7800mi Service 16 Jackshaft upgrade and Driver/Shaft change 2017 Shaft/Bearing info

You could be right. there is different part # for same gear
9000 Sprocket - 21T (15 Wide) 1702-490
7000 Sprocket - 21T (13 Wide) 1702-410

seams like the 9000 gear is wider, so bushing would be wider?
I don't think so. Hub should be same width since 17 Viper uses same shaft as Sidewinder but with 14 wide chain and gears. Will get one ordered tomorrow to confirm.

That top gear bushing I believe is the cause for most of the chain case problems. It is kind of weird system, it seems that a small amount of contact on those small teeth are responsible for the whole system working in forward. The bushing wears and compromises that contact area. It then can pop out of forward gear.
Mine failed at 5600 miles ( chain too tight for %90 of those miles---my bad) I added some Lucas oil conditioner to the oil last time I replaced the gear. I figured it cant hurt. I will check it again when I change tracks this year.
Any Update on this Stain? Starting to see many Winders with no wear at all on the bushing. Could 15 Wide chain be the reason? No more wobble bearing? or oil?

Funny you posted this. I was just thinking about this yesterday. My Viper has been on the back burner lately with my Sidewinder purchase but I do plan on taking the chaincase apart before the year starts. I currently have @2800 miles on that new top gear so it will be the right time for a bushing check. I will report back when I take it apart.

I read through this whole thing and am still not getting it of why to update to the new shaft? I have descent mileage on my viper and am going to pull it apart to check it out. Why not just replace the bearing?

Why because its cheap and bearing is pressed on and its clips instead of locking collar and others have had bad old shafts new ones are stronger.

Okay, reading into this. By upgrading you delete the wobble bearing on the upper gear in the chain case?

What all is needed? 17 shaft and a new bushing? 2 new bearings?

We believe so. 17 has proven itself but just stated coming out when we all started converting to 16. So no one I know has done 17 conversion yet. It comes as assembly also with jackshaft bearing and frame member installed but you can get all separate. Go for it. That would be best. Shaft is probably same as 16. No wobblebearing and no locking tapered collar.

I'm gonna be tearing mine apart relatives shortly, I guess I'll take a look at it and make my judgement then, and take a look at some parts fiches

I have a 15 and from what I gathered here the 16 seems like a real decent option for install and go route. Lots of guys running them great results bye bye wobble bearing

Im gona install a 4206 on my viper xtx le 2016 now when i change track, gona go with sidewinder top gear and chain to.
