Running Dalton dyta-1 with 2nd lightest set screw roughly 75.5 grams total with a 41/35 helix and updated blk/org dalton secondary spring set at 70 degrees. Running TD Max Spool 17 I'm seeing 8700 to 8750 max rpms. Ran Max Spool 20 with some Boostane and never experienced any knock nor any warning light from knock. Mostly run Max Spool 17 so I'm thinking I want a couple hundred rpms thinking of also wrapping my secondary to 80 degrees also. Running the pink primary spring from Ulmers kit. How will wrapping to 80 on the secondary effect everything? I know it'll raise my rpms how much roughly? Thanks Mark
Side note trails up in the Ft Kent area this weekend were very good some rough stuff at times but given the school vacation week and the extra traffic you can't complain. Alot and I mean alot of snow. 400 plus miles in 2 full days of riding. Sunday managed 70 plus miles in 2 or so hours of riding. They have at least 4 ft on the ground and got another foot or so last night. If you have never been or have a chance to go you owe it to yourself to experience the County. Ride safe everyone

That Ulmer primary spring is very soft. I think 30/90kg . I have one. Use a higher rate spring with something that finishes up at 125-135kg. It should gain you some rpm. Wrapping the secondary will also gain some rpm.

Always tune sled with primary to get your RPMs, secondary is for your shift. You lose a lot by tuning rpms with secondary.

Yes wrapping secondary to 80 will increase rpm by 25-50 rpm.

Maxspool 17 setup: Your Ulmer primary sping initial rate is too soft, especially with that 41/35.

I would put Dalton blk/green primary with 74.3 gram weights and run 41/35 wrapped to 80 degrees or put original primary spring if in a pinch.

What do you have to lose, try changing the secondary to 80. You may like it but you won’t find 200 rpms that way, my guess is 50-100 more but that will be all the way through, so more rpm for same speed as 70.
As others have stated, less primary weight, stiffer primary spring or helix change.

Yes I have been all over the county, and shall be up there again soon.

We use to do the Presidents Day vacation thing, because the whole family was into sledding. 4 place trailer and sled fill ups hurt a bit back then, at twice a day for the family on sleds. “ But Those were the days my friend!”

Now ride with just bud or two, so we skip that week because of the amount of sleds on trails. Even if they groom every day, some still get rough.

Here to April up there is a hoot. Trails are just perfect and the crowds simmer down. Last trip from last April was something you dream about. Perfect trails with very few riding. Cool mornings and warm days make for fast mornings and comfortable afternoons. I was told that Caribou grooms almost every day, I agreed after that trip. Trails from Shin pond to Fort Kent were spectacular!! I could go on and on....

your primary spring is to light , try black/blue from dalton will give u 3400 engagement and 9000 rpm wot , or black/green 4000rpm engagement and 9000rpm wot , the rest of your set up is fine

I hope to make another trip up there in the next few weeks. As you said can't beat the County this time of year. I also know the pain of filling up 4 sleds twice a day then meals and all the other associated stuff. Now it's only my son and me. Alot more fun since he's one hell of a rider. He's got my old sled a 2011 Apex SE and it's a runner. I have a Dalton blk/blue and a blk/green primary spring I think I'll try. Sure do love the amazing pull of the TD Max Spool 17 and 20. I've also found that the Boostane stuff is the real deal. Added about 8 ozs to a tank of 93 and made some pulls on trail 105 and it just pulls and pulls real hard. Managed 122 on GPS and was climbing fast just not enough room and snow was on the loose side.

Thanks everyone for the help

I agree, run a Dalton Blk/Blue or a Blk/Green primary spring. The final rate for shift out is close to the same. The preload is higher on the Blk/Grn so that will raise your takeoff rpm. I run the Blk/Blue in my Hurricane stock muffler bundle.

The thing I have noticed......isn't the TD Max Spool 17 is supposed to be 285 HP if I recall? It seems the posts I read they are not pulling the weight what Hurricane's 270 pulls. My buddy with the 270 Hurricane also runs Dalton weights and he is pulling around 77 grams. Mine is set to 240 and I am pulling 74.5 grams. Another friend is running a 300 Hurricane and he's pulling well over 80 grams. This is all with Dalton clutch parts. There are other variables with springs, cams, spring twist...etc. but I keep reading the same stuff. Not trying to get into a pissing match, just being observant. Usually physics doesn't lie.

Good points here. TD Max 17 is 285 hp with race muffler. SQ muffler is probably closer to 275-280. Weight size is dependent on springs, helix etc, but another crucial variable is secondary rollers. I know a guy who was running Hurricane 290 tune and spinning 82 gram weights. Went to torlon rollers in secondary and had to drop to 74 gram weights.

Had another friend running Hurricane 270 tune. Shop set it up with 78 gram weights and sled would only pull 8400 rpm. Dropped weights to 73 gram and ran like a scalded dog!!

I can run 80 gram weights....but its slower! I dont want to go slower, I want to go faster. Course, depends what you are doing. Running 1000ft on ice may run better with heavy weights however, running mile after mile of wot on rr beds really pushes the limits of the intercooler/clutches and everything else. Thus, light weights are better..imo.

To each their own.

Hurricane 270 with 83.5 g weight. Torlon rollers.

These sleds are all over the board as far as clutching goes. Total weight depends on so many variables, power output is just one of the variables.

Talking with Mike K. last week he tried a different set of rollers and suddenly his clutching was out in left field. Yes lots of variables........
