Making chips, machining the primary & secondary myself

Well, they are machined. Hopefully try them tomorrow night.
 

Unless he is reverse engineering something a vendor has done, or is doing, I don't see anything wrong with his posting this. The vendors aren't the only ones with mechanical abilities around here, been machining my own clutches to get more top end for years... The vast majority of people don't have access to the machines required to accomplish this so they would have to use a vendor anyway.

Post away... its your user account and reputation. Some people will take a Vendors hard work or maybe your hard work and replicate it, sell it or even give it away... I was just saying... be careful whose toes you may or may not step on. This is a small industry we live and play in and someday you may need them.

That's why I stated "Unless he is reverse engineering something a vendor has done". Reverse engineering is taking someone elses product/idea and working backward to figure out how it was done, pretty much a brainless job. I do not agree with going about anything that way but there is nothing wrong with coming up with your own ideas and following thru if you have the ability. Doing something like this to your own clutches takes machines that very few have sitting in their garages.

Also- How is this thread any different from the "Clutching on the Cheap" thread? The info in there could easily prevent a ton of clutch kits from being purchased from the vendors just by providing a list of parts to buy online, which pretty much anyone can do.

I have spent plenty of $$ with the vendors on this site to show my appreciation for there support of your site.

I know Terry "NOSPro" on a different level then you, this was for him not for you to put your 2 cents on... I let you say your peace now step back and take a deep breath.
 
I think given the fact that he is prolly the only person in the US or Canada that's running their viper in actual competitive asphalt racing, a guy like terry needs to do these things because realistically there isn't really any vendor that can help him, aside from a big time company that would take the sled and build it for him which I'm sure that isn't going to happen.

Ok??? Didn't think I was arguing, just questioning. It was very obvious you were just giving him a bad time and did not want him posting any numbers, I was just pointing out that this is something very few can even begin try to do themselves. If anything, this thread will probably make Ulmers shop fill up with clutches to upgrade. I think NOSPro will get good results.

I believe the clutching is holding everyone back.

After so much thought, I don't expect the machining to affect anything but top end. Believe me, I have put so much effort into figuring these clutches out it makes my head hurt. I am not machining the angles, I'm just machining more room for movement and to fix our little 8DN issue and secondary spring coil bind.

I agree that this Yamaha clutch problem should be out in the open. These clutches have had spring bind problems for years and nothing has been done about it.
I am also a machinist, have owned a machine shop, and did my own machining on my clutches to eliminate the problem. It is a pretty simple problem to figure out. I also agree that the machining will basically only affect top end. The other problem with spring bind is that it will reduce the life of the spring.

As far as the original post I agree with everybody here!!! machining the primary and secondary is not proprietary and has been around since the Yamaha's have made enough HP to achieve full shift out. Every Vendor that I know has their own tolerances they work to, each is a bit different in approach. Especially on the primary. Some machine only one side others take less out of both sides to maintain balance and alignment.

I own a lathe and mill and have been machining since the 80's but I deferred to Ulmer on the Viper because it was cheaper than if I screwed up and had to replace sheaves or worse yet the belt shield, hood and belly pan if it exploded. I had that happen on a 98 SX 700 and was sick when I saw what half of a primary spinning at 8000 rpms can do to the sled.
