Marginal Snow Kit

I mounted a set this summer.
Because of the curvature of the rail at the front of the skid, the mounting block will not fit in this area. Slide the mounting block along the lip on the rail, the minute is slides into place - that is your spot.

Obviously you can slide the block towards the back of the rail but it will slide into the lip just ahead of the existing idler - which is pointless to mount it there.


After reading on this site, that front bearing takes alot of abuse - it is under a fair bit of pressure from the track and the wheel circumference promotes much higher rpms. I plan on checking the bearing regularly to avoid what others have written here and having the wheel grind itself off and end up in the bush somewhere.

Hope that helps. Be sure to loctite them in.

I have the marginal snow wheel kit on my '07 Apex. It is designed to be installed at the front curve in the slide rails where you are wearing out your slides. I installed these wheels when my sled was a year old and I was replacing my worn out slides for the first time. They did completely eliminate slider wear in this area.

I have attached pictures of the front and rear view of the installation. Yes, you need to drill holes in your slide rail to install them.

Some words of caution: Use red Loctite on the bolts. I used blue Loctite initially and I lost a wheel when the bolt backed out. After re-installing the bolts with red Loctite I have not lost a wheel since. Check the replaceable bearings every season. These small wheels spin at a much higher RPM than the larger wheels and consequently the bearings will fail sooner. I usually end up replacing the bearing on at least one of them every season.

The Dupont slides probably will negate the need for these wheels. I am just getting ready to install my first set of Dupont slides and I will be leaving the wheels on since they are already mounted. You can see in the last picture that the Dupont inserts start right about where the wheel is mounted. You may want to try the Dupont slides by themselves first and perhaps save some time & money by not having to install and maintain the extra wheels.

I have the duponts on my Nytro and ran them for 3500km last season, and althought they are significantly better than stock hyfax, they will wear in low snow conditions.
I am hoping that by installing the marginal wheel kit at the front of the skid i can pretty much take the pressure off the sliders at the front of the rail. That is where the most wear occured on my sled, and seriously extend the life of the sliders.

If your sled has torsion springs and you install the marginal snow wheels near the bend, make sure that the end of the torsion spring doesn't strike the aluminum block holding the wheels when the suspension cycles downward.

I purchased the pioneer performance small wheel kit. The instructions has them mounting 3/4" behind the rubber stop. I see yours mounted right up against the stop. is that a better mounting location? I was gonna tack weld mine on the eliminate them coming undone as has happened to others.
 
If it's a shortie it mounts up by the rubber at the bend in the rail like the pics. Longtrack at the middle of the rail. I have a set on my 128 and they worked great. I replaced the bearings in them for this year, this is a must IMO, to changs the bearings yearly. Mine were sgot after 1 year and 4k miles. Dupont slides are good for another year though.

I have a 136" track(attak) pioneer performance instructions says mount 3/4" back from rubber stop. But as in the first pic they are right against the stop? No where in instructions does it says mount the towards the middle or back of rail?
