Another starter

Just a note guys. The Yamaha shop here replaced several starters here last year. Only 2 on vipers and 1 was mine that i did myself. All the rest were on Vectors, Ventures, and Nytros. Their replacement have been all forms of failure (magnets, broken nose on starter, broken gear.) from all models. This is by far not only a viper problem but a 1049 engine problem no matter which sled its in. I know a guy with a venture that replaces 2 per winter since new (2012). If you ask them they will say the vipers arent that bad because they havent replaced very in them yet. I think the reason this has been seen so much on the vipers is that there are a lot more out there then the others. I'm sure that there are other factors with the vipers but the problem was here before they were even built. That all being said and looking back if I new all of this I would still have purchsed a viper after riding one because they rock. Ride it until it breaks, fix it and ride again. No worries.

What he said X2. Who has forgotten the Yamaha starters that had loose screws and the housing would turn causing bad starts and eventual failure? I would hate to tell you how many Yamaha watercraft starters I fixed when helping a local dealer a few years back.

I will X3 that with exception of the 16 motors. There is a difference between a rod and a starter or even the gear. I cannot tell anyone to buy a 16 late build till we know more. The starter thing is worth taking chance on.

My dealer got my XTX put back together and just in time for the last TY ride. Hats of to T&R Yamaha in Michigan, you guys are awesome. ;)!
Here's some pictures of whats left of the old starter and parts.

Broken magnets!! I believe this is where it all started. After the magnets broke the stater still worked and it always started but it sounded weak, kind of like starting with weak battery but the battery was fine. I started getting lots of kick backs about 3-4 weeks ago and prior to that never had one.

Hard to say what went first. In this case I am guessing the nose broke first. Is intermediate gear good yet?

On another related issue. This is second hand and I will get a better explanation but supposedly the motors have the relucter pressed onto the crank now instead of on flywheel like in past. Was one sled that after about 1500mi the reluctor moved causing kickbacks, poor performance and hard starting. The reluctor is the teeth that the pickup coil senses engine position, rpm etc. Any insight into this?
