What Are the BIG Guys Doing???

I am 295 before gear and am still waiting for the stiff spring for my GT. I had my dealer call Yamaha to see how much longer. They told him that the GT spring should be at the warehouse on 11/30. I hope my dealer gets it soon after that.

If you have the mono suspension #7 and anything over 230 won't be enough. Rode the stock spring and I am 230 and it's no where near where you need to be. Order the fat spring or move up the clip.

I go 240 before gear, I have installed the stiffer spring on my new sled. I have also measured the the spring sag as per the update seminar. I have the stiffer spring on clip 2 cam on postion 2, that this setting I have 40 mm of sag with out my helmet and tank bag.

I believe anyone over 225 will need the stiffer spring to be the proper ride out of the mono shock skid.

SledderSteve,

mrrestless, Whats the best way to change the spring clip on these monos?

To get the correct ride height on Kayaba shocks you may have to raise the pre-load cam clip from #1 to #2. To acieve this you need to remove the shock and have access to the Yamaha spring compression tool (YS 43906). I don't recommend messing around with a press or other fabricated tools, you could be hurt.
Note: pre-load will get you the right ride-height but it doesn't increase the spring rate.
Start testing with the 40-45mm sag setting. If you experience excessive bottoming you will need the stiffer spring. Most guys over 250 riding hard, will benefit from a higher spring rate but it comes down to personal requirements, this is all 'ball-park' stuff.

If you want or need to change the cir clip on the rear shock. A set of spring compressors will work.
It can be done with the shock on the sled. I did mine and it took me about 15 minutes.
I go 250 right now and I do not carry lots of stuff with me. I set the cir clip on the second notch and the adjuster is on the 7th.
I will wait to see how that works.
If you are going to the first Muni ride I will have tools with me to do the spring
;)!

i weigh about 225 but my father weighs about 150-160. He owns the sled(Apex GT) but i will be riding it a good amount of time when he is at work or doesnt feel up to riding, do you thing we should get the stiffer spring??

You guys should be fine with the stock spring as you're just a "wee lad" compared to the rest of us, how shall I say, more "substantial" characters.

Never mind that the "owner" of the sled's weight is right in the sweet spot of the stock spring.

Go ahead and wrench up the preload to 5 1/2 inches (max) when you go ridng but be sure to reset it when you're done. The machine was delivered with the proper wrenches to do the job and a laminated sheet to show you how to do it.

While you're at it, make sure the gas tank is full as well.

(Says the guy with a fleet of Yamahas who only wishes his wife and children would be so respectful.)

I'm 150 soaking wet and really don't want to be reading in these forums about you big :? NAKED :ORC etc guys Yuck...Keep your clothes on PLEASE... ;)! :tg:
