HER RESPONSE....WE NEED THEM TO CALL TO KNOW THEY ARE DISATISFIED...

I ALSO STATED IT'S NOT THE MONEY...i EVEN SAID IF IT WAS ME...AND YAMAHA SAID...HERE'S ANOTHER PART...SAY A NEW HARNESS...ENGINEERED PROPERLY AND IT COSTS SOME MORE...i'D GLADLY PAY...

so let's start some other posts and get everone calling in numbers !

Problem today is nobody wants to be accountable. I have the same problem going on right now with Toyota. I have a failed system with my remote locks and security system in my Tundra and they don't know if it's covered by the warranty. What good is the warranty if it doesn't cover failures? It's getting to be like insurance companies. They gladly take your premiums but when it comes time to pay a claim, it's denied.

When dan posted the fix, was a matter of a few hours there was a Yamaha Bulletin hot off the press.
I called my dealer on this fix at that time. Page 16 of this thread. except it has disapeared.
My dealer stated that wiring in parallel work but the ecu may be affected by to high current draw, so a resistor should take care of this or keep on lower setting.
he also stated He did not here of a Yamaha bulletin, in fact checked it out and could not find one. and today?none.
So here we are a few days later same thing dif day.

I called YAMAHA and talked to Chanell in customer service. They are not aware of a handwarmer issue. LOL But she would kindly let engineering know.
I explained about a $10,000 sled and No warmers, wheels or slides. She told engineering as they are not aware. LOL
I was polite with her and asked if she would be happy in this situatioin? I can't answer that sir. LOL
I asked her they being Yamaha had of the parrallel 06 bar fix? She would let engineering know. LOL

So there you have it, hot off the press, No handwarmer problems, or idler wheel problems, etc
Only us on TY.
I suggested that Yamaha engineers go to TY and they can see the fix that they can't do? She said she will pass that on to engineering.

So there you have it. Thanks Dan, lets put this thread to bed, until the 08's come with good warmers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RTX-That's a crock! I talked to the same customer service rep, Chanell just yesterday, and she did acknowledge the fact that there is a problem. My complaint was that I had a standing order for the updated bars and harness with my dealer and then my dealer gets a letter from Yamaha stating that they are no longer available. WTF? Chanell said and I qoute, " if you had contacted us sooner we would have seen that you received a kit." I told her I did not know there was a shortage of the kits and assumed all along the part would come in. "I'm sorry sir, but you'll have to wait until fall of '07 after they make more during the off season." Great! Some customer service.

I was told that i should have called sooner. I said I told my dealer, isn;t that enough? When she told me she would let engineerong know about the warmers? She also stated that it has not been a problem as far as she was aware.
They are aware now?think?
also more bars are coming, I was on the list since last year. Good Luck

just called my dealer to set up service so they can check the grips.
he said dont worry about it. call me back with the vin and i will put it in the system that we checked it.
he asked if they were getting warm at all. i said depends on your definition. he said its fine, that is the way it is.
sounds like some of the dealers are in the know and are trying to help.
it doesnt get enough watts when its cold. i also think they know about what we are doing, just from his response.
keep up the calls, and we'll get this fixed!!!

he also said call back yamaha after he gets it in the system.

yes guys....bottom line is keep up the calls!....I did my part earlier today...be firm, and make sure you tell them we BOUGHT and PAID for these bars which SHOULD have a 1 yr warrantee like any other parts....and they are FAULTY!

maybe we will see something, like a proper harness with resistor for 06 BARS.

Dan

Out of this entire thread the best information I have seen to date is to contact Yamaha Customer Service!!!!

Hey Dan saw the bulletin today i love the first sentence THE GENUISES ON THE INTERNET HAVE FOUND AWAT TO ........... LOL too funny anyway they put in bold letters they will NOT BE COVERING CLAIMS TO COMPUTERS WITH MODDED HANDLEBAR WARMERS the last sentence though has me concerned they still claim there is nothing wrong with handlebar warmers and if the customer is complaining they are to bring it to dealer and have power checked to bars if they are still not satisfied i cant remeber them excact wording but along the lines of too bad soo sad LOL yikes
Maybe, they should test the handwarmers in the cold weather before releasing them to production, then none of this poop would be said and we would not have a 19 page post on TY. I can't believe they are not thinking there is a problem, but I guess we will follow the correct protocol and start reporting it to the dealers again. I want it fixed by Yamaha. So, all 06 AND 07 Owners, if you have complaints about your warmers, log it with your dealers now. They said there was not a problem last year rememeber.

That would have been me.....

These kinds of issues and the extent that some take with all the bickering and complaining and not going thru the right channels, is enough to make me want to shut the place down...

I see why Rob at HCS sold out!!
