Round two on the muffler. Original one was replaced at 8,xxx miles with warranty.

I had this one welded and used high temp silicone paint to seal the weld.

Another design flaw.

At least this was a quick cheap fix.

Had the same thing happen to me around 7k miles. The dealer had told me the suspension had cause this by touching the exhaust pipe. They would not pass it under warranty because I had studs. Lucky enough I had purchase a full spare exhaust for cheap couple months before this happening.

Typical response from your dealer... I have zero studs and it happened twice so I doubt it.

The more I look at the pipe it seems like it is a welding problem along with the muffler not being allowed to flex enough.

I told you all to switch back to stainless pipes, but most of you put the titaniums on again. I don't remember hearing about RX1's having this problem.

apex yooper, my muffler, not my y pipes is what broke.

The muffler is not titanium.

In '08 they added a extra support, my buddies '05 had this problem to the point of the centre part of the exhaust SAGGED so bad he had to replace both headers 'cause they KINKED and rear exhaust flanges cracked.

Here's a pic of my '08 with centre support, makes a lot of sense.

sorry kuni,

I'm so used to reading about broken pipes, and never heard of a muffler breaking, I didn't read it correctly. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, nice pics.,my muffler cracked around 4500 mi.,144studs, fixed under warranty. but next one will likely be on my dime (will be off warranty) and this is very helpful info.
with all due respect, i don't consider it a design flaw in my case. i ride hard, things break. from experience, any other brand would have worse/other problems. yamaha warranties have been great to me over the years. very happy with my dealer.

The paint I used did not last at all. Does anyone have any advice as to something I can use to protect the weld so it does not rust?

Try using BBQ or automotive exhaust HEADER paint which is hight heat...

That is what I used the first time. It just rubs right off with all the snow and ice that gets up there. The stuff I used was rated up to 1,500 degrees.

I wouldn't worry about it rusting whenever it comes time to summerize it just spray a good quality RUST inhibitor on that area to protect it... ;)!

Sauder it over with bronze..., get a welding shop to do it.

Also, the exhaust design sucks in almost every way shape and form. The only thing I even like about it is that it is rear exit which keeps away sound, smell and doesnt bog you down in powder.

To make it even work for you and keep from destroying itself, unfortunately you have to modify it. Here is my stainless plate to support the exhaust and protect it from further damage. The support gets rid of the sag.

Yamahammer485, whats up with the RTV silicone around the front part of the header exiting the front bulkhead, who's headers are those?

For the sagging part YAM took care of that on '08 with the extra support at the headers & exhaust junction look at my earlier pic.
