Had a great day of riding yesterday. Mostly blue skies 2 degrees above at the parking lot, warmed up to 15 during the day. Snow was 8 in. powder on top of 8 in. of a firm crust from last weeks rain and waist deep under that with no real base. First off the soft start spring is great, nice smooth take offs with no trenching which was perfect for the snow conditions. Take offs on full throttle on the valley trails where strong and pulled close to the 800's I was riding with ( 13 PRO RMK 155, 14 XM 154 and a 14 XM with a 146 ). On the climbs of the steep valley walls that was peppered with willows I could pull 7900 RPM and make close to 3/4 the way up going straight. I could then side hill and make it all the way on shallower spots. The 800's where climbing all the the way to the top if they could keep the nose down . Think if I could get my RPM's closer to 9000 with the heavier front end My viper 153 would have done real close the 2 smokes. Any sugestions on what to remove and would there be beifits to put weight in the middle? Thanks Fred
At 7900 RPM you were really leaving a lot on the table. Get that RPM up, moving weight to the middle effects like 30mph to 75mph (rough estimate). You didn't post what you are running now?

I too really like the soft touch spring, and I can still dig a small trench with the 162 X3 track so that is one part that stays.

Put secondary at 3-3 will take some mid away and put it on top. I have mine on 3-3 but miss the pull on acceleration from low speeds so putting it back to 6-1 although I think 3-3 is actually faster (but less fun).
You could also lighten the tip weight a little to get to 9150-9200 and that might get you a few more MPH back.
Ok ,was gonna try 3-3 ,think I read that already on here, checked my recall and it said 9146 rpm,so I am gonna stay were I am at for now,the mbrp can will be here on Monday so I will wait to change the weights ,that will change things a little, might have to add some to the middle,if I understand correctly from reading thur this thread, thanks for your input.

I put a MBRP can on stock with only COTC mod and gained around 175 to 200 RPM. Try can and 3-3 first is my suggestion then go 6-1 with weight add if needed.

Sorry boys, I jumped the gun. Just an update-'15 DX stock, 8fp, gwg,3 mm shim, 8dn, helix shimmed. Had 3.6g in tip jtil it was broke then tapping limiter, now 4.5 and STILL tapping limiter. Pulling good. In all fairness our trails here in southern Ontario are hard and fast, so on some of the fields she can't hold the rpms, recalled at 9239. Pullin between 87-93 depending on snow. More weight in the middle hole now? Everything seems good, just can't hold to the bar. Thanks

15 Viper MTX 153 blue/white
I put solder on the tips of the 8FP weights to start with an even 70 grams ( using reloading scale ) added a 4.5 rivit to the tip and got exactly 74.44 grams on each weight. was hitting the limiter when pinning it off in the yard so i left it that way at the mountains. 5 shims in primary secondary stock with spring at 6-2. running the stock viper belt set for track to just spin on its own when picked up by bumper. every thing else is stock.

I would add to the middle, or buy the heavy rivets MPI sells and put those in the tip.

We know that the Viper runs better as it breaks in whether it is the engine, the clutches or whatever. I suspect as we go that the COTC kit will end up with more weight than we have seen yet.

I would hope that the solder was on the underside of the weight and added so centrifugal force cannot jar it loose. Pieces flying around at that rpm can be VERY dangerous.

I am in the same boat, also located in Southern Ontario. 8fp weights with 4.5 in the tip, gwg, 4mm shim, 8dn, 46/40 helix shimmed wrapped 6-1. Top speeds vary between 88 - 92mph. Hitting the rev limiter when WOT, recalled at 9248 rpm. Do you have any mods to your viper? I am running the excel exhaust and intake. Sled has 2500km on it and seems to always be getting stronger.

Nope, motor is bone stock, just COTC with 144 studs. Have about 1200 miles on now but north from subury for 3 days next weekend, would really like it sorted by then I might have to put stock back in.

I would be scared the solder comes off too. We use to weld a bead on the back side of the weight to make them more heavy. You are better off using mig welder to do that.

Mig is a good idea. Do you think the solder just wont stick well enough or the meting point. looked into it and melting point is around 800F. thanks for the help
