Dec. 1st and I assume trails are open on time. Last night we got approximately 6 inches on top of what we all ready had. I can't speak for the complete tip of the mitt but Gaylord over to Larry's bar (Elmira area) should be fair from what I've witnessed. I will post more when I know if the trails are open all the way up to the Mackinaw Bridge and what its like going over to Lewiston and down toward Frederic. Things look pretty decent for the 1st of December with snow currently still falling and snow in the forecast for 9 of the next 10 days.

Thanks for the update Superman! Got my reservations at the Royal Crest Motel for Wed and Thurs night booked today. Hopefully the groomers will be out in full force by then. I look forward to a great opener!
;)!

Went out today. Gaylord to Wolverine and then over to Larry's. on and off trail riding today....... Lots of snow. Trails around Gaylord were O.K. I would have expected things to be flat as a pancake but they weren't. I understand the DNR is actually doing the grooming in Gaylord this year. So far I'm not impressed. Up toward Wolvering the trails are done by the Indian River Snowmobile club and their trails were simply beautiful. The trail to Larry's and the chandler hills system was also great. I can't stress enough how much snow we have out there right now. Sorry I didn't take any pics on the trail but my sled was just plastered with snow when I got back to the garage.

What a beautiful sight...

I am very concerned with the grooming in Gaylord this year as well. Gaylord is typically my #1 location, may have to find a new one this year... I think I will either go to Grayling, Indian River. or East Jordan. The sad thing is that it wont take long for the word to spread through the snowmobile community and the lack of grooming is going to have a significant effect on Gaylord area businesses.

Superman - your Wolverine to Larry's run - did you have to detour around the downed bridge, or have they fixed it?

Agree on the snow elswhere. Riding at night on the unbroken areas tough with snow covering your headlights frequently!

Thanks, -Al

We ran the trail to where you come out on Walton rd.. From there we dropped down to Chandler hill rd. and picked up the pipeline south toward camp 10 rd.. The pipeline was basically over the hood powder the whole way. I know the section of trail that your talking about and I do not have an answer for you. I will try to contact a couple of buddy's and find out later today.

-Chris

O.K.. Talking to the DNR office they say that the bridge issue in question has been resolved. Apparently they have a groomed detour around that bridge. Here is a phone # for everyone to keep in the roladex. Gaylord office for the DNR is 732-3541 and ask for Robin Pearson. In the past she has been very helpful when I've had questions or complaints.

Thanks Chris, appreciate the legwork. I was curious as the detour/route was not marked at all last season, was going into the area from the opposite direction that I would normally run, wasn't sure I remembered the route. If they are in fact grooming it, should be a no brainer. Thanks again, -Al

Re: Gaylord area grooming.
Gaylord club disolved and/or abandoned grooming last season. DNR then put it out for bid to independent contractors (similar to Munising area). That idea was abandoned. Then DNR asked surrounding area clubs to take over....without providing new equipment. (they wanted the other clubs to take the broken/worn out equipment that was previously used in the area....how it got whupped out is another long story.)
Anyways, surrounding clubs said "no way...unless new equipment". DNR said no and then decided to do the grooming themselves.
As you know, the DNR handles everything else so well (please detect sarcasm here!!) So, you can probably anticipate what the trails around Gaylord will look like this year.

I'm only going to say that I'm surprised local businesses don't expect, no, demand more from the "Tourism Council" or hold them accountable for the current state of affairs.

Superman - yep. Just finished putting new heat exchangers on both sides and refilled/bled her Monday. Didn't have a chance to work on it much before that......busy getting trail stuff set up. But yeah, I'm ready to get out on it this weekend. Re: indian river - all the local councils were willing to pitch in and take over sections, but the equipment thing was a huge issue.

Ahicks - it's all about the DNR. They don't believe they're accountable to anyone, nor are they in this (snowmobiling) to benefit anyone besides themselves.

Gaylord in one word for weekend of 1-12/1-14 HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blue bear, jordon valley, lovells and grayling were pretty good with plenty of snow but the rain is only about 1 hour away. Supposed to get cold at the begining of the week so it shouldn't ruin the up coming weekend. Who can we cry to about the gaylord area? WOW! Im getting a GPS for christmas so I will make my own trails then in the gaylord area. :o|
