Any sled can be made consistant. The closer you get to running on the edge (getting the most out of your sled) the tougher it gets and requires more attention to detail. Turbos can (and do) work very well. I don't think many noticed the boosted apex running 9.5s in the bracket class.

Corey, was that Keith Wood's supercharged Apex with a 9.49 on the dial-in board?

Yep.
lakercr said:I think the turbo sleds can be very consistant in the right hands. I've been out to the track quite a few times with Don, and he is very methodical about his setup and changes. He might do one or two suspension or clutch changes in the early part of the day, but by about noon, the set-up is the set-up, and that is how it runs for the day. You wouldn't want to use us as a reference point for racing turbos on the asphalt just yet - we took a sled that is very fast on top end (in the winter) and and put a best guess setup in it for our first trip out. We spent all of our time getting it converted over to run on tar, and didn't give the obvious things much attention before we went to the track. Don, on the other hand, runs every two weeks, and has been for a few years now. I don't remember the last time (if ever) that his week-end was cut short from a mechanical failure. He is down into the low 9.6's now, and still has lots left in his sled. He is only running about 10,200 rpm on the big end, and most of the time runs on low boost because he is more consistant that way. I think with some clutching and suspension tweaks, he should see low 9's before the end of the year.
Jim, I’m pretty happy with what I got out of it this weekend, if I can put a 9.5 on the board this year I’ll be very happy, and all it will take is a good tail wind. Most of the time we get head winds at that track. Some more tweaking on the skid and a little clutching should also do it. Hey I’ll trade you a few secrets in order to get mine running like yours did on the snow this winter, but then I think you know what you got to do. Hey 9.99 is pretty good considering it was your first time out this year and the problem you had with a simple exhaust clamp. All this tuning takes time and sometimes you go backwards because of problems. One of my goals this year as always is to make it to the podium!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and by the way, I don’t think they will let you guys run trophy again at those speeds, someone was mentioning to me that one of the cars running on Saturday got bumped up into Sportsman because of his low 11 et’s. If you just want to make some runs, you can save yourself some cash and just ask if you can test & tune, if there isn’t that many cars out you will get lots of runs. Long weekends are usually a different story though, there are lots of cars.

Yeah, we already got the heads-up on switching classes. We'll be with you next time out. I think the mounting bracket has been hurting you 60' for a while now, so now that it is fixed (don't forget to do the other side) you should be able to tweak the skid a bit more. I'll bring a scale out the next time you run and we can deal with the rpm as well. Are you going to be taking the sled south with you Friday? If you're planning to you can run it by the shop on your way out and I'll do that welding for you.

Yep the plan is to take it south, and I'll be picking up bolts for the other side. I'll probably be out of the peg before late afternoon, so I don't know if we could get that welding done. I hope to get the rpms dealt with by mid August, as I don't think I'll have time to work on it before the Aug long weekend. Are you off Friday Jim?

Finally set aside a few minutes to get back on here.
Had a good time as ESTA this year. We have a great bunch on guys on this site, and it was good to see some old faces along with some new ones.
Once again, thanks for bringing the track Corey. Wayne, it was good to finally meet you. Ernie, your Apex rocks... and thanks to you and your guys for getting the final 20 degrees on my secondary. It was a crutch... but it worked.
Went on to finish 4th runner up, so was in the money. I had been focusing on getting my lights consistent for ESTA's LED tree, which is something I don't normally run... and for the most part was successful (Sunday's lights were .5309, .5421, .5571, .5561, .5421, .4891). Unfortunately I am not sure what went wrong on my last light.... chalk it up to driver error. It was getting dark and I just picked it up too early. Sled went on to run a 10.78 @ 114.7 that day, and although it was a good run, I was disappointed based on an earlier & quicker TT at Cayuga. The track was sticky and my 60ft times showed it (1.3980, 1.3889, 1.4179, 1.3779, 1.4010, 1.3899)... so no excuses there. BTW... the slower 60fts both came in the right lane.
As special thanks to Allen Ulmer who helped get me going with the RX1 on asphalt a couple of years back... and continues to be a source of information and inspiration. There are a lot of great talents on the site, and he is a class act.
Hopefully might get see you in Martin this year. Already have some clutching and suspension changes planned in search of that 10.6.... or elusive first 10.5 run!
PS
Corey... please slow that thing down just a little... I need to make it to the fall air... lol

