This has nothing to do with any snowmobile in spesific. I just thought it should be made aware of. The other day a local fellow was coming home from ice fishing. He hit a ridge that was made from a plow that had plowed a road on the lake to a mining camp. He was tossed off of the sled and landed on his back. He was wearing a backpack. I don't know what was in the backpack but the end results were both shoulder blades broken, several ribs, and a broken back. He is in for some serious healing time. This may have been a freak accident but it can happen. This type of accident can happen anywhere, on a trail or on a lake and I just want you to realize this kind of stuff happens. We all think that "IT" won't happen to us. but I'll bet the people that "IT" does happen to thought the same thing.
Be safe out there guys but have fun.

Was he wearing a techvest? My bro is the designated backpack guy for us but he always has the techvest on underneath.

My backpack is on the tunnel. I found one with a leather bottom so the exhaust doesn't melt it!

I once went over the bars and had a ski come up between my jacket and the pack. The sled drove me a few feet into the local flora and pinned me under 20" of new snow. That was fun.

A tether switch is a good idea.

I have a teckvest coming in the mail (and a tether). My bro finally convinced me to get one just like he did 10 years ago when he got me to start wearing a helmet. Before that I was wearing a fur hat and goggles. I miss the open air feel but its no fun getting a handlebar upper cut.

Wow, I have to say that you guys on this site have class. I put this same post on a couple of other sled forums and all I am getting is flack and cheap shots about how stupid of post it was and how lots of people wear packs and never get hurt, yada yada yada........
One guy got the point that I was trying to make though and thanked me for the post.
The point that I was trying to make was to make other sledders aware of someones misfortune and hopefuly learn something from it so that a situation like this doesn't happen again. I have no idea if the pack caused the injury or prevented a more serious injury. That wasn't the point. I just wanted to help.
Thank you for listening

I agree this site rocks!! I believe alot of accidents could be prevented with Proper safety gear. Although it may be my racing background but I NEVER trail ride without a Tek-vest to me I feel naked without it. I know its saved me so many times the get offs at 60-90 MPH hurt can't imagine without the vest....

Tek vest knee/shin pads and helmet are always good ideas on the trail

I wear a backpack.( saw-water-xtra goggles-gloves-hat-food ).and go over the bars often. :o| .lol..wear gear for my back and chest..and knee pads too..It takes a long time to heal when you get old..lol..I have hit the bars many times and have had my sled flip on me and roll over me..doesnt hurt. :tg: .when you wear the gear ;)! .you get use to wearring it.dont need to be a fool..to be cool..Thank you dear for the gear..lol..

Seems like alot of people out ther have back and chest protectors for every day sledding. To be honest I didn't realize that, but maybe it's something to look into. It may verry well have saved this guy some pain and suffering. In my area people just get on their snowmobile suit, helmet and go riding. Thanks for the info on the protectors guys.

Good post  Good site ;)!
Wish the guy a speedy recovery. Even the best of us make mistakes. The very best learn from them. The greatest of us learn to expect the unexpected.

LOL, I got drawn into some childish crap on the other forum too. I was legitimately trying to help a guy out, and got nothing but harassment out of this one character who never even offered any help to the question at hand, just to attack me from behind his keyboard. I even provided all my logic behind my statement, but he couldnt focus on what I was trying to say.

Its happened several times, and I just quit going there. Everything I need is here, on THIS forum. Here, the members have much more maturity than other sites. Whether it stems form paying more for a yamaha, the age of the members, or just the fact that they are the type of people you like to talk to on the trails or at the stops.

I am happy to pay the minor fee to help contribute to this site, regardless of the VIP status. That part doesnt matter to me, but this site is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom from young to older, who treat people the way that they would like in return.

I thought your post was a good one, anything can and will happen, just like I rolled my sled over while I swear I was in slow motion but helpless against the 800lbs, lol.

crash

I had a crash last night...I jumped a small river and when i got the other side I couldn't stop and plowed into my buddies nytro...My chest and left side pounded into the gps, mountain bar and the little pad that says apex.....I am hurting alot today...Can't breath deeply or stretch...I think I may look into a vest.
