I understand what your trying to get to. The Nytro isn't for everyone. I don't know what kind of riding you do, but maybe a vector or a apex would suit you better if you normally stick to groomed trails? That might be a easier way out for you if you don't want to put anymore money into your Nytro. I had a XTX and loved it...the best mod I ever did was adding Hygears sport package and a set of Curve XS ski's. Was a completely different snowmobile. Then you can really appreciate what a great snowmobile they are.

I am new to the Nytro and it is awesome! I don't care what negative things you say about it as I have had 2 stokes all my life and switched to the Nytro this year. I was tired of having to tow or be towed up in the UP. The 4 strokes were always the sleds that kept running. I have put over 700 miles so far and could not be happier! I ride aggressive in the woods and occasionally do some ditch banging. I must be the one with the good luck - so far...........
I guess the way that I look at this sled or any other for that matter is that these things are snowmobiles, not cars. We're not out riding $90k BMW M5's, we're riding on 10k+/- snowmobiles and beating the heck out of them for the most part.
Nothing is going to be perfect for everyone. The way that I look at it is for me, is that I ride the sled, figure out its quirks and learn to adapt to it.
If the track makes noise, then I know that is normal and not freak out when I start to hear it. If the clutch is loud, then I know it's working properly, etc.
Reverse lever, for me, I couldn't be happier with it. I came off of an 05 Summit and the great handle bar mounted reverse button is great, until you're stand up riding, hit a bump and get thrown into the handle bars and your body engages reverse and someone is following you. Now THAT is fun! I'll take a somewhat picky reverse lever over getting thrown into reverse when you don't want to any day.
Life's too short to look for perfection in anything, you'll never find it. Everyone came to the Nytro from another sled. Certainly we didn't switch because our old sleds were perfect and we were sick of perfection
Ride it, tweak it, adapt to it, enjoy it!

I love my XTX! This is the first official sled I have ever owned but I have been on a few others to compare. I love the forward riding stand up capability! I love to mess around in ditches and fields etc. I just got finished a 300 km ride on hard pack trails. The others I was riding with were on Rotax 440's and a Yamaha Professional. At the end they were sore! I mean whining about every muscle possible. I loved that I banged around, went through unmanned trails and came out happy! They stuck to their groomed trails while I explored the bush! I got stuck a few times and they had to help me out, but they would never consider the sh** I went through!
I am very happy with the XTX!

I can certainly understand what you are saying. Just over 1500 miles on mine and I have dumped it pretty hard twice. Lucky for me it did not kill me to fix it. The weight you can feel on this sled and it is hard to really correct it once you are in the air and awkward. Hence the second hard dump and a few separated ribs.
I have a set of curves on mine and the steering was a bear in the beginning but after some adjustments, less air in the fronts and a rear strap adjustment of one notch as well as dialing in the compression in the back it and towing it out a 1/4 inch the sled steers remarkably better and feels much lighter.
I really have not had a great deal of issues with the ice build up. Living in NY and having two poor winters hasent allowed me to really have that problem. As well as dealing with the cold. I put the dumbo ears on and man does it make a difference. I havent had the issues with noise either and now that it is starting to get broke in I really enjoy hearing it wind out.
Half my family rides Doo's and the other rides BIG BLUE. Will a Doo be easier to ride and feel lighter...absolutely. My sister has a gade 600 SDI. awesome sled, light and easy to ride but the problems they have with engines and making sure they replace the top end every 3-4 K miles I would take the reliability of YAMAHA any day. I absolutely love the pull of my NYTRO and the abilty to handle some super knarly stuff. I think it will take me another year to get the sled dialed in but the engine just makes me smile all day. good luck

I think the answer is to take an F1000 or something like that for a drive and you would love to see your Nytro again.

I hear ya...It takes alot of time and unfortunately some money to get these sleds the way you want but in the end you can make them rock.
I've got over $1500 of mods on mine and I'm nuts on for handling almost there on HP/top end and have worked almost all the bugs out. Every sled has bugs...

track noise is terrible on the trail, humming at high speeds.
tunnel iceing is almost embarassing, and could be dangerous, and also contributes to the track noise.
frozen knees riding in -28C,
frozen fingers despite yamaheater which by the way is a huge improvement
little storage
handling, darting is terrible,im almost sure its because of the weight over the skiis. (running 144 studs with 6 in. carbide)
heavy steering sore shoulders
skiis too narrow sink in a little powder
sub-frames bending
reverse handle is awkward and cumbersome
the weight of this sled is noticeable, contrary to what i have read in the magazines before i bought it. To me im scared to take it off a beaten path.
Some of those problems could be fixed with some suspensions tweeking and different skis. Skis are obvious, everybody knows they have sucked for years. After skis, shims and Bergstrom carbides, my RTX doesnt dart at all.
I have very easy steering. Get ski savers for your carbides, probably 3/8" ones from Scott B. Then you can take some pressure off your skis, sounds like you have too much right now anyway.
I always figured the reverse handle was there for a reason. If it stuck out any further, your knee would know it.
I still don't get how people get cold fingers. Was -10F for the majority of our ride yesterday and I never got cold. There has been times I didn't even use my gauntlets, just some thing gloves that cut the wind.
Ice build up is a problem for sure. I check mine whenever we stop and kick it off. The tunnel protectors seem to make the problem worse. I'll be installing an 1/2 tunnel block off this summer.
Frozen knees? Its not just a Yamaha problem. All the manufacturers are putting very little shields on the sleds. The trail performance ones anyway. I ride with 2 guys that ride Poos and one guy litterally froze his balls off yesterday. So bad that he stuck his extra hat down his pants. I'll take cold knees over that anyday.
Just so you know, the handling problems you are having, I had too. I was ready to trade it in after 500 miles. I have the same amount of studs you have, down the middle.
My cure was :
Slydog Race skis
Bergstrom Triple Points , 8"
3/8" ski savers
3/8" shim under rear of rubber
@58 psi on my Fox Floats
Now the sled handles very well. My buddies that ride the Poos still beat me in the twisty woods but as soon as I get the inside ski lift problem remedied, that will change. Sounds like I need to get adjustable blocks.
Everybody I know that rides a different sled still puts $$$ into them to get them to handle how they like. The Nytro just needs a little more work.
PS: The Nytro is not a lazy mans sled for sure. If your flying through the twisties, you NEED to be forward and lean. Can't just sit upright and zip through them.

A few improvements to help.
I put USI X2 Triple Threat skis on my XTX and what a huge improvement. Everyone knows Yamaha stock skis suck. I also put the tunnel enclosure kit on from Schmidt Brothers and it reduces the ice build up to nearly nothing. As for the frozen knees and hands, that is typical of riding a Nytro, but a pair of gauntlets helps tremendously. Hope this helps and enjoy.
