Alright lads, I'm sure somebody here has changed the infamous starter idler gear. I have removed the POS starter and can feel a few teeth missing. What's the best and easiest way to get to it? THe manual is not the best, a few pics if anyone knows would be much appreciated. Since the night my sled stranded me we've have about six feet of fresh and it's killing me. THANKS IN ADVANCE, BIG NOLSY.

Oh and I'm going to order the thicker upgraded one any thoughts or reviews?
Look up my Sidewinder Flywheel install thread. It's same process but you will have to get pieces out of pan. Don't turn the motor over at all to avoid trashing the stator and flywheel.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I've actually read that thread already I feel like if there's something to read on the starter issue I've seen it a few times. I have my new starter but I have to get those damn teeth out, I just got the reflash, little too late. Maybe I got a bad batch with the shitty magnets who knows but I've isolated the cause at least. Do you know if it's wOrth getting a better one way and starter idler? ( which has to be replaced anyways.) Thanks again really solid.
I left my old starter gear in because I didn't want to chance a new one failing and the OneWay you can tell if it's bad by wear and if the spring around the Pawls has any kinks in it. All that was fine on mine. When Sidecover is off you will have access to the pan to fish for parts and then decide if you want to go with pulling motor or pan or just fishing. Season is short so it a call only you can make. I would not blame you at all for just fishing parts out and going riding.Thank you very much for the quick reply. I went through this last year...I bought an aftermarket starter at Royal as everywhere else I looked was back ordered...Royal starter was cheapest and is still cranking. I bought my puller at Princess Auto and did everything myself...because it was my second starter in a year and I was out of warrantee (Yamaha replaced first not second) my dealer came through with new gear and seal. Think I did the job in a day...take lots of pictures!! Hardest thing I remember was getting case back on with new seal...magnets are strong and don't want to line up. I had a lot of stuff to move...I have a turbo so you probably don't have as much stuff to take off.

@cannondale27 my starter idler gear is chewed up though which will stipulated my new starter anyways right so I should replace that asap? Or can I get away with three teeth missing so I can go for a few good rips before being able to work in warmth haha. Thanks for suggestion i,plan on using a flexy stick with small magnet I don't thing any pieces have gone through. Everything is a process on theses fuckers so much stuff jammed in there have a big set of mitts on me which makes is even tougher.
@upei93 great pics, did you get the newer beefier starter idler gear? To get inside there you have to drain coolant no? Any thing else or tips is there a weird harmonizing tool I need or something? Thanks for sharing this forum has a,ready saved me two grand this year I should have joined earlier.

You need one of these pullers

Drained oil not coolant...like I said take lots of pictures! Dealer gave the gear and can’t remember if it was beefier.

I dropped the oil pan in the chassis and fished a small magnet on a stick and caught all the pieces in my engine. I later pulled the engine when an aftermarket stator fried and was happy to verify that I had gotten all the pieces out the first time!
Yes the gear MUST be replaced if chipped. Only option you have is engine removal for dis assembly to ensure all pieces are found and all damage repaired. Many don’t do that and take their chances.@cannondale27 my starter idler gear is chewed up though which will stipulated my new starter anyways right so I should replace that asap? @cannondale27 yeah IL do that if every piece can't be accounted for for sure, thanks brother.

I finally got a puller borrowed from brother in law, all torx screws came off not prolem except the lack locktite one holy #*$&@ what a whore. I have to cut a relief strip into it with a dremel today just brutal.
@blueironranger is it easy to drop the pan? It sounds easy but e erything is so compact that I can't assume any hing at this point I have hardly had any turn of any tool that hasn't taken way longer than it should. I've missed the best riding season in years at least I have a 95 Indy running well. I ALSO havnt found any tip on using that puller everything is just showing trucks' brake rotors and #*$&@ any tips are welcome. THANKS BROTHER
