My engine bay is dirty, not from oil but from belt dust, some dirt residue (got stuck and a track with studs yanked me out but could not get hooked up until he was down into the dirt), etc. I want to give everything a good cleaning but I have never been able to spray the engine compartment. Will the silicone spray (keeping away from the clutches) do a good enough job? Any suggestions?
I also noticed some small spots of rust on the black part of the frame where the headlight pod is bolted to but closer to the front of the sled... Should I sand it now and throw some good paint on it?

Your best bet to really clean it is to take the airbox out, battery tray, preety much everything involved in an oil change includingthe bottom side panels that come off with phillips head screws, and just clean everywhere with damp rags. You could even use some water out of a low pressure hose too once you have everything apart and your sure nothing will get effected by the spraying.
For the paint, mine did the same thing too. I just took a little sandpaper to it, then tremclad rust paint (spray), then once that dried, put electrical tape on the contact spot to keep more rubbing from occuring.

WD40-soaked rags remove belt dust, grease, etc. Spray some on a rag then wipe the surfaces you want to clean. Simple Green or any other degreaser works well, too. Spray it on, let it soak for a few seconds & gently rinse w/water. Then blow dry w/compressed air. Removing the clutches gives good acces to the left side of the machine. Simple Green also works well for cleaning the heat exchangers & inside of the tunnel.

If I rinse it down with the hose should I have the sled running? Anything to worry about? I have never been able to get myself to wash the engine with a hose.

I probably should have clarified. The only time I use the hose is if I've sprayed degreaser in the belly pan under the engine. Like yourself, I'm not fond of dousing engines w/hoses either. I use a very small amount of low pressure water only to gently rinse out the likewise small amount of degreaser I spray under the engine. I then use compressed air to blow this dry. 99% of my detailing the engine bay is done by wiping all surfaces I can reach w/rags soaked w/WD40.
