Clutch rattle.... DRIVING ME NUTS

Big Y has known about the rattle since the first Vector rolled off the line in 2005. It's due to play in the stub shaft to crank shaft fit. I think it's there on purpose but that's never been reported as official. Lot's of people have tried to take up the slack with various industrial glues and products and the fix is always temporary. I agree with Shagnos - get ear plugs.

Since you speak of the 2005 ..
Out of the box.....
-no rattle for 3 to 4000 miles, right !
-play on the weight pin is there, right !
Only move to the 2005 we found to quiet it out was to repack the sliders with shims (beer cans, whatever) has hard as your fingers allows it. Then good to go again.
To go this route you need to open the clutch. I always had a second standby unit, ready to go.
But that's the 2005. The stub unit was updated in 2008 i believe which might add good or bad to the whole thing.

Yep, the spline clearance is intentional. The crankshaft is mounted in babbit bearings, which by design require a certain amount of clearance and end play. Usually it's around .0005" to .001". The stub shaft is mounted on two large ball bearings which essentially has near zero clearance and end play. With the two components being supported by different types of bearings, there has to be some clearance between the two for independent movement, otherwise crankshaft breakage could occur.

Yamaha uses a stub shaft supported by two large ball bearings in order to handle the side load/torque from the belt drive. With the stub shaft handling the belt side load, it allows the engineers to build a lighter crankshaft for a more responsive free reving engine.

My buddy bought a brand new 2018 winder and after a few miles pulled over and said "what the hell is this racket". It is horrible. We also tried orings on the roller bolts but it didn't fix it. It clatters and rattles like a diesel when riding it at slow to moderate speed. My wife owned an 05 rage and a 12 vector and they never did this. My old warrior would rattle at idle only and my 14 apex is silent. I will not be buying one because of this. My buddy is quite disappointed as well. I just don't understand how this wasn't noticed and fixed in testing.

To be honest, I thought this would bother the heck out of me when I got my 18 RTX. But it doesn’t bother me st all surprisingly. I call it my lil diesel..kind of like it lol. And I’m a maticulous s.o.b.

You’ll get used to it and won’t hear it much after a while.

Best way to try and diagnose where the noise comes from is to tear clutch down and add one thing at a time until you hear the clack. I would even go as far as removing spider and movable sheath and just starting with the non movable on the crank shaft as that will have nothing all to rattle as it’s a solid piece. If it still rattles, then you know it’s the splines on the snub shaft. If not then add spider and movable sheath but no weights, pins, rollers or spacers and see if the the movable sheath and spider puck clack. If not then add rollers and test then lastly the weights and that would give you the best idea.

One thing I did notice was how bad the roller pins and bolts dig into the spider. Like some I was adding shims and orings and it was still beating out the spider so I took the pins and machined them down so they are just a C hair below flush of the spider and added an extra wide washer on the bolt to make contact on the outside of the groove the bolt was making and tightened it so neither the pin or bolt can move leaving just a little room between the roller and nylon spacers so the roller isn’t bound up and will still roll as intended. Didn’t quiet the clutch at all but shouldn’t beat on the spider anymore. One time I found one of the nuts backing off the roller bolt so I got lucky there and caught it before I lost the whole thing inside the pan.

A friend has a zr9000. I fired it up today and couldn't believe how nice this 998 turbo engine sounds without that rattling clutch! Someone mentioned lifter noise and other valve train clatter... there is NONE of that when you are listening to this motor with a rattle-less clutch. Almost, just almost, want to ride a Cat just to lose the rattle!

I have been trying to find solid state relays to match the pin layout for my buddy....no luck yet.

Let's not forget some of the machines blowing belts while others don't. Hurricane had a post recently about the secondary clutch offset off on some. Also saw a machinist guy showing his photos on a FB thread trimming a few thousands off the back of the clutch to allow more spacer shims for proper float and offset. The owner shouldn't have to fix stuff like that.
I have heard that Polaris relays will work. Also they are solid state. Look in to this and let us know.

thx

We now have 2 'Winders in our group. I honestly only notice it at idle. The other guy hasn't noticed a thing yet. I'm waiting for him or anybody to mention it.
Our 850 friend commented how QUIET my motor was & he was really impressed with that.
When i rode his 850, it was a very disappointing noise. Kind of a rattling, buzzing, gonna explode soon type of a wimpy sound.

If you hear the rattle past idle; SOMETHING ELSE IS WRONG!

Or you have very sensitive ears that can be fixed with noise reduction head phones & Audiosoave...

I pretty much have fix the issue mine is nice and quiet now I’ll take a picture and post it later today It’s really a simple fix

2018 Btx SE

Does anyone else get super agitated with the clutch rattle in this thing.... I'm in love with sled But damn!

I have looked into it and it appears the 2018 "update" included longer spacers and loose rollers in primary, I assume this is intentional to rattle rollers and keep them rolling

But I can't stand this rattle... most prevalent at idle - mid throttle range while riding, Yami dealer said I could have the spacers shaved down so the bolt can be seated against clutch vs. loose and rattling but this may effect the rollers im not sure

Anyone fixed this issue.... I've tried rubber o-rings and such with nothing working yet!

Polaris has shims available that you could install behind the spider buttons. Don't shim too tight, but it is the only fix I know of.

If you are not buying this sled because of this noise then you are missing out. Its not a big deal. I have had 4 of these motors and it is is being WAY OVERBLOWN. It causes NO HARM or WEAR. Get used to it. Enjoy the sled.

My buddy has a tune and a muffler so obviously you do not hear it at all....:)
