Muffler Decibel Test take-two - Stock, TD SuperQuiet, SanDale Hyperflow

Beast my friend, i'm buying you a thesaurus for x-mas. BTW: what muffler are you using? Maybe i'll get to hear it this year

Thanks for the review Beerman !
I will say, Even though the SQ did good in your DB test, it would have done even better if it was brand new like the Sandale, and not have a season of riding on it.
All packed mufflers settle get louder with more miles.
It's nice to see the SQ performed well after a season of riding

A smaller body 3" muffler will definately be louder especially at half throttle or WOT.
We reserve 3" stuff for lake racers. This is why we decided on the 2.5" size as this gives a huge boost in performance without too much drone.

Our 2.5" TurboForce has a single bend and most likely has similar flow to a multi bend 3" pipe, that would be an interesting test to dyno the two.

Just from the SuperQuiet which is a multi bend 2.5" straight through muffler to our single bend TF 2.5" there is 7HP difference between the two at 270HP level

From our TurboForce 2.5 to our Race pipe single bend 3" there is only 4 HP on the dyno.

Thanks Ben! I've been very happy with the SQ and with all the debate on what's quiet and what's too loud, seeing it so close to stock dB levels (at least in these 2 tests) confirmed what I thought/perceived last year - I couldn't tell a difference between the SQ and my (very) limited time with the stocker in noise (difference in quality and power potential is a totally different story). I'll recommend the SQ without hesitation to anyone who asks. I haven't heard the TurboForce in person but I think you're using a similar core to OSP and I did hear that at idle and it was definitely louder, but didn't seem too loud (my opinion).

Dave will be sending me his Hindle exhaust to test and I'm thinking I will enlist some help to work the app/dB meter (so my average readings are correct) while I'm on the sled's throttle and re-test all of them in the same day, but also test at 5000 rpm and maybe full throttle for a second. I'll likely take the belt off to avoid all the track noise. So having said that - do you think it's ok to pin the throttle for 1-2 secs with no belt with the PowerTrail/CAI tune you just sent me?

Thanks, Art

Hi Mike, I had a statement at the end on my last note acknowledging load will make a big difference in sound and deleted it at the last moment. I knew someone with experience/knowledge was going to jump on this but W/O a track or clutch dyno I have no good way to do this - and free revving will have to be good enough. Maybe if I had access to a grass test track I could rip by the camera and meter, but then you have all the noise of the engine and sled drivetrain too. I watched Excel's video of a few different tests like that and they all sounded about the same on Youtube. I figure the DNR tests aren't under load, so at least this will be representative of what could happen at a check point.

With Dave sending me his muffler and several follow-up requests for video from other TY members, I'm going to re-do the whole thing and take video of each, even though I "personally" think Internet video isn't helpful, several people are asking for it and given how much I've learned and benefited from TY over the years, I'm going to take the time to do this as complete and the best I can.

I'm no NOS-Pro, but stay tuned for Part 3 - I'll start a whole new thread.

And thanks to all on this post. Good info on muffler noise levels. Always nice to hear about extra hp with just a muffler change out. Reminds me of the old SX and SRX days. Gained quite a bit with muffler/pipe change out. Fast forward to now and holy crap, much can be added with packages that include tunes !!

Only mod to be done is trim rubber gasget some.
Hi Beast - I wish that had been the case for me. My outlet must be 1/8" - 1/4" from yours or the one SanDale used. I ended up not even putting in the stud he supplies as I had to really push to get the first couple holes to line up and with the stud in I couldn't get the correct angle to get them to line up.

If you rode with the 3" last year - what is your opinion of the sound at speed and while cruising? Drone compared to what you had prior?

Thanks

Beerman, next time you do a test like this call me being i live and work 15 minutes from ya..then i will back your reviews

I was unable to ride last year for injuries, but my best friend, who was the mechanic responsible for putting this wreck back togeather for me rode it 700 plus miles, and he thought while riding it,that it had a very impressive sound, not irrating to the ear drums, lol but sporty sounding. But again,he was comparing to a can from his old poo fusion had. I heard it a couple times as he was blasting around his back yard track, with jumps and twists and such,so he was on it,and off it. In my opion, from a by standers standpoint,it is quite loud, now I am sure when we ride, things don't seem quite so loud, but when he was blasting right in front of me 150 feet away, well I thought it was loud enough to russle up a warden if one was in the area.

Looking forward to your second video with some wide open blips. Everyone claims quiet cans and they are similar to stock at idle but at max rpm is where the proof in the pudding will be.

I agree: "proof in the pudding". But since pudding now has a bad rap due to Dr. Huxtable, maybe we should say, "proof is in the eardrums at 7000 rpm's". Not quite as catchy, but more realistic.

BTW: If you don't know who Dr, Huxtable is....your under 40

I believe SNOWBEAST said the 3'' Sandale, while his buddy was driving around, was very loud.

Steve,i did say loud, but not as loud as mufflers I have had in the past,so I said quite loud, imo would be below very loud. Very loud would be the Hauck exhaust I had on my attack, had to have a fuel mapping module to adjust fuel, that was oh my very very LOUD!
