My 09 600 Renegade E-tec blew up today

We have a camp on Onaping lake also(49 miles long ) , we have rode the last 3 weekends in a row ! Awesome riding , lake had 28 in of good ice last saturday April 19 th , bush had 2-4 feet soft snow !
We have had good bush riding , but snow is soft now ! Lake has 1-2 good weeks left , don't park yet ! Levac to Onaping seems like a different world !
Yes , We also saw a pu truck and a farm tractor on the lake , Sunday am !

srxdude,

You hit the nail on the head. The dealership I worked at STOCKED motors!!!! Yes, we had one of each (almost) sitting on the shelf for when it happened. Then we were able to get the customer up and running ASAP and then file the claims........

By the way, they only pay the dealership about half the time!!! I can't tell you how many calls I made as a warranty manager. We also had Arctic Cat, Yamaha, Suzuki, KTM, Honda, Ski Doo. All have their issues, but I would say ski doo was the most difficult and least likely to help.

That is too bad. We had a new E-tec on a trip do something similar but it wasn't the Doo's fault the guy saw it overheating and it kept shutting down and he kept running it till it started smelling like something rotting in the 100 degree sun adn finally it quit for good. It was a nasty smell. Doo put in a new engine for free though.

Nice thing about Doo I noticed is they replace entire engines with new crate ones and dont do the 'only fix what broke' method some companies do where they tear it down and leave who knows how much left over damage that can come back to haunt you down the road.

Our E-tec's never got the magazine advertised 20mpg either usually around 15-18 depending on how much in and out of the throttle they did.

That's funny because my buddies 2009 Etec blew up at 2,000 miles and he told them he wanted a whole new motor and they told him BRP will NOT replace the whole engine, only what was broken. They replaced a jug, pistons, and rings and he was back on the trail.

I was going to go to camp with the sled this weekend on Onaping, but some of us have to work. This weekend it is in a boat south of Sudbury.

I still haven't heard the prognosis on the e-tec from the dealer.

I had a similar problem with a Polaris Indy a few years back. It was running fine then started to seize and quit. I tried to pull start it and noticed it turned over hard so I waited for it to cool then it restarted. I had extra fuel injection oil with me so I dumped it into the gas and ran the thing home with no problems. Later I found that the injection pump quit turning so I split the case and discovered a bad drive gear. Bottom line is that these thing need oil to stay running. As the EPA continues to clamp down on emissions I think you'll see more problems with the 2 stroke engines. From what I understand they monitor the exhaust temp to regulate oil injection. So they are running these things on a fine line to meet regulations. Starving a 2 stoke engine for oil must jeopardize it's longevity.

I've always been a Yamaha guy and their 4 stroke machines keep me one.

Well, I heard from the Ski-doo dealer today. I am not impressed. they are only changing a cylinder and piston only along with some gaskets. The owner told me they were going to drop a new motor in if it was an engine problem. I guess they changed their mind. They said there is no damage to the bottom end.

Well, the sled was so hot the the front part of the cab was "soft" on the verge of melting. My concern is heating up crank and rod bearings and problems that could stem in the future because of excessive heat.

Anyone have any insights on this?

dont know about the 600 but the 800 rotax has sealed end bearings at each end of the crank, filled with grease. these engines use oil like a 60"s chainsaw at 25-30:1 but i guess its not enough for those end bearings. this is why skidont sleds are disposable at 5000 miles, if your lucky. sort of like bic lighters, use it and toss it. this would be ok if they cost 2000-3000 new, but they dont.

Did they split the case and inspect the bottom end? If any metal dropped it can do serious bearing, crank or even case damage. The only way to throughly flush any metal fragments is to split the case and pull the crank. overheating alumininum always seems to cause future gasket sealing issues. I'd push hard for a new engine or at least have them do a better inspection.

Even if they repair the engine have they determined what caused it to overheat? Was it a problem with the oil injection, cooling system or defective parts? good luck!

You can't tell with BRP, The '05 800 renegade I was working on this year (toasted stator side crank bearing) would cost $1300. for the remaned crank, BRP long block $1500., you tell me. Oh yeah three week back-order on the crank, 18 long blocks on the shelf. Bic lighter for sure.

In my experience make em replace the whole thing.
They did the bare min. when my 06 800 blew up....then 500 mile
later and out of warranty....sorry about your luck.....

They only replace the pto piston and jug and replace the other piston

never looked at the crank.....and poof out of warranty and a blown up

sled with 2000 miles that had be been rebuilt twice.

They left me holding the bag....

My personal reasoning here is ....if they cant tell you why the sled blew up....its just like putting a band aid on a ticking time bomb......IMOH

Stand up and either have them tell you why it melted down if they cant

my stand point would be how do you know it won't happen again?

Happened to me and I was majorly pissed and called everyone I could...at BRP and they told me to basicly get bent......its out of warranty

Well I switched to Yamaha and haven't looked back

I would want the whole engine replace......

Crank froze on my doo 800 & doo said out of warranty dude tough break but happy to sell you remanufactured 800 at $2K. The 5k mile life is about right I had 4983 miles. Doo 2s engines are time bombs ....never again & luv my Attack GT. I just can't figure out why people continue to buy 2s doos for trail riding because you will end up walking. 4500 miles on my Attack & still running strong no quirks or burps.

Guys I went through motors on my 04 SDI and 05 PTEK like candy bars. BRP rarely replaced the entire motor, and it cost them more in the long run to only replace parts since it would blow up again within a month of the first repair. They were good to warranty it - I think the dealer plays a large part in that - but the amount of downtime is what pushed me to 4 strokes - even though I have as much downtime with them, it isn't because of backordered parts and repetitive failures in the engine.

I would like to own an E-TEC to give it a whirl, but it won't be this year.

My friend lost his etec at 2k miles and he doesn't ride hard or hold it to the bar for long periods at all. For comparisons sake, his 06 SDI made it 6500 miles before it blew up.
