End of Year TY Ride

I heard that there was no drinking allowed on TY trips. Is this true? NO drinking when driving your sleds with the group. Other then that its up to you what you want to do as an individual.

Does TY really have any liability for individuals actions during a group ride? I dont want to think so but I dont want someone to think its my fault that a rider is being an idiot either driving unsafe or by driving drunk and hurts another rider. It takes only one incident to take it to the next level and dump the reliability onto Totallyamaha.

What about breaking the speed limit or aggressive (sober) driving? Who is enforcing the rules and what are the consequences for someone breaking them? Well if I see it I will say something and if your going to drive like an idiot and are going to compromise someone elses well being...STAY HOME.

Come on now!!! If you cant come on one of these rides being responsible for your actions and safe then may you should just stay home and not go on a TY ride.

Thanks for the explanation Tom. I am quite certain that TY would have no liability whatsoever for what an individual does any more so than if I were to organize a ride and served as the group leader. However I fully understand that this is your site and you make the rules and this is how it should be.

That being said, I do take exception to anyone inferring that no one can have a beer or two during a ride and still be responsible. However I also understand that there are some people that can not be responsible with alcohol and therefore it is easier for you to police a zero tolerance policy than to try to monitor the sobriety of everyone in the group.

Thanks again Tom for the great site! I really would like to meet some of the other members so I will probably go on a group ride in the future. Before everyone jumps on me (again) about not being able to have fun without alcohol, that is not true and I am sure that I would have a great time on a TY trip while following Tom's rules. Unfortunately I can not make it on this trip but perhaps next year!

Just so it's clear, those of the group that like to have drinks, consume plenty of them at the Hotel after the sleds are put to sleep. It's not a dry week-end, just dry while riding with a TY group.

As it should be.

The law here is drinking and driving ANYTHING is a no no. You can even be charge with a DUI while driving a bicycle. :drink:

Our TY ride was AWESOME. We all had a great time with no alcohol consumed during the ride. Fantastic people driving great sleds and all part of the best snowbile forum .
The hot tub time and wobblely pops made for even more smiles in the evening while all the sleds were asleep.
All in all a great TY ride with and without alcohol.

In many cases....."Consume Plenty" is an understatement !! Oooohh my head :o|

As far as liability.....unfortunetly too often it comes down to who has the best lawyer #$%&*

If I were in the area, I would love to do a TY ride. While I have no problem with anyone consuming a few beers, I really think beer has no place while operating any vehicle.

Whether you think you can be responsible or not, I would rather not surround myself with that crowd. I look at it this way, if I had a beer or two on the trail, then some dope was stopped in a stupid spot on the trail, I hit and kill him (despite the fact he was a dope and parked in a stupid spot) I would rather not look back on the situation and question the 2 beers I had, nor would I want to explain that to his wife and kids. Never mind those lawyer guys........... Save it for the hotel and help keep everyone a little safer, even the dopes! Just my 2 cents.

Thanks TY for having some standards!

Well said ! ;)!

Once you attend one, you'll see very quickly that it becomes a non-issue. There simply isn't as many places to stop during the day and more room to ride, but as soon as the sleds are put away at the end of the day, the hotel bar is within crawling distance to your room!

Also to add to Mr Sled's post, and correct me if I'm wrong boss, but anyone caught drinking while on a TY ride will be left behind and not allowed to travel with the group, and possibly asked not to return?

It's also been said many times that if there is any accidents with injury there won't be any more TY rides, and we've been doing fine so far, so just be smart and ride within your capabilities, leave your ego's at the door, be smart about it and have a blast!

Dont feel like it's something that's saddled with a bunch of rules either, but since the topic was brought up, it's a good time for those who haven't been on a TY ride to know what's expected. Simple comon courtesy mainly..
It's not like anybody is there barking orders either. The rides have gotten so big over the last few years that if we all tried to ride together, we'd be in a 5 mile line! We all usually break into smaller groups and go where we want during the day, and meet back at dusk.

Definitely sounds like a blast to me. I will try to make it on a TY ride next year. The no drinking while riding rule is really not an issue for me. The guys that I usually ride with all like to have a few during the day as I do, but I certainly can have fun riding without the alcohol as well. I was just asking so that I knew what to expect since I have never been on a TY ride.

Even though most of us will more than make up for it after hours, I've never seen anybody drinking during the day who didn't stay at the hotel all day, and frankly I don't think you'd even notice it with all the riding! If you've never been to the UP, it's a bit different than MN and WI, as you can ride all day out on the trails and hardly cross a road, see a house, or anything depending on where you go. I used to ride the Mercer/Hurley area in WI alot, but after going to Munising, I've never been back.
