03 Rx stock engine.......

OK so I dont check my oil, I wait for the light!! But it doesnt work!!!

Pulling a big hill running 50-60mph,, speedo at 70+ (spin) Starts to tap, tap....stop check oil.. tank empty!!

Put 2 qts. to bring up to normal.,, start up sounds ok.. ride a little --1/2 mile pulling it still has a small sound. If I didnt know the machine I wouldnt notice it but it is there for sure... To be safe I shut down and let a Switchback pull me out.

Started to put on/off trailer.. No noise i can detect then or now at idle.

So here is my ????

1.When run for a prolonged period slowly loosing oil will the top end starve first??

2. How can I check this out? Do I have to tear all the way down?

If Im gettting a little lifter tap will it last for a while?

What would you do? I dont have lots of $$

:o|

If you don't have a lot of money the last thing you need is to scatter that engine. If it was mine and I knew that it was run low enough on oil to cause things to start tapping I wouldn't hesitate to tear it down. It's a lot cheaper to fix it before it gets broken real bad.

Much, much cheaper and easier to check the oil..I check it before every ride...It take 2 mins

This is what I thought too, but didnt want to hear.... :o|

I got a suggestion to check oil for metal/ flush/change oil/ run check for any noises, then check oil for metal contamination.

Any opinions on this..?

Thanks for the response!!!

update

Ive got the valve cover off and the cam lobes look new.

When i drained my oil I ran a magnet through it and found NO metalic particles at all. I drained the tank first, and did the magnet on that, then the pan, and then the filter. I didnt pick up one little bit of magnetic particle. But I drained it into a clean white bucket, and then slowly put it into my bulk tank. When I got to the bottom of the bucket I let the last 1/2 oz or so drip onto a clean papertowel. There are very small particles in the oil that look metalic but are not magnetic. But Im not so sure we wouldnt find that anyway??

So I am now going to check my valve clearances. I intend to put in clean oil and start it up and let it warm up at idle for a while. If its real quiet I will try reving it up to engagement and see....
I did run it to put it up on the trailer and take it off into the garage and it was NOT knocking. I did let it idle a min or 2 and reved it some and could not detect any tic at all.

I only rode it about 1/2 mile after addding the oil back in and it was not knocking/ticking like it did be fore I shut it down. But I could detect a slight ticking and did not want to chance it. If I didnt know my machine I dont think I would have even noticed it. Im hoping maybe the oil hadnt had a chance to get completely back in all the righ places? I dont know.

I am sort of hopeful as I didnt find any magnetic particle.??

Clean the dip stick by blowing compressed air thru the small holes in it. I have seen dip sticks getting clogged by contaminates from the oil.

When I ran my engine for over 6 mins with no oil pressure (in short intervals) the cams looked great until I took the cam caps off, they were scored bad. Also the oil was clean. Point being you can try it but if a bearing is scored it will throw a rod right out the block then you are hosed. Its up to you but I would tear it all apart.

Someone else told me the same thing, and I agree too.

I just would think there would be some magnetic particles in there???

Promod63--- I did start to try and take the filter apart but had a tough time with it. I didnt want to "cut' as to add metal particles. But the debris would be inside anyway not between the paper and the can.. I think...

Running her on my ice covered road easy there is no sound, but if I make it pull it does rap. Not a very hard pull either..im going 15-20mph then pull just a little... I dont know if id call it a knock.. but its definately not a "tick"...

Thanks guys.

Time to pull it!

Who should I send it to??????????

grrrrrrrr :o|

Pull it, don't waste your time checking anything else and hoping for a miracle. The damage to the bottom end is already done.
The audible noise you can hear is the con rod bearings tapping, your bearings are already wounded. It only takes a split second when the oil pressure goes away to allow the rod bearing to contact the crank journal and the friction galls the bearing away (makes more clearance). Sounds like your engine was loaded pretty good at the time you discovered your "lack of oil" situation. Now with more clearance (which you can hear now), your oil pressure is lower because of the reduced restriction. The galled bearings rub on the crank more, friction causes heat, heat burns away the oil from the bearing even more. It snowballs until it spins the bearing or throws the rod.
Take it apart now, you might save the crank...

Kinger,

Were you able to get the cam caps? My Yamaha dealer told me that they are not for individual sale. They told me I had to buy the whole head. If so, do you know the parts #'s?

Thanks

Thats correct everything is sold as one peice. You can shave the caps down and then line bore everything but that it money and i would rather have a new/used head. Sorry my friend good luck!

Thanks for the info....Back to this guys problem.

Are you sure you just don't have a exhaust leak? Ticking sounds a lot more like an exhaust leak than a bad motor. A ticking at idle seems much more likely an exhaust leak. Does it get quieter when it warms up?

If it ran for a few seconds without oil pressure, it might not do any damage especially if the engine wasn't under heavy load...in my opinion.
