I could be wrong, but I get the impression that this flash is to clean up starting issues and it seems to even out the idle also. With the last flash, you are definitely at risk of damaging backfires. I have had backfires that were so severe that I will check my muffler for damage! My buddy had his blow open, and limping back to the trailer, he melted oil lines!
There's no good reason to risk this, when a FREE update is offered that takes minutes to perform.
As far as max RPM and driving fuel economy changes go, this is all speculation. It states in the bulletin that it's for starting issues. I can't see any reason to not do it.

had mine backfire inside a clam shell trailer was so loud my ears rang all weekend, inside the aluminum clam shell it was like being inside a drum or echo chamber.I could be wrong, but I get the impression that this flash is to clean up starting issues and it seems to even out the idle also. I saw a video on Facebook where it was supposedly -33. It didn’t start right away, but it did start in a few tries. Let’s be honest, -33 is damn cold! I remember pulling on my SRX almost 30x in -35 before it would start. If it started in -33 where most before the new flash are struggling in -5 to start on first try, I’d say they fixed it!

I think maybe if your cycled the fuel pump a few times it might have gone on first try.mine wouldn't spin over as well as yours did.

Just an update on my new ECM flash. I rode it off and on for 2 days with absolutely no issues. It was -31C on Dec. 31st and it started on the first try after sitting outside all night. It now idles smoothly, starts first try every time. (The guy next door has a Freeride and he had a hard time getting it going) I don't see any difference in the rev limiter. I fully believe this problem is finally fixed and I can now count on it to start and run as it should have 5 years ago.I had my 2014 Viper RTX reflashed this morning with the latest update. This sled has always run flawlessly from the time I got it 2 years ago once it was warmed up. However; when starting cold after the 2016 flash, it would let out a heart stopping backfire occasionally and would be very hard to start below about -15C. After it started from cold, the engine sounded very labored and idle rpm would continuously vary. (engine hot and cold). Most times when starting at operating temp, it would take 2 attempts to get it running.
I have not had it out on the snow since this mornings reflash but have these observations. It cranked several times at -18C (O f) and started without an issue. It idled well cold and rpm's only varied by 10 between 1490 and 1500. I let it warm up on the trailer until the fan ran and then shut it off. The fan now runs quite a bit longer after the engine is shut off than before the latest flash but that's not an issue at all. I started it and shut it off (engine warm) several times at the dealer with single start on the key every time. I then took it home and the engine was cold again when I got there. I went through the start and warmup process again and it performed flawlessly. I then tried restarting it warm several times (warm) and it started first time every time. This would not have been the case before the reflash. One other thing I noticed is when I increase the throttle to just below clutch engagement rpms and then quickly release it, the engine slowly returns to idle speed whereas before it would drop very quickly to idle speed. (not an issue; just an observation)
Overall, I'm very happy with how this turned out and look forward to getting it out on the snow. Hopefully it still performs well. If this problem has actually been solved, I may go and buy a new one someday as I really like these sleds. If this flash turns out to be a dud, I am going to change teams. 5 years is long enough to wait for a solution.

Has anyone had an altimeter jumping around before this new flash and then had the new flash installed? Does the altimeter still jump around? Had mine running is shop today to do a final check over on it. It was idling fine while i was working on the apex and all of a sudden just died. it would crank but woudln't try to fire, i left the key off for a couple min and then tried again and it started but was hunting all over the place at idle from 1350-1950. Put new plugs in and got it running better but still hunts around a descent bit. Was looking at altimeter and it was jumping all over. I hadn't noticed it doing it before but hadn't been watching for it much since hadn't been having issues.

Holy crap, mine has never done this even in cold conditions. I agree, cycle the fuel pump once or twice and I believe it will start quicker.

That's good news. I had mine flashed today. Started first try but I only had an issue in cold temps. Did you have cold start issues prior to the latest flash?
