Clutching on the cheap

Ok stingray, I finally got back out on my sled. Before I made adjustments I got another 400 miles on my sled, now it's tapping the rev limiter up top. I took out one shim (now at 3mm) and dialed secondary to 3-3. Just went for a rip, on an icy road pulled 100 mph but still tapping limiter. I have 3.6 grams in the tip. I'm guessing I should bump that up a little? Motor is totally stock, cotc, secondary helix shimmed .072" (all I could find) and an 8dn. 144 studs. Oh ya, '15 LTX-DX. Thanks.

Will a 4.5g weight be too much? By the way, I now have 1000 miles on, so I'm thinking I'm pretty much broke in as good as she's gonna get.

no problem ....go with 4.5 g

A couple weeks back I was here:

Well, I almost got mine dialed in. I've got about 800 miles on it.
14 rtx unstudded, 8dn belt
8fp weights, 4.5 in tip, 2.44 in center
Gwg spring with 4 shims
46/40 helix
Wrap is at 6-1
Awesome everywhere, but max speed is 97, banging the rev limiter somewhere above 90.
Do you think 3-3 will get me off the limiter, or should I throw 1 or 2 more grams at the weights?

So, I went ahead and moved to 3-3. Didn't like it at all - lost my fast backshift and ability to spin the track at 40-50 when punching it. Also, it only pulled about 8700 rpm at 87MPH. Did a mega 220 mile ride like that.

So today (now with 1100 miles) I went ahead and wrapped the secondary back to 6-1. Now, I'm bouncing the rev limiter when taking off hard from a dead stop. Rolling into the throttle I'm not hitting it down low, and I didn't have room or visibility tonight to test beyond 85mph (it was still pulling and not hitting limiter there).I did get that mid-range wow factor back that I missed at 3-3, so thats good, this thing is ridiculous 30-70. I just want to be able to pull 100mph consistently.

I think the answer has to be more weight, but how much and in which hole?

Banging only on take off is more of a track issue, but you can help it with clutching. Problem is unwinding the secondary to get traction takes away the mid range "wow". So my advice would be to remove the 2.44 from the center and put it in the heel. Do not go less shims as that takes away from the "wow" factor.

I tried the removal of two shims, didn't take away much punch, just a little less midrange track spin. No where near the different I felt going to 3-3 on the secondary. (I'm unstudded). Kept me off the limiter on take off except when getting air crossing road one time in 50 mile ride. But, still too much rpm up top. Ran it up to 88 on the gps and tach recall is saying 9340. I was at 9100 at 81mph when I looked down. So Stingray, you think just moving the weight will bring me down enough? I was thinking of adding an additional 2.44 in the heel and trying that out.

Was that 8340 you mean instead of 9340? Because mine hits the rev limiter at 9240 - 9250. But if you are hitting the rev limiter on top yes more weight, are you hitting the rev limiter at top speed?

Yup, 9340. I cleared the tach and took off slow to be sure that was an accurate top end rpm reading. I didn't hear or feel it knocking the limiter, but I was running out of room and had to get on the brakes.

Going to post this because I am truly flabbergassed by aquaticlaker's sled and the power it is making stock with the COTC setup. I am poting this because this is the first sled I have worked on that is taking way more weight than I have ever put in a COTC setup for anyone!

I have him loaded with 4.5 in the tip and 3.0 in the middle with the 8FP's and he is still hitting the rev limiter hard. Now it's time to take it to the limit and really throw some weight at it!

I pm'ed Mike and told him to find some lead rivets or regular rivets (6-7 gram) or M6 x 1 screws/bolts & nuts....But we have to be careful and not go past the 1/8" maximum height on each side of the weight.

I'll be interested in your results nos-pro, as I'm also getting ready to add a couple more grams. Going to do some long pulls this weekend to validate what I saw in short runs earlier this week.

I will let you know as I did find some M6 x 1 bolts I am going to try.

Remember this Viper loves tip weight :)
