Apex Exhaust Gutting w/ Pics

Hey yamadogger thanks for the info.I followed your directions to the letter and just completed mine today and all I can say is wow Im glad I did'nt blow the money on an aftermarket set-up as this sounds AWESOME,I am totally impressed with it and can't wait for the snow to fly.

ps the sound clip does'nt do this justice it sounds much better in person thanks again.

I have heard it both ways losing power and gaining power. I will be gutting mine this weekend. I plan to leave the large pipes that everyone is cutting out and cutting out the small crossover pipes that lead to the outside chambers. This way it is still taking the same path as the factory set up but with a little less restriction. FYI my brother in law cut out the large pipes last year and put them back in this summer. It sounded great at WOT but did drone at lower speeds.

Has any one dyno'd this mod to see if it helps or hurts hp numbers as asked above? I am thinking of doing this mod myself but would like to know if it takes any power away or not. Thanks, Gene.
:4STroke:

I have been waiting for an answer to this as well :o| :o|

Sorry, no HP info

Sorry guys, no info on power gain or loss but any changes in either direction would have to be minimal. I did talk to Jeff Simon (Simon's CPR) before I did the mod to see if he had any advice. He never did any testing on what I did but his thoughts were you wouldn't lose any HP. He also said not to expect much in the gains department either. I was mainly looking for a better sound without spending a bunch of money on aftermarket. I know it's a ways off but if we don't have any answers by winter my wife has an Apex without the exhaust mod that I can run against for a very unscientific comparison. I have a friend about the same size as me who would be happy to flog on her sled for a while. If someone has any HP numbers I would also be interested, however.

Have you compared the two?? I would love to hear the difference, maybe run the stock Apex then run your's with modded muffler behind it.

For sale, gutted exhaust. It cost me 200 to replace the gutted one. Not looking for 200 but at least 100 + shipping. Look at it this way you can do whatever you whant to it with out worrying about finding a stock one.

Gutted Exhaust - After 1 Season

Well, after 1 season with the gutted exhaust I can say I am completely satisfied and also glad I didn't pony up the ching for an aftermarket exhaust. I've received many compliments on the sound and it really is not too loud by any standards. Several have PM'd me asking if it got rid of the "drone". It doesn't but it kind of masks it with a nice exhaust note. I had a chance to ride my wife's completely stock Apex for 2 days this past weekend and, although it too is an awesome sled, I was wanting my gutted exhaust back. It really makes the sled sound like you would think it should have sounded from the factory - very sport bikish. As far as performance here's what I can say. My buddy has a fairly fast 2001 SRX. Against my wife's basically stock Apex (me riding) we're dead even, race after race. Against mine (same day back-to-back) we're even to about 60 and then I walk away. Obviously very unscientific testing because I have no idea how mine vs. my wife's compared stock (she's not much of a racer). Mine is all stock with the exception of the gutted exhaust and the CR10EK plugs. So, take that for what it's worth I guess.

This is 6th season with gutted muffler and would be lost with out it ! :-o It sure is addicting!!!

Just throwing this out there...

I havent made a new thread on this yet, but will soon, when I have some free time. But I ran a bender exhaust, until it broke in half, and I had to race the next day. So I ran my sled with only the y-pipes and it was stupid loud.

Did a run with the straight pipes, then put the stock exhaust back on, and actually got a slightly higher mph in 2000' than with the y-pipes only.

Sp preety much said, no back pressure compared to more resulted in slightly better performance.
