We have a yxz engine apart right now to put rods into. The new rods are .080 shorter and the big end is .020 wider and uses the same rod bearing. The piston compression distance is .080 longer.without using a rockwell hardness tester, we can feel the difference in hardness with a file. Its hard to mark the old rod and the file marks the new rod beam with ease
Do you have new rods already? Who is making it?
And i have run 16 500km with afr at 12-12.5 ! The same as many others around here. Why run so rich as 11??

For what its worth here is the Dyno print out from my 2016 Yamaha LTX SE with Dealer installed MPI about 2 weeks ago. The great news was I read on TY that the controller might be bad, and told my dealer prior to dyno. I had dealer also install AFR and Boost gauge. They verified very quickly when you boost jumped to 8 lbs. and shut down quickly. My EBAC had to be disconnected (dealer called MPI directly).
As I understand it...and believe me I'm new to this boost game, with no EBAC there wont be any boost compensation for altitude. We were at 900 ft elevation (if I recall). The first dyno pull was 171 HP with boost showing just above 4 lbs (manual gauge). Adjusted wastegate (maybe 1 turn don't quote me....I know it was adjusted at least one turn total) and 2nd pull was 175 I believe. Re adjusted boost to ~5 lbs (not over) we saw 181 HP.
Waiting for direction on what to do long term with EBAC, hopefully replacement will be mailed to dealer than to me for replacement. I feel sorry for anyone who picked up there MPI dealer installed Viper and hasn't been notified to unhook 9and doesn't read TY).....
Net is that I chose a dealer (3+ hrs away ...and I have two Yamaha dealers within 20 miles of where I live) that owns a dyno and is very performance oriented, cause when it comes to HP claims with snowmobiles and snowmobile go fast parts, I've spent $1000's and went slower.
Its funny how I haven't even ridden the sled (coming off a 2014 800 ETec) and I'm thinking 181 isn't enough! It better get around my Etec or I'm gonna be eating much crow around the cabin this year!
AFR numbers were 11.5 - 11.7 if I remember correctly

BTW watching your own sled on a dyno is somewhat intimidating.....but I can check that off the bucket list! Framed the Printout and it hangs in my man cave !

I can tell ya 9#'s and no ETEC on the planet can catch you. Now I am trying 20#'s to see how many times I can lap them

1. thanks again dave for all of your info and testing
2. who is making the rods for you?
3. are you expecting this "new" motor to create any more hp vs the old motor with the same boost.
4. are you seeing any other weak points in the new motor.

The new engine will be the same HP as the old one .We cheated with adding rods to the YXZ engine.I used a NYTRO crank and Crower rods for Nytro with the YXZ pistons. That moved the piston up the cylinder .080" so we added head gasket to reset the piston-head clearance. We wouldn't need to headgasket for the Viper because the bore is the same as the Nytro. We have a bunch of sets of Carrillo rods coming in the second week of January

hopefully yamaha fixes this. it will deter many away from a turbo if they need to do motor work for a 190 kit. or everyone might as well get the 240 kits.

If you're opening it up you might as well go to 300+.hopefully yamaha fixes this. it will deter many away from a turbo if they need to do motor work for a 190 kit. or everyone might as well get the 240 kits.

Has anybody heard or seen any information from Yamaha about these new rods, and if there will be any action from their side??
Or is it not an issue for them as they will hold ( Maybe?) the 130Hp that is original for the viper.

Nothing.

I predict the answer will be "too bad too sad they are adequate for the performance levels intended"
My first ever Yamaha purchase was my Viper. I selected the "blue Arctic Cat" because Yamaha showed me a loaded up machine with special shocks etc. They then delivered something other that what they showed and gave me the "too bad too sad specs subject to change" BS.
No I don't bleed blue and never will...

Gotta wonder what effect this will have on the whole sled program. Everyone thought this engine was to be Turbo replacement for Cat engine. Dont think that will go over well with the power levels those guys are used to. Sad.

What an embarrassment. There is a reason everyone in TRF has been pissed off for a couple of years at least. Pathetic.....
