Let's talk primary clutch rollers

My stock primary rollers were hammered out quickly after installing the Hurricane Jukebox. I was way off initially on clutching(TP Orange and reverse angle helix) like many of us were early on which sure didnt help the rollers.

I installed the TP rollers, tad larger OD(14.8mm) due to thicker bushings....ran them all winter and look ok still. Will see how long they hold up.

Seems we need to find a decent primary clutch altogether. the TEAM can be the most cost effective primary to go to as its far less then a TAPP or others. Also allows for wide belts. Just not certain they hold up over time/miles? I think they are doing better then ours though.

So what do you run now if not the Tp orange

I am going to try some bronze bushings this year.

Can't remember for sure but isn't this is the same clutch the Yamaha designed for the Vmax and SRX of the 90s. Only 140-145 hp at best and now we are putting 280-300 hp through them. Time for a different clutch for sure.

The Sidewinder clutch is ( IMO), a huge pile of garbage. They took webbing away, have different size sheaves and changed the weight bolt location. I want to know what kind of drug Yamaha is on to bring out a clutch like that.

Like titanrcr said, now we are throwing 280-300 hpr to these.

Yamaha needs a four or six arm clutch to get the roller bushing abuse under control.

Turbo Viper guys all over the world running over 270 horse and no roller problems with their 3 arm previous style clutches. Only the SW clutches.

Sidewinder has a lighter crankshaft than the Viper. The lighter 998 crank hammers the heck out the clutch with harmonics worse than the Viper. Its another reason Hurricane did up his stub shaft with a heavier flywheel type mass on it. Helps with flywheel effect and quiets the clutch rattle.

The 998 hammers the daylights out of even the STM clutch and tears it up, so I'm told from the guys putting miles on them. Same thing we found on the 1200 Doos.

Aren't the Team primary's exploding on the Cats??? At least that's what I've been reading... I'll take the worn rollers.

The ones that have switched back to the previous clutch (Viper, Nytro, Apex) aren't having problems, ......know a few that have switched back or bought new Viper clutch replacements last winter and running big tunes with no issues.

If the engine has that much harmonics, wouldn't the knock detection be going off all the time?

I never had a problem with the primary rollers on 2 of my boosted Vipers. Both had high miles.

Not sure why, just didn't have a problem!

It does throw det protection with the STM clutch quite a bit and rattles like a SOB. STM needs rebuilding before a couple thousand miles is up I'm told.

How many miles are people going without bushing failures on the old clutch?

The first year Team that was on the Cat was recalled had supposed problems. I've heard only one actually blew apart. They were all recalled and replaced early on.

I went through 3 sets on my tuned 2017 sidewinder with 5000 miles

My tuned viper had 4000 miles with no issues

Good chance Daves stub shaft could cure these problems. Harmonic vibration can be very destructive to a primary and other parts as well.

No , their holding up around here anyways. A much beefier primary than the Yamaha and quiet.,