Went out to NYIRP for the make-up on their bike/sled shootout. Got 7 runs in before eliminations. The track was really inconsistant without any cars there. I finally got to try my secondary that takes cat helixes. To compare, I ran my usual setup (good for 10.6-7s) and ran 11.10 @ 116 with a terrible 1.8 60'. My next run taking a shot with the setup on the new secondary was a 11.08 @ 117 with a 1.82 60' and only 9500 rpms. Lots of spinning, but a good start on the clutch. Best 60' I could manage was a 1.50 and that run ended with a 10.82 @ 116.
I did have one run with a 10.96 @ 116. That alone is a little slow, but it was with a 1.70 60'. If I had been down around my usual mid 1.4s that could have been a 10.4 run.
I'll be taking a little time off now. Hopefully in a couple weeks I'll be back with a new nos setup and I want to try and build a new suspension too.

Hi Monker! Just got home from those races around 9:30 tonight. I was up there w/my two daughters, an uncle, and my friend Jimmy (the guy w/the red baseball hat that chewed your ear for a while). We had fun for the most part, but I didn't get to meet you because my 8 year old got the squirts a couple times and I missed a few races here and there. When he said you had something w/totallyamaha written on it, I figured I'd find you and here somewhere. I was pretty impressed w/the times there, since I never got to see sled drags on asphalt in real life I had a pretty good time. A friend of mine who has a banshee like me has his dialed in a little better than me right now, and he is pulling a 10.65 at 116.4mph, but the last time I ran mine in the 1/4 mile I was only at 13.0 at 93. My last motor was quicker but I never got to run the 1/4 with that setup. I am putting another motor setup in right now to try, but my buddy in the 10s will probably never have to worry about me. I'm jealous of you 10 second guys. The quickest I ever hit in the 1/4 was on my v-max at 11.76 at 116, and now my v65 is only at 11.9s. Still fun, but maybe some day I'll see 10s. If you are going to any other asphault drags, let me know. I'd like to say hi in person. I'm working on getting an apex (just for trail riding), and I think my friend Jimmy is also, but we just haven't yet. PM me next time you plan on running somewhere and I'll try to make it out again. 2 1/2 hours drive isn't too bad. Talk to you later! Marc.

Sounds like that was Wayne you were talking to. He has the TY hat and runs his Apex. I've got the RX1. I'll let you know next time I'm headed out there though. Probably two weeks or so.

Marc,
Are you the guys from Erie, PA? If so, that was me that was talking to Jimmy. He said he was thinking about going 4 stroke this winter. I told him to get on this site and talk to some guys. There are a lot of guys on here that know a lot of stuff about Yamahas and sleds in General. We'll be racing up there again soon. They have the races every weekend. We also go up for test n tune's on Friday nites. That's a pretty good time.

Yep, that's us from Erie. If they have another bike/sled shootout, let me know, and I'll try to make it up there w/some more friends. I am hoping to get the banshee running and work out any bugs, and maybe even try and dyno tune it by this weekend if all goes well, (but usually doesn't!). Thompson's Drag Raceway in Ohio has a grudge night on Wednessday nights when you can run anything including the bikes against the 4-wheelers and sleds, but didn't see any sleds out there yet. My friend Jim is going up w/a buddies pro-street Camaro he just bought (but not actually streetable anymore). Hope to see how well it runs. I doubt I'll be running the banshee that soon though at the strip. Very addictive. I'll see you in the future! Nice sharp sled by the way! Marc.

Finally got to the track last night (only 3rd time out this year) and ran the sled with whole new setup. Trying a solid skid and new clutching setup. Basically starting over… Pulling into the track it was 85deg outside with a lot of guys talking about how bad the air was, and I didn’t stop sweating the whole night. Off the trailer clutching was ok running coming out at 9800 and pulling to 10,500, but spun really bad 1.650 - 60ft then pulling 11.149 @ 114.88mph. Made 2 more runs and got it down to 10.79 @ 116.15mph. Made some clutching changes and got the sled down to a 10.72 @ 117.32mph. It was getting late and the track was getting bad because of the humidity/dew settling in on the track, so we packed it up and went home.
Feel like there is a little more there in the skid. Was told that I was still spinning a little, and would like to try some more clutching adjustments. Sled should be in the 10.6’s next time out…
Best run:
60’ - 1.504
330’ – 4.238
660’ – 6.652 @ 99.92mph
1000’ – 8.824
¼ - 10.720 @ 117.32
Also… Hit a small dear last night, just caught the side of the trailer… seen it at the last second, but didn’t have much time to react. Ripped off the wheel cover. Guess it’s an open wheel trailer now… he, he…
