I did the 144" zx2 and Ulmer recommended the 22T, so that is what I did. I havent tried this out yet so I couldnt tell you the difference.

Yes there is a difference down low going from a 23 to a 22 top gear. Yes you can use a 70 link chain with a 23 top gear. Going with a 22T you will have to change the chain to a 68 link chain.

I used to have an 04 warrior. Any Idea what gearing it had?

Lammy,
22/38 require 68 link chain but 23/40 you can keep the 70 link chain if you want lower gearing. Both gearing ratio are equal.
I have try teem all gearing with mod on my sing,i got 1 MPH lees with 23/40 vs 23/38.
23/38...116 MPH radar
23/40...114-115 MPH radar
My 23/40 is faster 98% of the time vs 23/38.
23/38 is faster on ice,can go up to 119 MPH
23/40 is faster on snow
I love my 23/40 gearing.

22/38 uses a 68 link chain. 23/40 uses a 70 link chain.
All 2006 models came with a 70 link chain 121 models 24/38 and 136 models 23/38. From 2007 on up the Apex RTX models use a 22/38 gearing with a 68 link chain. All other Apex 121 models use 24/38 gearing and Apex/Attak 136 models use 23/38 gearing both with 70 link chains.

Didn't I read somewhere that if the price didn't matter, it was better to change the bottom to a bigger gear than to drop the upper gear? Something about the easier rotation of the chain. Just wondering. I had a 40 tooth bottom on my '06 Apex ER, I now have an '07 GT and was debating on installing it on that. I know the 40 hurt my mileage slightly on the ER, (higher rpm's). I had a pioneer roller setup on it, as well as on my current sled. Any thoughts out there? Should I do it? Need to outrun 6 Ski Doo Etecs in my group.

In theory yes it give you a straighter chain, but on snow i dint see the difference between 23/38 and 24/40.I bought the 40 tooth bottom so i can play with difference gear ratio and keep the 70 link chain.
Just get the ratio that you need to get the job done.My 02 cent

hook a boat anchor up to the back of your sled, and should still be able to outrun an ETech. LOL!
