looking to buy a nytro, but have questions

Hey all, I am entertaining the idea of buying a Nytro mtx for myself this spring. I am coming off a 2009 skidoo summit 146 with the 600 e-tec. I really like that sled, but I am interested in trying something different. I think my biggest concerns about the nytro are the weight and fuel mpg's. I ride in michigan and wyoming. When in Michigan fuel is not as much a concern, but in the snowies where we ride its a bit of a poke to go get fuel. Another reason I am looking at the nytro is because I want a turbo sled eventually. I have never ridden a Nytro, but i know a guy who has an 09 with under a 1,000 miles that I can buy for a great price, I am thinking i can get it for a little under 6,000. I like to carve and sidehill as well as do as much climbing as I can. I have seen quite a few stock nytros do some pretty good climbs and have been impressed with them over all. I am not brand loyal, but have owned ski doo since 2005, mostly because they fit the type of riding I like to do. But since getting bit by the out west riding bug my riding style has changed a bit. Is the 09 a good year to start with? I am not 100% sure i am going the way of the Nytro yet, just looking for advice from guys who own them.

I am sure you will be happy with a Nytro. You would need a couple of rides to get used to it, but once you're used to it you will be very happy with it.

There is also a lot of things available to make them even better, wich you will find out after riding some miles..

The top things would be new skis and maybe a new track..

Thanks Dimebag, I should add that I am 6'4" and fairly strong. But I also have areal good sense of balance. My riding buddies are more like a "bull in a china shop" and i am more of a finesse rider. They just point and shoot up a hill, where I pick a slightly more difficult line to follow. What kind of fuel economy do you typically see? do you carry extra fuel. I am thinking I would look at a tunnel dump exhaust to be able to put a rack on the back to carry fuel and a bag for overnight trips that we do in the U.P. of Michigan.

I am using a Mountain Addiction trackrack with 2x 1.3 gallon fuel caddies for the longest rides. Usually i don't have to use them, but it's great to have them there in case you run into some good powder

You would need to get a exhaust turnout to use these caddies, but then your'e good to go.

I actually don't know how the fuel economy is, have never got it measured.. I ride way to un-economically to measure things like that

08/09 MTX Nytros are pretty much the same sled. In 2010 the MTX received a bunch of upgrades, new tunnel, new lighter rear skid, new front suspension, floats all the way around, different track.
Some guys prefer to save some coin on the sled purchase and get a 08 or 09, then do all the upgrades with aftermarket parts. Others prefer just to get the 10/11 and leave it more stock, since most of the upgades on the 10/11 match what guys were doing through the aftermarket!
Similiar results, just two different ways of going about it.
You can't go wrong either way!

If your buddy's sled is in great shape, it's not a bad way to go. Since you can do the mods in stages, and pick and chose your top priorities. (almost everyone starts with a different track)

Great, thanks for the replies. My son has an 08 phazer that I think is a blast to ride, just needs more power for my size. I have been thinking about going that route too and just doing a turbo right out of the gate. But i have not heard how the phazer holds up in the long run with a turbo. I guess I have a lot of thinking to do. I am not riding this year because I am having rotator cuff surgery on Dec. 21st.I am hoping to have my sled choice ironed out by april in case the Dr. says i can go ride.

Thats EXACTLY the type of video i was looking for. I love to do that type of riding. We sometimes go into some real tight stuff, but not too often. How does your Nytro do compared to the two strokes you ride with? Obviously the Nytro is heavier but you seem to handle it very well. Do you carry extra fuel? I am used to my 600 e-tec summit, where I can go a lot farther than my riding buddies and never worry about fuel. I just want to try something different, and the Nytro is VERY appealing to me.

On most rides fuel range for me has been about the same as most of the 2 strokes (M8, M6, Pol D8's) I ride with and better then the Rev summits. The Nytro has a smaller tank, but gets better mileage so we are all looking for fuel around the same time, which works out ok. Especially since I hate packing fuel! I will though if I know that it's going to be a long day.
Of course how you ride, and snow conditions effect fuel mileage most of all.

you dont notice the weight,, the motor is set so low in the chasis that the sled is realy easy to lean over.. its easier to lean over then the xp, most of my buddies who try my nytro end up dumping it on its side because they dont realise how easy it leans over,, i can sit down and carve around with ease.. the 800s will do better in the really deep but not by much... i was riding with a buddy of mine who was riding a doo 800 fuckin around on some steep technical pulls and the nytro spanked it,, he was amased at how well the low end torqued help the nytro in these situations

unless im planning to go home early i always pack spare gas.. the tank is smaller then most so when i bring spare gas im really only using as much as there full tank would be... it does really good on the trail, but up here in northern bc we tend to get really deep snowfalls so i burn alot of gas, but so does everbody i ride with... i dont think ive ever gotten over 100 kms on a tank, our trails are very short and your above the treeline bustin pow within 20 km of the truck

Thanks mtnviper, I always ask about fuel economy because i dont want to be that guy who runs out. Thats why I bought a 600 e-tec summit when it came out. That thing was ridiculously good on gas, everyone i rode with out west last year used my spare gas, except me. I would probably just put a rack on to carry fuel anyhow. But its good to know these things. I may go out to Centennial Wyo. this spring and rent a sled from Kody to see how I like it. Here's hoping the snow holds up well.

Thanks, from what I have seen while riding out in the snowies, the nytro is damn impressive all around. I just can't seem to get my head around the extra weight of the thumper engine. I know in the long run it will be an awesome motor and sled combo, but all my buddies think its a tank.... because they are blinded by the rev xp's they ride. I am having rotator cuff surgery on Dec. 21 and hope to get a ride in out in the snowies in late April, hopefully I can rent a nice nytro out there to try.
