Apex clutch on Sidewinder

Back on point......anyone seeing lower top speeds using Apex clutch? Knapp and others?

No. They have the same amount of OD and travel as a winder primary.
Are the early apex clutches the same as the later ones? Since i had to machine
.060" off the split collar and. 030 off each face to get the belt up high, before that it was a dog

Good question that I can't answer. I don't have a newer one here. I'm using and old RX-1 primary and my bud is using an old Apex primary and ours go to the same dia. as the Winder primary do.

The fixed sheave is the same from 03 RX-1 right up through at least 2015
The sliding sheave started in 03 also but the part number changes up starting with the 06 Apex and that carries through to at least 2015. I even have the 2006 technical update book in front of me and I can't find any mention of what is different about the sliding sheave. I don't think much.
The clutch cover is the same that was first used on SRX 700(8DF)

Good to hear. Trail ride for 120 miles with Apex clutch and all was good. Rattle goes away once you get rolling along and I did get on local river to the tune of about 1000 ft or so and recorded 120 mph gps. Will go play on another river to the tune of about 2100 ft and see how it goes.

IN your opinion, why wouldn't Yamaha consider using the same primary in the apex as the sidewinder right from the start? Or at least revert to that in 2021-2022? There has to be a reason they went this way or it must be a huge oversight on their part.

IMO the Winder primary was designed to carry more HP and be a quieter primary. The RX-1 primary on my winder is much louder than the Winder primary. They need to redesign it however.

If I was going to purchase a primary to replace it the TAPP would be the one to have, but I just happened to have the RX-1 primary on the shelf so decided to try it. Its amazing to me how the rollers are surviving in it compared to the Winder primary, same with my buddy running the Apex primary. The weird part is I have some friends having great success with the Winder primary and stock rollers.

Update: Trail rode to bigger river yesterday with what I consider my trail clutching for corner to corner fun. Ran about 2000ft at 127 gps over reving at 9300 rpms. More than happy! Btw Mr. Knapp, you’re correct, no loss in top speed with Apex clutch!

The difference for mine was just under 1mm. FYI
Put my apex clutch on today to thunders new weight and had to remove my one shim behind the secondary to get 59mm. With the stock sidewinder one i needed the shim to get 59mm.

Interesting..... I have not remeasured since I put Apex clutch on but I will now!

True, I've done that, but only felt one hole was necessary. I remember seeing a prostock Vmax4 of Iantomassi with the hood open at a race which only used the set screws to hold the weights and rollers in place - no bolts at all!
Less rotating weight :dunno:
