Boost but no go!


I've never really understood teh whole inches of mercury thing. Is 10" a lot of suction?

The reason I questioned wether it would work or not is that at just over 2000 rpm I am showing positive pressure. So, I figured that at 1200 to 1300 rpm for an idle that there would not be enough vacuum to truely show a leak that might only reveal itself at 5+ lbs of boost.

It's almost exactly the amount of suction you need to pull the mercury up 10 inches in a manometer... :tg:

It's enough to empty a coke can, not enough to clean the shop floor with.

Is it enough vacuum to actually show a leak that would be present at 5+lbs of boost? ie is 10" of vacuum as strongs as 5 PSI of force?

I have not used carb cleaner etc to check for leaks because I figured the leak may not be there at that low of vacuum. The other thing to consider is that the tees going to the float bowls are one of the most important spots to check for leaks and I don't beleive those ever have a vacuum do they?

Powder did you have a chance to try bigger jets today?
 
I think you are correct thet the t's should not have vacuum , however it would be a good idea to eliminate the possibility of intercooler to carb and carb to boot leaks.Sometimes its hard to see the bottom side of the boots to see if they are leaking. This would be a good thing to quickly eliminate and get out of the way as a possible problem.
 
Have any of you adjusted your fuiel pressure? Mine was at 8lb Terry at Bender said turn down to 5 or 5.5 and I had to turn the adjustor about out about 5 turns to bring it down adjustor was almost all the way in. Is that normal?
 
8lbs at idle is WAY to much. As long as you adjust it where Terry told you to you will be fine. The regulator is supposed to be setup in a way that alwasy keeps your fuel pressure a couple of pounds higher than what the boost is at that particular moment.

Another thing to check is to make sure you aren't kinking any hoses when you are installing your airbox. My fuel line moved once and everytime I put on my airbox it would kink it. It took me an entire day of working to figure that one out and I only found it by luck.
 
Too much fuel pressure at idle doesn't hurt anything unless it is to the point that it overcomes the needle & seat and floods the engine ...........
unless I am underestimating how much extra pressure the boost from the engine adds to the pressure , I left both of mine where they were when shipped .................I would rather have too much fuel pressure than not enough .
 
Do what Terry advised. Your Fuel Pressure Regulator has a 1:1 ratio under boost. Assuming the plumbing is correct, you will always maintain your base pressure above boost.

ex. base fuel press. = 5lbs + 8lbs boost = 13lbs net fuel pressue.
 
Check out "Bender Turbo in the Mountains" in the Mountain Forum. Spray and I really helped out Hyrup. You should read that post because alot of people jumped in and gave very good information for turbo owners.
 
Try bigger mains- Mac is now recommending 150 mains with a 100 pitot as a starting point. It should be a little rich at this setting....

Now I have tried all the way up to 150 mains and fuiel mixture guage still showes lean of the guage. But machine is ritch. I think the o2 sencer is a lier. Terry from Bender said forget guage put 700 back in tube with the 150 mains. Did that and acts good on the test snow. Will try tomorrow on good snow down south got 35' over 3 foot base last 48 hr.
 
POWDER1 - I have a friend with 195 mains and and a 260 pitot jet- his O2 guage shows just slightly lean. Don't be afraid to jet up....
